Is your dog allowed upstairs?

Our puppy is crate trained so I can stick him in his crate is needs be. He's very happy in there. He sleeps in his crate and has never cried going in. We've been letting him come upstairs. But every dog owner I know doesn't let their dog upstairs. Just wondering if this is the norm? He's still little so I could start training him to stay downstairs (will need a gate to get us started).

Just wanted to know if this is the norm?

Yes, he often plonks himself on my bedroom floor if I'm getting ready or lays on the landing. But he sleeps in his own bed downstairs in the kitchen of a night. On another note what would happen if someone breaks in upstairs but your dog is be too scared to go up because they're not allowed too? Seems a strange concept to me. Plus he's tidier upstairs than the kids

No. Grim.

We don't let our dog go upstairs. He doesn't mind - he likes his crate and often slopes off into it to chill. The cats however, have free reign - it would be near on impossible to stop them. Upstairs is very much their domain and it is their dog free safe space.

He’s allowed up and goes into the kids bedrooms but not ours as dh sometimes has an allergic reaction to him
He doesn’t come up overnight though he sleeps in the dining room

Yes

Mine are poodles, so no moulting. But I still don't let them sleep on my bed. That's my space at night when I'm shattered.
They'll pop in during the day when they're following me about and jump up to get a better view out the window! I don't mind that. And they are allowed to snuggle on the couch with me in the evening before beds in the kitchen. It's a really easy one to vacuum.
They are absolutely happy. We're all knackered come bedtime and need our own undisturbed space it seems.

Yes both are. My little Yorkie takes herself to bed same time every night. She sleeps on the floor snoring away. When my dh goes to work in morning she jumps in for cuddles and the jack russel too xx

I’ve got a lab, he came upstairs when he was little but vet advised against it due to stress on joints. So we stopped allowing him up, using a stair gate he was ok with it.

Age 6 he tore his cruciate! So that was the end of stairs/steps full stop.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 22/08/2021 09:40

I wish we’d never allowed ours upstairs. Muddy paws, restless sleeper, she snores, she sighs at dh’s snoring….

If we have another dog it’ll be not on chairs or upstairs.

Dh loves having her sleep in th3 bed with us and a cuddle on the sofa….sigh.

Our dog isn't allowed upstairs for multiple reasons. The main one is that the breeder told us going up and down is really bad for their joints (she is a Labrador and they have risk of hip issues in later life). But also because in summer she sheds a lot of hair and the tiled downstairs areas are so much easier to keep clean. Then there's the risk of her getting locked upstairs accidentally and having accidents in the house.

We’re 6 weeks into puppy ownership - we’ve got a stairgate to the hallway so we control access to the living room and upstairs. The biting/chewing stuff is getting much better but she does occasionally wee where she shouldn’t still and and I certainly don’t trust her to roam around the house completely unsupervised just yet! She comes into our bed for a cuddle in the mornings (it’s my fave bit of the day 🥰)

mintybobs · 22/08/2021 18:23

Nope. Just as dogs deserve a safe quiet space of their own to relax and be on their own without being pestered or disturbed- so do I and I dont see anything wrong with that. She has the run of the house downstairs and its hard floors (she's a puppy- so better for cleaning up accidents). I'm not willing to let her upstairs as thats carpet and much harder to clean.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 22/08/2021 18:43

No other member of my family rolls in unmentionable things, eats indigestible or disgusting objects or farts paint-stripping emissions
I’ve never allowed a dog upstairs in 43 years and I don’t intend to change
😄

@YanTanTethera123 you've obviously not met my DH Grin

HarrisMcCoo · 22/08/2021 18:45

No. Doesn't mean she doesn't try!

ceebee21 · 22/08/2021 22:49

Ours only comes up when we let him. We have a stair gate so he can't get up there when we are out or just when he feels like it.

Figgyboa · 22/08/2021 23:03

I dont have stairs but my dogs are allowed anywhere in the house.

cookiecreampie · 23/08/2021 13:01

Mine sleeps beside my bed in a pet carrier ( he's only 7 weeks) and he will cuddle on our bed. When he's bigger he'll be on his own bed in the bedroom or on our bed. I won't let him upstairs when I'm not there as he is a miniature breed and our stairs are steep.
