Tinned fish?

Grandadwasthatyou · 25/11/2021 17:25

Fairly new dog owner here .
He is currently on Arden Grange morning and evening which he enjoys and wolfs down. It has been suggested that he would enjoy tinned mackerel or pilchards mixed in with it. How many times per week should I give him this please?
And any other suggestions for what I could add from time to time to make his food a bit more interesting for him?

What size dog is he?

Our Labrador has a tin of sardines once or twice a week, she also enjoys a raw egg and cooked sweet potato

Sprig1 · 25/11/2021 18:02

Why not just stick with dog food? He clearly enjoys it.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 25/11/2021 18:06

Tinned tuna
Raw egg
Whole raw carrot

My lot love these as a treat maybe once or twice a week

CMOTDibbler · 25/11/2021 18:08

Mine have tinned pilchards once a week. The natural oils do them a lot of good, and they really enjoy it

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 25/11/2021 18:12

Mine have one ton of sardines a week and one tin of tuna a week.

PinkyPromises · 25/11/2021 18:14

Is it a retired greyhound by any chance
. Grin

It's easily digestible supposedly good for their costs and they love it.

PinkyPromises · 25/11/2021 18:14

Good for their coats

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 25/11/2021 18:16

@MrsMcCluskeysCat One ton of sardines?? 🤣🤣🤣

cosmopolitanplease · 25/11/2021 18:30

My dog has a couple of tins of sardines a week, they contain good oils and calcium if you get the kind with bones. His breath don't half stink afterwards though! Envy

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 25/11/2021 18:32

Sardines in spring water too, rather than brine or oil.

SmolCat · 25/11/2021 18:32

I give mine salmon oil as it’s easier to put a glug on his food rather than buy tins of fish. Sprats are easy to give too.

Oops, the house smells enough after 1 tin never mind a tonne! Grin

cherrypiepie · 25/11/2021 18:39

Our dog had one ton a day when he was a pup and needed fattening (rescue boxer)

The oil they are packed in isn't great for them but we didn't wash them just forked them out.

You need to work out, how much your dog weighs and how much Arden grange you give them abs which type (also Arden grange) and how old they are and the breed. You may need to adjust the biscuits. If you post that then maybe me or someone else can advise if you are unsure. Also depends what else dog gets in terms of treats or training treats.

cherrypiepie · 25/11/2021 18:41

One tin!

Grandadwasthatyou · 25/11/2021 21:42

@tizwozliz .. he is a large mixed breed, large retriever size.

Grandadwasthatyou · 25/11/2021 21:52

@cherrypiepie .. he is a rescue so I have had to estimate weight. I would say 30/35 kg. Arden Grange Adult large breed chicken and rice. I give him 400g per day split into 2 feeds, one morning, one evening. One dentistix per day and the occasional pigs/cows ear which I was hoping would keep him occupied a while but he demolishes it in about 10 minutes.

Grandadwasthatyou · 25/11/2021 21:54

Oh and approx 4 years old.

cherrypiepie · 26/11/2021 08:34

@Grandadwasthatyou do you use the Arden grange measuring cup? Our has the same food as yours 400g and we do this as two full cups.

One one day per week I would reduce both feeds slightly ( by quarter cup ish) and add one whole tin (minus the oil) . We added it to the evening feed as is messy.

And keep an eye on weight - DH stands on scales with our dog!! He is a 35kg as well (dog not dh) but not a very practical solution for most people!

He also occasionally has fat free free yoghurt and sweet potatoes and banana as treats. He has a slow feeding bowl which is brilliant to 'hide' treats in.

The baby food organic pouches are good too (cheap from Aldi but not very good for the planet). I don't think they are supposed to have too much banana.

muddyford · 26/11/2021 08:43

I was advised by our vet, after my dog got a tad portly, that Dentastix are almost solid fat. I stopped giving them and he returned to his former svelte self.

Grandadwasthatyou · 26/11/2021 14:30

@cherrypiepie no I don't have the measuring cup. I just weigh it which is a pain. Where do I get the cup from?
Said pooch is fast asleep on the settee after trying to pull the curtains down and stealing some prawn crackers which I thought I had left out of reach on the kitchen bench. How naive am I ?!

One dentistix per day these are absolute junk. I would go for something like PlaqueOff or apparently Greenies are vet approved.

If he gets through a pigs ear too fast for your liking then deer and camel skin is longer lasting (and lower fat) or a buffalo horn will go on forever.

Lightningrain · 26/11/2021 14:41

Make sure you don’t give tinned fish in brine as the salt is really bad for them.

Ours gets a tin of sardines or mackerel and a raw egg per week, odd bits of fruit and veg (usually carrot, broccoli, green beans, melon, berries).

We give natural chews which also help clean his teeth. If there’s a decent independent pet shop near you they usually have loads of choice. Otherwise buy online. Ours likes pizzle sticks, fish skins, pig/cow/rabbit ears, tripe sticks. Some are longer lasting than others.

magicstar1 · 26/11/2021 14:57

Mine gets a tin of sardines once or twice a week. For lunch / snack she gets a cod knot, pigs ear or chew. She loves her fish though.

Mindymomo · 26/11/2021 15:08

I have a border collie who is 3 years old, he gets a tin of sardines in water twice a week. I also add omega 3 salmon oil to food. He also gets mackerel in water, salmon and tiny bit of tuna due to mercury in it.

cherrypiepie · 26/11/2021 15:31

@Grandadwasthatyou we got ours from the Arden grange stand at crufts so that is no help at all!

Some friends got one from a county store that sells feed / pet food but I'm not sure that is Arden grange.

Hope to have been some help. Might want to check feeding quantities on the pack too
