My Romanian street dogs hates fireworks (not sure why, he was fine for years - but I think the Brexit ones tipped him over the edge) - but thunder/the tube/lorries/motorbikes etc he doesn't bat an eyelid.

Girlintheframe · 28/07/2021 07:53

Thunder no, not fussed at all. Same with fireworks however feathers and plastic bags, well that's a whole other story 🤦🏻‍♀️

StormingNotNorming · 28/07/2021 16:27

Nope. He's scared of many things, but not thunder.

Probably because I ask Alexa to play thunderstorm noises everynight to send me (and him) to sleep. I suspect the sound of thunder is comforting to him by now Grin

Greydog · 28/07/2021 16:57

I've had the most dreadful afternoon with our grey - a couple of rolls of thunder, and she's been hysterical - she's been panting now for hours, but the thunder came to very little. She is scared of almost everything, and nothing seems to work. She has been taking the Dorwest Calm tablets, and they have helped her everyday anxiety, but this is now a whole new level, and I really don't know what to do. I'm afraid she'll give herself a heart attack or something

blahblahblah321 · 28/07/2021 17:03

Nope, thunder/fireworks etc absolutely fine.

Walk her by someone carrying an umbrella, flying a kite or having their hood up - and she runs like the wind ConfusedGrin

Nohomemadecandles · 28/07/2021 17:05

Used to be. Trembling, pacing, panting. He could tell a storm was brewing well before it arrived.
Weirdly, he had some teeth out a few years ago and it seemed to completely cure him!

Sitdowncupoftea · 28/07/2021 17:08

No I live rural so they are use to crow scarers , gunshots etc.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/07/2021 17:15

Isn't bothered about thunder or fireworks. Quite scared of someone popping bubble wrap though. Hmm

SirenSays · 28/07/2021 18:47

Mine isn't thankfully. One of my regular housesits has an outdoor dog who is terrified of thunder, its the only time he comes inside the house. I stick his blanket down for him, pop his thunder jacket on and play Dog TV. Thankfully he soon settles and goes to sleep.

awkwardusername · 28/07/2021 18:50

We live near a train line so ours thinks it’s just a very loud train!
She is inexplicably terrified of hanging baskets however…

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/07/2021 18:56

Nope, utterly bomb proof!

itsnotmeitsu · 29/07/2021 00:24

@Cluckycluck > "Nope but it is pretty much the only thing my dog isn't afraid of. You can't cough in our house without our dog absolutely losing her mind with fear"

Is your dog a rescue? Our adopted elderly ex-racer has not shown any sign of being troubled by the thunderstorm that was scaring me today, but aside from that that he's the same as yours. Good luck getting him out of the house for a wee if he hears someone talking outside. That Greyhound leap in the air if somebody farts would be funny if you didn't know the dog was scared, and thus the owner is stressed. [By the way, I don't fart.]

itsnotmeitsu · 29/07/2021 00:33

Oh @ Greydog > Just seen your post. I know it's really scary, and I how much you worry. Although our current rescue doesn't seem to be bothered about thunderstorms, he is terrified of absolutely everything else.

However, our three previous rescues have always been scared out of their wits during thunderstorms. I also had the fear that the panic would cause a heart attack. It never did. We have what was probably previously a larder where our washer/dryer is. With the boy we had before the current one, if I knew a storm was due, I'd save up the washing. I'd then put his rug in that space and put the washing; then the dryer on. He'd go in there and it certainly helped to some extent. Small space, warmth, and noise of machine.

LemonRoses · 29/07/2021 00:49

Not at all. Opens one eye, sees she’s not needed to work or set. Sleeps again.
Daughters cocker wakes and bounces around excitedly looking for the guns.
Our Dalmatian used to quiver and shake and hide inside beds, if he could get away with it. Real wuss.

Cluckycluck · 29/07/2021 05:20

@itsnotmeitsu

No, my dog isn't a rescue. We've had her since a pup but she just happens to be scared of most things. She's always been the same way. Thankfully she is very easy to calm down when she is scared.

Spidey66 · 29/07/2021 12:17

Mine doesnt appear bothered by either thunder or fireworks. We used to have a cat who was similarly unbothered.

FrenchyQ · 29/07/2021 12:23

My Romanian dog is, doesn't really like any loud noises. My other dog isn't bothered

imnottoofussed · 29/07/2021 12:27

Mine is not scared of it at all, with fireworks he will occasionally bark if he is in the garden and one goes off but otherwise he pays no attention.

Greydog · 29/07/2021 13:06

itsnotme - thanks for that! I did end up going to the vets with her, as I was so worried! I was glad I did, as vet did a really good check on her, and pointed out a couple of old racing injuries - one I was aware of, due to the scar on her shoulder - but not the other to her back leg, which explains why she won't jump up onto things, but scrambles up in the most undignified way! All calm today!
