Am I getting my puppy too late?

I'm picking my puppy at ten weeks old. Is that ok? Should I get him sooner? Keep being told by people that I should get him sooner, what's the best thing to do?
Arranged this date and was quite happy, breeder is taking him for all his jabs first.

It's like having a baby isn't it, everyone has an opinion!

What is the breed? Small breeds often stay with mum till they are 12 weeks. 10 weeks isn’t too late at all, it’s just common for pups to go at 8 or 9 weeks.

mayblossominapril · 23/07/2021 22:32

We didn’t get one until she was 14 weeks, she was the last one left! It was fine and she was such a loyal dog, we were definitely her pack.

Northernsoullover · 23/07/2021 22:32

My partner got his at 9 weeks. I can't see it making much difference. I am no expert though.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 23/07/2021 22:33

Lots of people say they benefit from being with their mum and siblings for a couple of extra weeks. I don’t think it’s a bad thing as long as the breeder socialises them.

nimbuscloud · 23/07/2021 22:34

Ours was 13 weeks
She was fully weaned and really benefited from the socialisation with her mother and litter mates.

OnlyToWin · 23/07/2021 22:34

We got ours at almost 11 weeks. It was the right decision for us. He was so easy to house train, slept brilliantly and we only were housebound for one week.

Cheerstoyou · 23/07/2021 22:35

It’s actually a better age to get a puppy because they need to learn bite inhibition from their litter mates and mum. You will obviously have to continue the training but I think it’s a good thing.

It's a shitzu

Thank you, that really is all very reassuring.

Ours was 12 weeks.

He arrived pretty much housetrained (he had less than 10 accidents indoors) and excellently socialised.

It'll be absolutely fine Smile

I picked my pup up yesterday a day shy of 10 weeks. Most of the litter went at 8 but we couldn’t go any earlier. It worked out for the best with him being the last pup to go as he got more socialisation, has learned to settle himself, more 121 training for toileting and car journeys. He’s such a sweetheart and so well behaved so far. I wouldn’t change how it happened for us.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 24/07/2021 05:48

A Shih Tzu will benefit from the extra weeks with its mother. Your puppy will bond with you and your family just fine -- and maybe even better for the extra one-to-one with its mama.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/07/2021 09:38

We collected our terrier puppy at about 11 weeks. She settled in quickly, house-trained easily, and was a fab dog for 15 years.

fufulina · 24/07/2021 17:25

We collected our shih tzu at 10 weeks - the breeder wanted to give him all his jabs. He was a dream to toilet train, and in retrospect it was a good age for us to get him. He would have been tiny at 8 weeks.

cheeseisthebest · 24/07/2021 21:50

Thank you, feel much happier now!
Fufulina tell me more about the toilet training? I'm quite nervous about it!

Huge difference between 8-10/12 weeks. Our last pup (an Irish setter) was 12 weeks and an absolute dream, calm, non-bitey, house trained and just soooo much easier than an 8 week old.

So 10 weeks is better than 8? But not as good as 12?

If you can wait until 12 weeks I'd recommend it, assuming he will stay with his mum until then. 10 weeks is fine, eight is...a challenge!

Red at 12 weeks [heart]

Ours was 12 weeks and it’s better for the socialisation they get from mum and siblings.

cheeseisthebest · 24/07/2021 22:52

No we can't wait any longer than 10 for variety of reasons but hopefully 10 better than 8!
Red is beautiful!

We got H at 10 weeks and it was absolutely fine, added bonus that he'd had both sets of jabs. We got B at 8 weeks and haven't really noticed much difference :)

wetotter · 26/07/2021 10:25

Mine came home to us at 12 weeks

The extra time with their mother and siblings is beneficial, and (assuming good breeder) more socialisation and early training will have been done.

Also, the course of jabs will be completed, which means your puppy can go out with feet on the floor from the off. Nicer all round, I think

Maxiedog123 · 26/07/2021 10:43

Got both of my border collie puppies at 10 weeks, both well socialised with breeders other dogs, and best of all their mums had already toilet trained them.

Mantlemoose · 26/07/2021 15:34

10-12 weeks is perfect, much better for pup.

cheeseisthebest · 26/07/2021 22:57

Thank you. Oh getting quite nervous about it all now!!
