Miniature Schauzers

Hi Mumsnetters. We are thinking of getting a miniature schnauzer to join our family of 4. Does anyone have one and how do they find them? Are they energetic but also happy to relax? Some mention that are a bit aloof is that true? I love their cute faces 😀

I haven't had one but know three people who do. They are energetic and seem to like to be busy. Very barky too. They don't shed which is a benefit. They don't seem to warm to visitors particularly.

Sloelydoesit · 29/08/2021 13:32

I have a 17 week miniature Schnauzer puppy. He's brilliant - loves everyone, isn't horrid to the cats, smart, was quickly toilet trained and super affectionate. I would definitely recommend

HarrisMcCoo · 29/08/2021 13:43

I have enquired about them through the breed club. Many responsible breeders have stopped breeding for now. I know that there are none in Scotland at the moment. Difficult to get a hold of one by all accounts...which is probably a good thing as it means less likely to be puppy farmed.

BeaBeaBuzz · 29/08/2021 13:45

In my experience bit aloof, barky but not particularly demanding exercise wise

Sisisimone · 29/08/2021 13:51

I'm surprised by this as virtually every new pup I meet at the moment is a miniature schnauzer. Very popular here (NW). They are lovely looking dogs but every owner I speak to says that they bark ALOT

icedcoffees · 29/08/2021 14:01

They're very cute, but in my experience they're very barky and can be a bit funny with strangers.

An hour a day should be fine exercise-wise.

sweetheartyparty · 29/08/2021 14:12

I've had 2 and they both had very different personalities. One was (female) energetic, cheeky and smart. The other (male) was laid back, aloof and well not so smart. But both brilliant dogs and I miss them very much . We currently have an 8 week miniature bull terrier and schnauzers seem much easier by comparison

sweetheartyparty · 29/08/2021 14:14

I didn't think they were too barky but we lived at the end of a cul de sac

I was surprised too. I know a woman local to me that has one, he works as a therapy pet. But he is at least a few years old now. I have not seen her recently to ask about the breeder she used, but will if I see her in the future.

This was just a few days ago I was told there are no breeders in Scotland from the admin of Miniature Schnauzer Club.

Sloelydoesit · 29/08/2021 14:29

We've not had the barking start yet! The occasional 'wuf' only. I'll report back when it does!!!

LavendarMoon · 29/08/2021 14:36

I used to think they were cute but have got to know half a dozen through friends and all of them (admittedly all male if it makes a difference) have been barky and aloof. Not affectionate. I wouldn’t want one now. Their owners all love them though 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do love dogs generally.

GiveMeAUserName123 · 29/08/2021 14:41

Good points,

Very clever, easy to toilet train, easy to train in general and pick things up quickly. Very loyal, let’s you know when someone is at the door, very cuddly. Don’t shed, that’s a massive massive plus point, no dog hair on your black trousers.

Bad points
Don’t really like people who don’t live with them in their house and part of the pack, don’t really tolerate them so watch them with young kids.
Can bark a bit too much at the door.

GiveMeAUserName123 · 29/08/2021 14:42

Ours is not badly at all, just when the door goes but we encouraged that behaviour, we work in the garden and don’t always hear the bell so his a big help. Doesn’t bark at anything else.

AreYouReally · 29/08/2021 14:44

Very narky. Personally I couldn't cope with the noise - one I know is VERY high pitched.

AreYouReally · 29/08/2021 14:44

Barky!*

nevercannevercanever · 31/08/2021 22:00

Thanks everyone Smile

Ours is 6 years old. They are wonderful in my opinion! Loads of character, stubborn (but in a cute way), quirky and always ready to play. Ours is not barky.

They don’t shed but need regular grooming, I pay £35 every 6 weeks. You will need to brush every day as they get matted very easily.

I have a friend who has one. He is adorable, cute and loyal, very good with children. However dogs are individuals, you can never really tell what they will be like until you have one.

ActonSquirrel · 31/08/2021 22:31

A colleague has one. Apparently they were bred to be alert dogs and they bark a lot because of it

Whilst wfh my colleague spends half the time in meeting ls muting and shouting at the dog to stfu.

It barks at the postman and anyone who comes to the door

hennybeans · 31/08/2021 22:38

My girl is the most affectionate, cuddly lap dog. Well behaved in the house, she's never damaged anything after her big teeth came through. But she is barky at the door, at other dogs on walks or if she can hear a dog walking past the house. She's very protective over her family. She also takes a long time to warm up to people not in our immediate family. She also wasn't very keen on my DC for the first few years, but loves them now. She's just a bit timid in general. But we do all completely love her.
She doesn't shed at all, no drool, no smell in my opinion, no mess in the house at all.

ToastandJamandTea · 31/08/2021 22:45

My pup is 17 weeks now and I'm so glad he's joined us! Waited two years for a good breeder and I have zero regrets.
He's really funny, clever, and affectionate.
We've just taken him camping for a week and he was so well behaved.
He very rarely barks at the moment.

Guineapigbridge · 31/08/2021 22:50

I adore mine! He's the BEST dog: loyal, affectionate, funny. He needs two decent walks a day and he loves playing with the kids and being cuddled by me. He has the cutest face and fluffy ears. He doesn't bark because we put a lot of effort into training him not to when he was a puppy (firmly holding his back and saying NO! when he did). He hates being left alone though, so only get one if you're going to be around at home often. He'd go crazy if left for more than a few hours.

There is that!
Moonlaserbearwolf · 31/08/2021 23:06

I love them! The few I know are very barky at first, but soon quieten down after they finished their guarding. I think it would be nearly impossible to stop a schnauzer barking completely - it’s their nature - so you have to be prepared for that. The flip side is that they are incredibly loyal, loving dogs. The schnauzers I know are very good at relaxing on the sofa!
