Does your dog have 100% recall?

My 14 month old has developed a bit more confidence and selective deafness so is back on a long line for now in situations where I know he's likely to ignore me. But I read on here all the time that dogs should not be off lead in a public place unless they have 100 % recall. This feels a way off for me at the moment. But does any dog really have 100%? (and any tips on how you got there welcome!)

You are doing hundred percent the right thing.Train the recall on the long lead for a couple of months and you will have a dog with a 100%recall.just be patient.my collies are 100% recall, but then they are collies😀

BleuJay · 26/11/2021 11:31

Mine didn’t as I they would go deaf sometimes at the sound of their name being called, us I would sometimes call them by the wrong name!

I now use the word ‘SWEETIES’ which may make me sound like a twit but it gets instant response and immediate recall as they will receive a treat.

A couple of mine are Sighthounds and this works brilliantly for them.

At the beginning of a walk I show them that I am carrying treats and that means that they will often pop back over to me on the off chance they might get one!

I'm another who has a border collie with amazing recall. If i have a ball in my hand she won't even take her eyes off me. My pom however is never allowed off the lead because although he is super friendly, he is also a dickhead who doesn't listen to a word I say if we're out.

My collies just the same with the ball.other breeds are sweet, but no other breed beats a collie brainGrin

Yes, lab, 100% recall providing I have dog treats but 100 % no recall whatsoever if I forget to take treats on walks, so she then remains on the leadGrin

Mediumred · 27/11/2021 02:23

Collie owners, can I ask when the amazing recall kicked in? Ours was a horror for occasional running after joggers/cyclists. She’s much better now but seems obsessed with other dogs still. She definitely loves a ball and I is super focused on me when I am holding it but then I would throw it and then she would have it and be free to chase after other things, (the birds/squirrels/other dogs), I have been training her to bring it back immediately so hope that will help.

She’s always on the long line at the mo as she’s in season we think, she’s coming up to a year, will it just click and she will have this amazing recall? She is definitely more ball-focused than treat focused.

Thatldo · 27/11/2021 08:14

I think some collies start their ball obsession a bit later. My collie is now just over a year old and very good with the ball, but when she sees a dog that she played with as a puppy, she will go to it just to say hello and then come back. Also, when my collie was on heat, her behaviour changed quite a bit.she was quite anxious and timid during that time.some collies are also very stroppy, usually actually the very clever ones.make sure, you are always the bossGrin

ladybee28 · 30/11/2021 19:58

My boy is about 90% but because he's old it's quite a SLOW 90% Grin

We'll be up a quiet back country lane and I'll see a car coming in the distance.

I'll call him, he'll look up and saaaaauuuunter soooooo sloooooowly toward me, sniffing a pretty flower along the way....

He's doing what I asked, I can't be cross –but In His Own Time Thank You Very Much.

bengalcat · 30/11/2021 20:03

My sight hound gets a bit dodgy if it’s me or a squirrel but unless she’s already taken off she adopts an intense gaze and hunting pose so if I’m close enough I can grab her .

3ormoredogs · 30/11/2021 20:21

I would say mine are 99% but I still put them on lead if we see another dog just to take temptation away Grin

CovidCorvid · 30/11/2021 20:27

99.9%. She walks to heel off lead most of the time and if she has got distracted by a nice smell she will come when called. People stop and compliment me on her behaviour. I sheep trained her when she was a puppy and she ignores sheep (in laws sheep before anyone says anything). I also spent time training her to ignore cyclists as she initially thought they were fun to run along after….she will now sit and maintain eye contact with me until they’ve gone past. The only time she’s a bit of a bugger is if a rabbit appears under her nose and runs……she will stop but not straight away….takes about 10-20 seconds for it to sink in that I’m screaming at her and then she does come slinking back. She totally ignores other dogs.

RestingStitchFace · 01/12/2021 22:20

Nope. We have a scent hound and we joke that her nose and ears don't work at the same time. Once she's got a scent, she's utterly deaf. We only let her off the lead in enclosed spaces.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2021 22:25

99%

The squirrel 🐿 is the other 1%

Shannith · 01/12/2021 22:36

Mine is 100 now but she went teenage between about 9-13 months.

It's rock solid now - she'll whip round mid chase. I've put a LOT of work into it. I had her on a lunge line when it was a bit iffy.

I still do recall work at least 20% of every walk. She's a food obsessed lab which helps enormously.

I've also had lurcher and greyhounds with zero and they were never off lead. Until they got old and could no longer bog off.

Pickles89 · 01/12/2021 22:39

Yes (if very distracted might need to repeat a couple of times, but she always does come back then) except if squirrels are involved. Squirrels are her one weakness. She KNOWS she mustn't chase them, she knows she'll get a telling off and put on the lead if she does, but the temptation overrides all.

Pickles89 · 01/12/2021 22:42

@LaurieFairyCake Haha, yep! What breed is yours? Ours is a Border Colie but a real anomaly. Can totally take or leave a ball but her prey drive is high.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2021 22:51

A terrier (Scottie) Grin
