Nope mine is a Romanian street dog and is bomb proof. Not scared of fireworks, thunder etc. Bloody terrified of balloons though Confused

BestIsWest · 25/07/2021 13:23

Yes, one is. We have a Thundershirt which really works and sends him to sleep. I believe wrapping them up tightly can work too.

YanTanTethera123 · 25/07/2021 13:24

No, thankfully my Romanian wotsit didn’t bat an eyelid either but is scared of cats and bicycles. She takes no notice of noisy vehicles, farm machinery or dustbin lorries either!

m0therofdragons · 25/07/2021 13:25

Not usually but last night was so loud he did pant and struggle to settle.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 25/07/2021 13:25

thank you @BestIsWest

Yep. And fireworks too. Currently hiding head in the washing pile.Hmm

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 25/07/2021 14:45

Nope mine is sleeping through it!

HelpingJane · 25/07/2021 14:49

Nope! Gun dog and hard as nails Grin

Angrymum22 · 25/07/2021 15:09

No and not phased by fireworks but she is not a big fan of wooden planked bridges over streams or decking. We are currently replacing the floor in the bathroom and the exposed floorboards are freaking her out!

CMOTDibbler · 25/07/2021 15:17

Yes, but he has an adaptil collar on at the moment, and it really helps him

thistimelastweek · 25/07/2021 15:20

She's barking at it! Just annoys her.

Scutterbug · 25/07/2021 15:22

No mine isn’t but when she was younger we always acted like storms or fireworks were really exciting so she saw them as something fun 😂

SoddingWeddings · 25/07/2021 15:25

Neither dog (another Romanian street dog and a Cornish somethingorother) nor the cat give two hoots. The cat likes to watch the lightning from the garden unless it's raining.

My parents dog though was hysterical and ended up being sedated for Bonfire Night. If they aren't that bad, highly recommend the thundeshirt as well - cheaper versions didn't seem to be as effective.

May I ask where you bought the Thundershirt from please? My in-laws dog is terrified of thunder and anything is worth trying. She used to be fine until the age of around 3 she heard a very, very loud thunder when she was in the garden and ever since then there's been no help for her. She's otherwise not bothered about sudden or loud noises. Tried everything and no change. Apparently she spent most of today under a bed.

Be careful with Thundershirts best used with the advice of a qualified behaviourist.

Initially they were thought to be an answer for fearful dogs but more research has shown that dogs that appear to be calm wearing them are actually shut down and have more anxiety.

A bit like when you put a coat on a dog and it does not move as it is unsure but take the coat off and the dog is happy to move around. You need to observe the dogs body language carefully when wearing one.

Strokethefurrywall · 25/07/2021 19:27

Yes dog2 is terrified which is great fun seeing as we live in Caribbean.
He pants around the bedroom until I open my walk in closet and that’s where he hides with his head in the corner.
80lbs of shaking mutt, I send the kids in with him if it’s a daytime storm, and they play board games with him…

Oh, thank you for this. There must have been a reason why that avenue hasn't been explored yet! I had this vision of an online order then gifting the coat to my inlaws with a resulting guaranteed less anxious dog. I'll suggest to them to look for a behaviourist first!
HarrisMcCoo · 25/07/2021 19:27

No. Ww3 could break out and she would sleep through it all.

LoveFall · 25/07/2021 19:46

Current dog is not afraid of thunder but does want extra cuddles. Previous dog was terrified of thunder, fireworks, and even the sound of Seadoos on a lake.

She would shake like crazy, and go and hide in our closet. Poor thing. She was inconsolable.

Cluckycluck · 25/07/2021 19:49

Nope but it is pretty much the only thing my dog isn't afraid of.

You can't cough in our house without our dog absolutely losing her mind with fear.

Honeyroar · 25/07/2021 20:25

My Romanian street dog is terrified of thunder and fireworks. My lab doesn’t even notice it. My previous lab actively adored fireworks.

TobyHouseMan · 27/07/2021 14:12

Yes! Strange as its absolutly fine going shooting and sitting next to a 12-bore going off, but thunder or a firework and its petrified!

pigsDOfly · 27/07/2021 15:57

Yes, and fireworks.

She was fine when she was younger but as she's got older, she's 10 years old now, she's become fearful of the noise and even gets a bit nervous when it rains heavily; I suspect she's waiting for the thunder to start.

I really first noticed it during the fireworks in 2019.

She will come and find me and we sit and cuddle while it's going on. Once it stops she'll gradually realise it's gone quiet and will move away.

She's also terrified of flies.

wetotter · 27/07/2021 17:43

Mercifully not

But if it gets very loud, she likes to be close to a human (ideally me) and she has the 'is this OK mum?' look on her face and is fine when reassured.

BiteyShark · 27/07/2021 17:50

Yes and toasters, sneezing, bangs, hoovers, the mop, phones. The list goes on Grin. As a puppy and young dog he was fearless but not now Hmm
