Has anyone rehired from Greece?

Just as above, really. After 7 dogless years, preceded by 18 or 20 years with three gorgeous rescues in total, we are in the perfect place to offer another hound a home, but we have been struggling to find the right one. Now, though, we think we might have... but he is in Greece until certain conditions regarding fostering or adoption can be met. He will be neutered, chipped and vaccinated - plus blood tested for, eg, tick-borne diseases. The charity responsible for rehoming in the UK checks out as legit, and the specific woman I am dealing with comes across as professional and knowledge, as well as compassionate. But..... could I be missing something? Does anyone have any useful experience they could share?

We rehomed from Bulgaria. A great rescue who cat/child/dog test their dogs and as they are a British couple everything is done to British veterinary standards. Our dog is exactly as described, she needed time to adapt to her new life but they gave lots of support after rehoming her.

multivac · 26/09/2021 13:26

Thanks. That's good to read. Were you me to meet her IRL before a final commitment? And Also, if you don't mind sharing, what was the adoption fee?

OP posts:
joopy79 · 26/09/2021 13:44

No, but they do have fosters in the UK, I imagine if it didn't work they would ask for someone in the UK to foster the dog. They are quite careful with how they re-home them, they wouldn't let me adopt the one I enquired about but suggested a different dog that would suit our family better.

joopy79 · 26/09/2021 13:45

Fee was just under £400, this included transportation.

GreenEggsAndHamPlease · 26/09/2021 13:52

Just be careful OP, we had a failed adoption from overseas, the dog had issues we weren't made aware of and we couldn't meet his needs, absolutely heartbreaking situation. I would just make sure that a)the dog is in foster here in the UK, ideally somewhere close enough for you to go and visit, and b) they offer a 2 week trial period by which time you will have a fair idea of whether you can work with the dog. A lot of these dogs have been on the streets or in a pound and come with their own issues. Ours had bad separation anxiety and was terrified of going in the car, used to cower if a truck went down the street, hated crowds of people, I could go on, we were told none of this.
I'm sure there are lots of reputable charities out there who do their very best, but just try and do as much research as possible before you go ahead.

We have a romanian rescue dog from safe rescue. They bring them over and put with foster familys so you can meet them here before committing. Our dog is wonderful.

multivac · 26/09/2021 14:44

Thanks all. That's my main concern, Greeneggs - the last thing I want is to add to an animal's distress!

I walk a dog that was re-homed from Cyprus.

He is lovely with people but had absolutely zero training before arriving in the UK. He's leash reactive (which in all honesty is only getting worse the more settled he becomes), barks, snarls and lunges at pretty much every dog he meets.

While you will hear a lot of positive stories about these dogs, not every story is a success. Overseas rescues are also well-known for having no recall whatsoever and there are plenty of stories of dogs escaping/slipping leads, bolting and disappearing for weeks (if not longer) as they go to ground and won't come to anyone.

IseeScottishhills · 26/09/2021 19:16

Two friends have rehomed a dogs from Greece one through a reputable charity the other was a private arrangement. Both dogs were running loose on the streets. One friend in particular was worried before the dog arrived but in both cases it’s been a great success, the dogs have lovely temperaments and both settled very quickly into their new homes. I’m sure others will tell you different stories but it doesn’t have to be a disaster.

..."the last thing I want is to add to an animal's distress!"

If you are serious about this please find a uk dog.

multivac · 27/09/2021 09:31

"If you are serious about this please find a uk dog."
You are going to have to explain that a little more, please (we have been looking at UK rescues, of course - and, as mentioned in the OP, have homed three previously - but none so far has been a good match).

@joopy79 - was this Santerpaws? We have one from there too, she's wonderful.

joopy79 · 29/09/2021 14:56

@Creamcrackersandricecakes yes! They're brilliant.

TotoBay · 29/09/2021 23:04

Cyprus too for UK linked shelters- e.g. rehomingcypruspointers.co.uk

multivac · 19/10/2021 18:36

Update - he's arrived, and he's splendid. Calm, friendly and quick to learn the basics; he's mixed breed, mostly Doberman. Still very overwhelmed by everything after 12+ hours of travel yesterday, so we are taking it very, very slowly; but he's absolutely as described and expected, and the support from the 'broker' has been, and continues to be, excellent. Microchip checked out, too.

So glad he is settling in.
I work with the wonderful Greek Animal Rescue and have adopted many greekies.
Yours looks like he has a splash of Greek hunting dog in there too.
Greek dogs are usually so loving and make great pets.
I read so many threads on here of people buying cockapoos, always cockapoos.
It’s so sad when shelters are bursting at the seams.

multivac · 19/10/2021 20:50

Thanks. You are not the first to mention the possibility of a splash of hunting dog in there; he's had his tail docked, too (😥) - although we have been assured that was due to 'an infection'. He's gorgeous, anyway, and wee are looking forward to helping him grow in confidence.

Anotherhill · 19/10/2021 22:13

Can I advise you to get him screened for exotic diseases once he has settled in.vets are seeing imported diseases more and more at the moment which be a risk to humans sncnuk animals.

FreshFreesias · 20/10/2021 09:38

Hopefully he will have been tested for leish and echlicia (spelling). Both of mine had that but eminently treatable and have no symptoms.

kikipie · 20/10/2021 09:47

I know a charity that rehomes a lot of dogs from Greece and Portugal. Very successfully

OP he's gorgeous!

We have a dog from Cyprus. Rescued through Wild at Heart who are fantastic.

She is the most perfect dog, had her for 3 years now. Also have a Romanian who was adopted much older. They are perfect dogs, well behaved, easy to train and GORGEOUS.

We got the Dog DNA test from Wisdom Panel, it was a shock ahha!

Yes, he has been tested for both, and is clear.

Yes, we have an appointment at the vet's tomorrow, and will discuss this then.

Can I ask what broker you used to bring him over op? I'd love to set up a charity here in the UK to bring dogs over from a Greek charity I volunteered at.
