best hoover for golden retriever

We are hopefully bringing our GR pup home in early September. She is very pale-coloured and likely to stay that way. The hair is going to be insane and really visible everywhere, when she starts to shed.

My old Miele HEPA corded hoover is about to die, and I want a reliable new one that can deal with a GR. Not keen on Dyson for a number of reasons.

I was originally considering a robo-hoover for labour-saving reasons -but a) we have a step down into the kitchen and b) we have two different floor surfaces - lounge room is carpet and rest of downstairs is wood. Doggo won't be allowed upstairs.

I think that rules out any even vaguely reasonably-priced robo hoovers, and to be honest I'm not sure it'd cope with a GR who will in time need daily grooming.

Was considering a Henry Harry (odd name...but good reviews and I rate Henry Hoovers generally)

Very grateful for any recommendations.

Henry is good and laminate floors help. Golden retrievers are the best.

StepGarlic · 12/08/2021 18:11

Don't know about the Henry Harry but if it's better than Henry Henry for pet hair you'll be fine

Lifeishitsometimes · 12/08/2021 18:17

@StepGarlic thank you.

The robot one is tempting because I am lazy and I also work full-time from home and have two really messy teens. But Harry may be a more economical choice!

Harry has a 'pet hair remover' whatever that might be. I really wish we had laminate or vinyl fake wood for the next few months...... wood doesn't really do well with dog wee and worse. Carpet neither but at least you can shampoo ...

With the carpets it helped to have the brush out on the hoover to kind of drag it out the carpet.made it like 10 times harder though.

Also try to train puppy to be brushed every day that way they'll be used to it and you can get a lot of the winter coat off outside by brushing.

Am jealous!

30degreesandmeltinghere · 12/08/2021 18:21

I have a Hetty Pet and 4 ddogs. Does a decent job!!

Bogoroditse · 12/08/2021 18:22

Fully recommend a robot , we have white floors and two labs and a Neato which tootles around more or less constantly. I reposition him to do rooms with steps because it is much less faff than getting the hoover out! Also have a Miele Pet hoover but the Neato does a pretty thorough job so don't feel the need to plug in the big one much.

Bogoroditse · 12/08/2021 18:23

...if you work full time you definitely deserve one! He deals beautifully with carpet and hard floors. I love mine more than the moulting dog right now....

Lifeishitsometimes · 12/08/2021 18:30

Ooh... So, I am stuck between a Neato type, a Harry, and a Hetty Pet.

I'd love to try a robot one, and I am also the only adult in the household ... hmm. Dilemmas :)

My DD has made a comprehensive training programme for the DDog to be, including daily brushing. Inevitably by me when she gets bored after 3 days.....

I have seen a video of a robot vacuum going across some ddoggy doo!!
Was a horror movie imo!!
Shock

Sussexmidwife · 12/08/2021 18:32

I am lucky enough to have a Goldie too. Finally bought a robot vac six weeks ago & it is fantastic! Copes with hard floors and carpet combo. My floors are probably cleaner than they have ever been! It goes under the sofa, pushing dog toys out as it goes. I just pop the roller out & clean it every day (takes about a minute). No more haze of cream hair everywhere.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/08/2021 18:33

Amazing your dog is going to get its own hoover. Can’t get my Cockapoo to do any cleaning at all.

Mychitchatdays · 12/08/2021 18:38

I have a Henry and a rubber brush which I use once a week on the carpets. I have a labrador and he sheds like crazy in the summer months.

Lifeishitsometimes · 12/08/2021 19:06

@30degreesandmeltinghere this did occur to me but I tried to expunge that image from my mind. Dog poo flying through the air and lodging in the internal dust chamber.. what a treat to come home to!
Luckily I am mostly a home worker and when I'm not DDog won't be here....but there is always the prospect of surprise gifts under the sofa...

@WorkingItOutAsIGo there's no space for freeloaders here. Everyone has a job ;)
@Mychitchatdays rubber brushes are very satisfying to use ... I'll be the only one using it tho so may need an automated helping hand. If someone could invent a robotic rubber brush I'd pay zillions for it...

Sebo are the best quality by far. Meile cat and dog and dyson are both not in the same league as sebo. They last for years and years and are easily repaired.

MotionActivatedDog · 12/08/2021 19:14

Ha! There is no hoover that can cope. There is only despair and futility. Grin

But we have to tackle the avalanche somehow. So, robo vacuum for daily maintenance. Henry will be fine for the hard flooring. For the carpet though- you’ll need something very sucky. I have a shark lift away for upstairs (carpet). I have a Miele too but hate it.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 12/08/2021 19:23

Rubber brush is your friend. I have a gr this is my second. We have a dyson and a Henry but I sweep the excess then go over the rest of the fur. It can be quite woolly. My boy is more light golden but fur is same. Goes on everything, wearing black will never be the same again

Quickchangeartiste · 12/08/2021 19:29

My 2 labs can shed, but nowhere as much as my previous GR. never went out without cream fur all over me.
Anyway, Sebo Felix Pet. Expensive, but I have had mine for 11 years, and all it’s needed are filters and I treated it to a new hose earlier this year.
Quite light weight and an extra long cord.

Leonberger · 12/08/2021 19:30

We have the giant version of retrievers and the only hoover that’s survived more than 6 months has been the hetty/henry.

We do have very minimal carpets and go over them with a rubber brush but hetty sucks up everything and it’s never had a single issue.

We’ve also got a shark anti hair wrap lift away which is hell on Earth to use and blocks at every use so is only used for the dog free room and a dyson which couldn’t cope either and got relegated to the cupboard as a spare. I think anything fancy or with filters etc just ends up clogged in seconds!

bingohandjob · 12/08/2021 21:12

Second the Sebo Felix. I think bagged vacuums have much better suction.

I don't think I've ever vacuumed so much in my whole life. Labs SHED!

30degreesandmeltinghere · 12/08/2021 21:58

Should maybe have mentioned one of our ddogs is a Husky..

You must try Sebo then, mine is still going strong after three cats and a double coated breed dog. Dyson and miele cat /dog both died years ago, rubbish.

I’ll add it too the list @WowIlikereallyhateyou. I currently have 5 hoovers and the offending article dog responsible for the furvalanche has departed so I’m trying to reduce my hoover hoard rather than add to it. That’s not to say I can’t buy more when the failures have been offloaded Grin

Darklane · 13/08/2021 14:25

I have very hairy dogs & a Henry downstairs & his girlfriend Henrietta upstairs to perform in the bedrooms Wink saves me lugging him upstairs.
What really helps though is to go over any carpets first with a rubber broom to loosen up any hair embedded in the carpet pile.
I have a rubber hand brush too to do the sofas as all our sofas tend to be six seaters Confused ( me the only human occupant)
rubber broom

Strokethefurrywall · 13/08/2021 14:29

We had a iRobot roomba and our dogs long hair killed it in about 9 months!
But fabulous whilst it lasted!

Apologies. Now off to see how many others have made the same joke.
