Young dog is limping :(

Hello,

Dog is just under a year old. Started limping today. Saw vet earlier. Vet can't see anything. But has given pain relief and anti-inflammatory. We have more to give for the next week.

Dog is on bed rest. If still limping on Monday we have to have x-rays.

Does anyone have any ideas or good luck stories? I'm in bits :(

No idea what happened. Dog didn't cry. Came back from walk. All fine, then started limping and can't bear weight.

If we go ahead with x-rays, what will happen? Will they administer an anaesthetic? Will the fur be shaved.... just trying to manage my own expectations.

I've never used the insurance before. Will x-rays be expensive? How do I go about claiming (just like house/car insurance I assume).

Thank you 😔

Did you inspect her paws - sometime a foreign body such as a seed or thorn can get in.

My dog also leggy labcollie cross used to be a bit over exuberant leaping around in the woods and used to limp a bit

She also now understands that brambles aren't great for your paws

Have a look at its pads could be a thorn?

My dog suddenly went lame once, wouldn't weight bare at all, on inspection I find a small slug stuck to the underside of his paw. The poor darling.

My springer also developed a rear leg limp ? Cause, resolved after vet visit, anti inflammatory meds and reduced exercise for a couple of days. No further issues

For us was a cruciate ligament injury that was pretty severe. No crying or obvious distress but the vet said just the dogs nature as very painful injury, long legs and donutting like a puppy weren’t a good mix. It was a big operation and a long slow recovery.

Really hope it’s not this for you @OopsadayZ it was a horrible time and with hindsight I’m not convinced we’d put an older dog through it again.

Oh my goodness,my collie girl just looks the same, very very leggyGrin.kepp her still as much as possible for the first 2 days after injury.by now,the limping should have improved a bit,but in no way healed.you have to keep her on a short lead for a week, then slowly increase exercise. It is most likely nothing serious at all, just a normal sprain.it will happen a few times during her lifespan. Its important to give her the painkiller/ antiinflammatory medication(it heals faster when inflammation is kept away.good luck, she will be running again like a whippet in no timeGrin

Apologies @OopsadayZ I read that as never use insurance, rather than used. Dyslexic so I really should know to read slower.

My parents caused their poor collie loads of joint problems for life with many flares ups due to taking him for long walks for hours as a puppy, hence me mentioning it could happen if that has been the case.

OopsadayZ · 11/12/2021 15:57

Thank you ALL so much. I have read all posts and they’re all really helpful. Dog is LOADS better today. I initially thought fully recovered, but there is still a limp now and again. So I hope it will all be resolved with the pain relief and lots of rest just like you @fitflopqueen

Whoever asked, yes we have a crate - although we only use it overnight. But I might have to pop DDog in to rest. But all is going pretty well as DH, the kids and I are on duty to cuddle DDog on the sofa (such a hardship!)

@FAQs don’t worry at all. Insurance is really important and a reminder, if I hadn’t had any, would have been good. I was just trying to be organised as the vet mentioned the possibility of getting x-rays.

Anyway, thank you one and all. It’s a week of rest for me and DDog and hopefully all will be fine.

Just an idea but nobody in the family has a limp op? Google the lurcher who cost his owner 200 quid for tests and it was limping because the man had a bad leg and was copying him!!

@womaninatightspot

My lab did this. seemed to self resolve in a few days so just a soft tissue injury.
My Lab also did exactly the same thing.
