Why is my dog being such an asshole today?

First holiday away with DDog; he is 18 months old.

As I type I am having to ignore his god awful whining because I won’t let him out for the 100th time. He doesn’t need to toilet, he has been on a lovely walk and should be ready to collapse in a nap by now .

He’s refusing to settle. We were supposed to be going to a small children’s event in the local pub across the road but because he won’t settle (barking and barking when left for 5 minutes); I’ve had to stay home and DH has taken the DC.

The DC who were desperate for a dog are pissed off I haven’t gone. I’ve explained we have to make sacrifices for our pets and they are old enough to understand but are still upset.

I’m fucked off that my one and only chance of sitting down to read my book is being hijacked by the dog whining and whining for some reason he only knows.

Are holidays like this normal with dogs? Are they usually so unsettled?

Anxiety at being in a strange location?
In pain or feeling ill?
I doubt he's just decided to be difficult. Clearly he's distressed by something.

MyDogIsAnAss · 17/08/2021 16:14

He’s not in pain or feeling ill. He just wants to be out.

Anxiety in a new location is a possibility but the idea he’s just decided to be difficult is a strong possibility too Grin

He has finally collapsed in to a snoring slumber and I love him again Grin

Mine does that sometimes. More so recently as we’ve moved and he’s getting used to new places and noises. Bit whiny and whingy and barky. I deal with toileting etc when he’s settled. He’s currently walking round and round a table looking at my boyfriend as he will pander to it. When he’s at home with me alone he’s mr chilled he knows he’ll let him out etc.

Obs you’re away so it’s a bit different, ignore the whining etc
Praise him when he does settle, walk or let him out for a wee from a settle rather than an place of high arousal. Mine gets kongs/yak bone etc when he’s quite unsettled as they help him just chew it out and it’s a way to self settle, doesn’t always work mind you. Licky mat too is good or letting them have a good sniff outside. I’m sure he’ll be fine once he’s settled down.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/08/2021 16:48

He’s being a bastard because he’s young, he’s in a new place and if the children were all excited he might have picked that excitement from them.

My dogs have days where they're just complete arseholes for absolutely no good reason. I swear they hold a meeting during the night and decide all the ways they can piss me off the next day. And then mid afternoon when putting them up for adoption is seeming like a good idea (KIDDING!!) they do something incredibly cute and I love them again. So yeah I do think they can be arseholes for the sake of it.

Sounds like your pup is anxious in the new location plus he's being an 18 month old (one of mine is that age and he's an absolute arse who winds the others up). But you can never fully rule out him just being a knob for the sake of it Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/08/2021 17:03

My DS was a complete asshole throughout our holiday the year he was 6. I think every life form must have at least one 'asshole on holiday' phase. Grin

I think different dogs have different thresholds.

A few years back my dog travelled by car to my parents and had a lovely time.

This year we went back but this time travelled by train and then by bus (dog has been on both before) and I really didn’t think it would be an issue.

We had a massive walk to get to the train station, long train journey, stopped off in a city centre for something to eat, bus journey and it was all a bit much.
When we got to my parents she spent most of her time pacing which is very unlike her.

The next day when not out and about she was sleeping which is how she normally behaves.

I think your dog was probably just s but overwhelmed and will be back to normal soon

Sagaris · 17/08/2021 17:14

Are there any bitches in season nearby? That would make the most placid dog very unsettled! Wink

Medievalist · 17/08/2021 19:04

Dogs don't decide to be difficult.

I would never refer to any of my dogs as an 'asshole' or 'bastard'. Really very unpleasant.

I’m sure they will survive their hurt feelings.

Oh wow - such a witty remark!

Nothing to do with hurt feelings. Just indicative of a rather unpleasant attitude. 🤷‍♀️

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/08/2021 20:19

Oh blimey I've been rumbled.

I hate the bastards, I only keep them, and feed them, and walk then and play with them because I have an unpleasant attitude towards them, you clearly know me and my dogs so well.

Medievalist · 17/08/2021 20:34

you clearly know me and my dogs so well.

Obviously I don't. That's why I used the word 'indicative' ...

icedcoffees · 17/08/2021 20:38

I'm glad he's settled now! But I think it's pretty common - new places, new routines, new smells, lots of excitement, probably lots of travel and car journeys and all sorts.

Mine is excellent on holiday for some reason but if I take him to a friends' house he won't settle and gets really giddy, lol.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/08/2021 20:43

Not sure who pissed in your kibble, Medievalist but why don't you find something else to be judgmental about. I'm sure you'll manage.

But its accurate sometimes. And they don't know what it means.

Also I don't think dogs read mn.

I mean mine definitely don't. Some might I suppose.

shinynewapple21 · 17/08/2021 21:26

I was originally going to respond with 'because he's a dog' but having seen the circumstances I would think he's just letting you know he is a little anxious as he doesn't understand what's happening .

My dog is 5 now and still gets anxious at changes in his routine . In fact I think he's got worse as he's got older . We are doing away with him in a couple of weeks , sometimes we leave him with DS or in kennels but we're taking him this time as he loves to run on the beach . We are armed with pet remedy , calm coat, calming treats and some tablets we got from the vets for the journey .

shinynewapple21 · 17/08/2021 21:27

Just re-read my post! We are going away with him, not doing away with him Grin

Mine don't read MN either, I mean I'm assuming they don't anyway. I wonder what their user names would be Hmm
