Is your dog allowed upstairs?

Our puppy is crate trained so I can stick him in his crate is needs be. He's very happy in there. He sleeps in his crate and has never cried going in. We've been letting him come upstairs. But every dog owner I know doesn't let their dog upstairs. Just wondering if this is the norm? He's still little so I could start training him to stay downstairs (will need a gate to get us started).

Just wanted to know if this is the norm?

Im in bed enjoying a lie in. My dog is in bed with me. I cant sleep if he isn't. DP,not so much Grin hes a small dog though

HelenHywater · 21/08/2021 09:45

my dogs are allowed upstairs, but not in my room. My dc take them into their rooms. The cats know my room is their safe space.

When the dc are at their dads the dogs sleep in the crate.

girlmom21 · 21/08/2021 09:47

I've never had a dog who's not allowed upstairs

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/08/2021 09:48

No, we have a cat who was here first and has the run of the house, upstairs is his safe haven away from the dog trying to be his best friend.

StrongCoffeeAvalanche · 21/08/2021 09:50

Thanks for your replies. It sounds like it's personal preference Smile

Nope, not allowed upstairs. He's an animal, with big pointy teeth, and puts his face and feet in all sorts of crap. So no, he stays downstairs away from my clean comfy bed.

harriethoyle · 21/08/2021 09:52

None of my dogs have been allowed upstairs - although one of them pottered into the bathroom the other day when I was in the tub so goodness knows what happens when I go out!

Manabanaba · 21/08/2021 09:53

I’m with beyond. My big beautiful slobbering mess is kept downstairs at all time.

StrongCoffeeAvalanche · 21/08/2021 09:58

Thanks again. For those who trained their dogs to stay down did you just use a baby gate and tell them no if they tried to come up?

Mine sleeps in a dog bed in my room. She’s very biddable though and although she sometimes jumps up, she’ll also get off if told. “Basket!” is one of the few words she knows 🥰
In the daytime I take her bed out and shit the door. Otherwise she’s on my pillow. Hmm

thesunwillout · 21/08/2021 10:01

To start with no as I didn't trust her not to pee and I wanted her to sleep at night downstairs in crate in kitchen.

I started letting her come upstairs after about 2 weeks for visits, and that was that tho she doesn't sleep in my room at night.

Etinox · 21/08/2021 10:02

I shut the door! Blush

No, she’s not. However we went camping recently and she slept on our airbed with us the whole time. I’d let her upstairs but DH won’t...I’ve told him that if he ever leaves she’ll be in his side of the bed that night!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/08/2021 10:05

I use a stairgate.

Chasingsquirrels · 21/08/2021 10:06

I've got a gate across the bottom of the hall, so the dog can't get to the stairs or the front door.
He would escape if he could, and attack the post, so it just works for us. I never had a staircase for the kids and now have 2 for the dog (also have one across the utility/kitchen door so I can contain him in the utility without shutting the door plus separate him from DPs dog on the nights DP is here).

NeverEatShreddedWheats · 21/08/2021 10:07

I've never know anyone who didn't allow their dog upstairs. It's weird to me to do so. They're a member of the family so why would I shut half of the house off to them?

FazedNotPhased · 21/08/2021 10:07

One is, one isn't. Old dog needs space away from puppy. And to be honest, when old dog is gone I don't want a dog in my bedroom again.

Musmerian · 21/08/2021 10:07

Our dog has wormed his way into our bed now. I always vowed I wouldn’t…

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 21/08/2021 10:08

They're allowed up under close supervision for short periods of time (a couple of minutes). They associate upstairs with being washed, which they don't like all that much*, so don't tend to go up on their own.

*Manky pond? Ice-cold muddy stream! Yay, I'm in! Warm clean bath? What DO you take me for?

Worriesandwobbles · 21/08/2021 10:09

We have a stair gate at the bottom and the dog stays downstairs in the daytime. At night he comes up with me to my bedroom but doesn't have free roam of upstairs (the kids rooms are out of bounds) the cats have upstairs in the day.

thesunwillout · 21/08/2021 10:09

Definitely depends on slobber too.

Mines not a wet type of doggy iyswim.

I had a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs for 4 yrs. One day I just thought why have I still got that there.

This was a few months ago. Depends on the dog. Mine listens more now she's older.

Jack Russell thing.

Notonthestairs · 21/08/2021 10:09

We had a stair gate until she was 1. That was mainly because of Lego/barbies lying around upstairs but also because we have steep stairs and I was worried about pressure on her her joints.

Now she can go upstairs and will take herself off for a nap on the spare bed.

Letsrunabath · 21/08/2021 10:13

Had loads of dogs over the years and never allowed them upstairs. Dogs are happiest when they are bottom of the pecking order and don’t have to prove anything. We have always had the most loving of dogs and very well behaved they get loads of attention from us without needing to come upstairs.

princesspeppax · 21/08/2021 10:13

Ours is allowed up the stairs and in our bedroom and we have a baby gate on the upstairs landing so he doesn't get in the kids rooms - mainly because they are still young and spend a lot of time playing / rolling around the floor and our dog is a fluffy monster so want to try avoid runing their new bedroom carpets
