I’m going to hopefully be adopted by an ex-racing greyhound on Saturday.
What pointers (no pun intended) would you give me? We are adopting from the Greyhound Trust in our home county and the dog will come with collars, lead, warm coat etc. We have bowls on order.
Beds? Raincoat? Socialising?
Anything else? Thank you. Smile

Our greyhound needed a fleecy housecoat at night or when she was left alone at home for most of the colder months - usually Oct-March. If she didn’t she would get unsettled and then need to pee in the night/would pee in the kitchen.

Lovely pics of pointynoses on this thread.

@fourquenelles
My rescue lurcher looks very similar to your brindle, and I've seen a few lurchers on the net that look very similar. I'd love to know what his breed makeup is, my best guess is mostly greyhound + some saluki + a bit of something else, though I know I'll never know for sure. Do you know what breeds are in the mix in your brindle?

LidoLady · 09/08/2021 22:23

'Enhancing the life of your hound' Facebook group is run by a very experienced dog behaviourist who specialises in rescue greyhounds.

fourquenelles · 09/08/2021 22:23

@3beesinmybonnet He is supposedly a pure bred Spanish galgo and there are many of that breed like him. But I think there is something else in the mix because he is stockier and more "crooked" than my black galgo boys were - see photo. What he could be mixed with though is a mystery.

Thanks @fourquenelles
Your galgos look lovely, I don't know how anyone can treat them so badly.
I can really see the difference in your photos though - mine doesn't have the long nose for a start. I suppose I'll never know what mix he is but TBH I quite enjoy guessing!

geillisduncan · 10/08/2021 06:56

For the folk that have lurchers you can order DNA tests for about £70. We've had all ours done. It's fascinating finding out what they're made up of.

gerbo · 11/08/2021 11:54

The book Understanding Greyhounds by Mary Fox is excellent, so useful. Also the group on Facebook, Retired Greyhounds UK, is good.

gerbo · 11/08/2021 11:56

Ps enjoy your hound! We've had ours 5 months and he enriches our lives so much. Bringing him home was a culture shock, took some adjustment time, bit it's been so worth it. And it's still early days! He's still coming out of his shell.

Definitelyrandom · 11/08/2021 12:15

I'd second this. The history is fascinating and puts greyhounds into context and it not only has loads of practical tips but is incredibly reassuring.

My two pointy hounds! They fold up small but can also take up a lot of space if you’re trying to share a chair!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/08/2021 19:44

We used to meet 4 in the park being walked . My DD was terrified of dogs and wouldn't engage
My DS loved them and they reached over to him as close as their leads allowed to wrap themselves round him and PowerLean.
(Not a dog owner but they were lovely dogs for DD to eyeball at a distance . I think a DeathScream would've had her scarpering though Wink )

Brilliant news! Welcome to the world of the sighthound. Not even going to place a bet on when you get your next one (they are addictive and I found that one was not enough).

I am sure its been mentioned up thread but don't under estimate how far they can reach. The back of the counter tops are not a safe space for food!

Yep!

And they run fastest when they have a stolen sock in their mouth. Grin

MotionActivatedDog · 12/08/2021 14:24

No sock but still speed Grin

Can I join? We passed our home check yesterday and (fingers crossed) will be bringing home a lovely 4-year-old on Tues.

I'm trying to avoid the hound sleeping in our bedrooms, not because I'm fussy but the only real space is on the floor in the main bedroom, hallway is too narrow. DH works late shifts and needs sleep in the main bedroom, I'm relegated to.the spare room most of the time which doesn't have floor space. So I guess this means I'm sleeping downstairs when first bought home?

Routine...is is it ok to have set routines for walks but vary the lengths? Will they cope ok? We were thinking three a day, once settled, depending on who is around during the day, the morning or midday will be the longer ( DH tends to work after one in afternoons and me at home two weeks on but sometimes it varys).

Dd 17 had a great time walking the dog we hope to bring home yesterday. He saw a cyclist, golden retriever and horse for first time and was v good. The lady at the kennels was v good with her teaching her some basic walking commands. He was very responsive tbf. We have been warned they think he is still keen on small furries, so a harness and muzzle it is. Humans seem to.have more issues with muzzles then they do though!

When is yours arriving @QueenofLouisiana?

Anyone contemplating on getting a greyhound and are worried about how they might be with children. Don't be! They're soft as shit 😆 my big daft lad and my DD are thick as thieves! Caught her feeding him some of her crisps yesterday and laughing hysterically everytime he started chomping 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mine arrived yesterday. Photo taken today on a long walk. My other two don’t like her ☹️ But we do, she’s lovely.
