I have had dogs since I was young however this one is a challenge he doesn't like strangers. I love this dog more than I've ever loved any previous.
I have never been scared of dogs, I have always loved dogs and thought most were friendly but I have now developed a phobia of them so much so that I don't go anywhere near strange dogs, I actively cross the road to avoid them.
My daughter wants a dog and I get tense when she mentions it and I'm dreading it.

It's not clear from your post if you already have a dog.

How old is your daughter? Will the dog live with you?

Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 08:43

Yes I have a dog
Yes my daughter lives with me

So, you have an unfriendly dog who dislikes other dogs?

Your daughter wants to introduce an extra dog into the household?

Just refuse.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2021 08:49

i dont think you should get a dog for a daughter in her twenties, it will be a milestone round her neck.
does she plan to live with you for the next 10/15 years?

NoSquirrels · 28/08/2021 08:50

So your dog doesn’t like strangers, so you avoid - and now you’ve developed a fear of strange dogs?

I think if your daughter gets a dog you’ll be fine. It won’t be a ‘strange dog’ once you get to know it. You’ll need to do careful introductions between both dogs and then they’ll probably be fine too. Might take a bit of time.

NoSquirrels · 28/08/2021 08:51

Oh, she lives with you?

She can’t get a dog herself when she’s not living in her own place.

Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:08

All dogs apart from my own. She's Autisic so I'd have to go with her and meet pups and parents which terrifies me.

I’m sorry I have absolutely no clue what you mean at all.
I also read it as you have a dog that hates other dogs, your daughter lives with you and wants a dog but you have become frightened of strange dogs.
I’m not sure how else what you’ve written can be interpreted really.

Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:17

This one is a challenge and doesn't like strangers

strangers meaning people. If I meant strange dogs I would of put strange dogs

@Shamsa03

So you have a dog who doesn't like strangers (as in humans) Your adult daughter wants a dog (I find it strange this - as it means she doesn't see the dog in your house as hers / the family's) You have developed a phobia of dogs - do you mean you are worried about your dog meeting a stranger and something bad happening Would your daughter pay for the dog and its upkeep? I would say NO - it's your house and if it makes you uncomfortable- no But I also think your dog needs training / a behaviourist
Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:24

Nothing strange about it. It will be her dog not mine she's paying for it and doing all of the care.
No, my dog is fine with other dogs. I mean me
My dog has had help to no avail.

OP posts:
Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:28

Interesting how people have read he doesn't like strangers and decided to interpret that into he doesn't like dogs.

I have a phobia of dogs does not mean my dog has

OP posts:
MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2021 09:35

oh, can you persuade her to get something else?
have you tried any other pets op?

Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:38

My dog doesn't like strangers.
My dog likes other dogs
I don't like dogs. I don't want another dog in the same house as me apart from my dog and I don't want one after he's gone(as in passed away for people that mis read)
Dogs make me uncomfortable
My daughter wants a dog she is Autisic so she's living with me, saying no to a adult with autism is not that the same as saying no to someone who doesn't.

OP posts:
Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:40

@MrsLargeEmbodied

oh, can you persuade her to get something else? have you tried any other pets op?
I've tried a cat, rabbit, rat, fish but it's impossible she's Autisic so not easily persuaded. She's dead set on a dog.
OP posts:
MumofSpud · 28/08/2021 09:47

Did something trigger you new found phobia?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2021 09:49

can she volunteer with dogs?

Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:53

@MumofSpud

Did something trigger you new found phobia?
Yes I presume it was my dog that triggered it but I'm not scared of him which doesn't really make sense.
OP posts:
Shamsa03 · 28/08/2021 09:54

@MrsLargeEmbodied

can she volunteer with dogs?
I wish she would.
OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2021 09:55

It’s your house and you dint want another dog so she can’t have one.
I appreciate it must be difficult as she’s autistic but it’s ok to say no to her anyway

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2021 09:56

i would suggest she volunteers,
you can phrase it in a way to make her feel she is getting worthwhile experience
