Does your dog have 100% recall?

Puppypuppypuppy · 10/11/2021 13:45

My 14 month old has developed a bit more confidence and selective deafness so is back on a long line for now in situations where I know he's likely to ignore me. But I read on here all the time that dogs should not be off lead in a public place unless they have 100 % recall. This feels a way off for me at the moment. But does any dog really have 100%? (and any tips on how you got there welcome!)

No. Mine have all had 99.99% recall.

JakeyRolling · 10/11/2021 13:50

One of my current two does. But she's the only dog I've ever had that is - most are 99%.

Can call her off a chase (rabbit) with one whistle.

Hortonhearsadoctorwho · 10/11/2021 13:53

One of mine is 100% would trust him anywhere.
One is 70% but still a puppy. Wouldn’t come if distracted by another dog I don’t think.
One was 100% but after a bad experience I no longer trust her off lead at all. Having to start from scratch with her really. I think it’s ongoing training really.

LolaSmiles · 10/11/2021 13:56

No dog has 100% recall but it's possible to get close and be at a point where as a responsible owner you make informed decisions based on the situation.
Mine have excellent recall, but there's some situations I wouldn't let them off lead just in case.

Keladrythesaviour · 10/11/2021 13:57

Yes - so long as nothing better is going on.
She's a sight hound Wink and actually has very good recall when we are on our own, she's very attached to us. If she sees a dog, deer, magpie, rabbit etc then she loses everything.

Keladrythesaviour · 10/11/2021 13:58

I should add we only let her off in very select circumstances as a result.

Allsorts1 · 10/11/2021 13:59

Mine is 100% recall if I’m holding a tennis ball - does that count Grin

I think it depends on the breed - I feel like retrieving breeds have better recall?

JewelleryBox · 10/11/2021 14:00

90% here. I think it’s more about being alert as an owner. If you see a situation where their recall will be tested; put them on the lead.

ImperfectTents · 10/11/2021 14:03

Depends how good the treats are

daisyjgrey · 10/11/2021 14:03

No. About 85%. I only let him off on the beaches around here that he knows and his recall is good on (they're also mainly dog beaches, not kids making sandcastles type beaches). I wouldn't be confident enough to let him off on something like a bike path.

idontlikealdi · 10/11/2021 14:05

Nope. I've got a terrier. If there's a tennis ball involved he's 100%. Off lead without a ball and he smells a squirrel (he's blind), he's about 50%. He'll always come back it's a case of when...

I don't think you could call any dogs 100% unless they're a service dogs and even they can get spooked / frightened.

tabulahrasa · 10/11/2021 14:06

Mine has 100%.... unless there’s a dog, lol.

So he’s on lead (longline, what have you) where it’s likely I’ll meet dogs. Though to be fair, I’ve been training him to recall to a whistle and when I have used it with dogs about he still does recall, I’m just not far enough along to be happy to rely on just the whistle yet though.

Stellaris22 · 10/11/2021 14:07

No, dogs aren’t robots, they’re animals.

With experience I’ve learned when my dog is more likely to ignore me, so I’m able to be vigilant and put mine on lead. But she is allowed off lead most of the time.

poorbuthappy · 10/11/2021 14:07

99% usually.
100% if I'm holding tennis ball and flinger.
Border collie.

dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn · 10/11/2021 14:07

Yes she has 100% recall. Around cows, sheep and other dogs. We've worked bloody hard on her

tabulahrasa · 10/11/2021 14:10

“I don't think you could call any dogs 100% unless they're a service dogs and even they can get spooked / frightened.”

I’d say they have 100% recall if you’d genuinely be really surprised if they didn’t recall.

Brigittebidet · 10/11/2021 14:10

Meh - I'd go with about 25% recall? For that reason she is only ever on-lead unless in an enclosed space with no-one else around. (Retired greyhound, so mostly lying on the sofa in fairness). 100% recall if you have cold lamb.

Nandiniti · 10/11/2021 14:11

Mine is a young terrier, it varies from 25% - 99% depending on what he's got his eyes or snout on.

gogohm · 10/11/2021 14:12

99.99 - in 10 years the only time he didn't recall was a female dog in season, my dog (and at least 8 others) were trailing her, my dog has been neutered but that didn't stop him! He thought about not coming back when he discovered sheep around the bend but came after 20 seconds or so of firm words.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 10/11/2021 14:13

My collie has 100% track record of recall. As in he has never once failed to come back to me when called, even as a pup.

gogohm · 10/11/2021 14:13

@poorbuthappy

Snap

LadyCatStark · 10/11/2021 14:15

Mine is an adolescent so went from 99% recall to 50% and is now getting better again. It’s other dogs that he wants to go to. I do wish there was a proper system for knowing from a distance whether a dog will be up for a play or not.

MuthaFunka61 · 10/11/2021 14:16

Another 99.9% here, which is 99.9% better than when he came to me 3 years ago.
Every day's a school day

Justwhy123 · 10/11/2021 14:17

No - we have a sighthound with a high prey drive. He’s great as long as he doesn’t catch sight off anything.

We can only let him off in enclosed paddocks.

StormyCornishSeas · 10/11/2021 14:18

@ImperfectTents

Depends how good the treats are
This and how tempting the distraction of squirrels is.

StormyDog is could at sit and stay. But if she's gone off in search of a rodent then forget it.
