Rehoming puppy

Franks55 · 13/07/2021 06:54

Further to my post on the weekend, I’ve been trying to rectify what I feel is the biggest mistake of my life.
My puppy is ten weeks. How do I go about rehoming? The breeder (hobby breeder) wasn’t helpful.
And yes. I know I’m a bad person.

I've just read your last thread. It's very clear you have major anxiety problems. As you said yourself when you read the thread back.

I don't know what can be done for your poor wee puppy, I'm sure other posters will be along soon to advise. But the sooner he gets rehomed the better.

But this is a major wake up call for you. You can't live like this and let your son learn by example.

Get some counselling.

Good luck OP

Hi OP, why is it that you feel it’s such a big mistake? Ten weeks is SUCH a difficult stage, they don’t sleep through the night and they poop everywhere. I didn’t find it fun or cute at all, I called my mum in tears thinking I’d ruined my life. My dog is so much easier now she can be walked, left overnight alone, doesn’t poop inside and she’s 16 weeks. Basically, it will get better faster than you think.

If you’re completely set on rehoming doing it right now will be best for your puppy. Go to dogs trust and they will match an owner up for you. Give your closest one a ring and tell them what’s going on, they might even be able to help.

Thank you. I actually have spoken to GP and have a plan in place. The puppy was the icing on the cake. I feel like I’m having a mini breakdown x

Has the puppy actually arrived? Or is the breeder asking you to find a new home?

Franks55 · 13/07/2021 07:37

Puppy is here.

Get in touch with a reputable dog charity such as dogs trust etc. At 10 weeks they’ll have no problem finding him a good home. Please don’t advertise him yourself or sell him on. He deserves the best chance of a permanent good home

Haven’t read your last thread but I think it sounds like reigning is the right way forward.

SnarkyBag · 13/07/2021 07:38

**rehoming

HeavenHotel · 13/07/2021 07:40

I'm glad you're getting the support you need. Yes the last thing you need is a puppy right now.

Although you will probably get pressure from your family not to rehome, it sounds like it's best for you all.

As PP said a reputable charity will have no problem rehoming a puppy.

ikeepseeingit · 13/07/2021 07:42

Just read that you think you’re having a breakdown. OP the puppy will be okay if you hand it over to dogs trust. It’s so so young and will fit into another family very well at this age. Put your oxygen mask on first. No shame in doing the right thing for you all. Please try not to feel guilty xx

SnarkyBag · 13/07/2021 07:47

Just also say we got our pup at 10 weeks old from the rspca (well 13 weeks by the time they’d done all the checks etc) he popped up on the rspca Facebook page and I happened to see it straight away and messaged to be told they only take the first two applications initially so to be quick (like do it in the next 5 minutes or you won’t even be considered!) they get so many applications for puppies they don’t have time to vet them all so start only with the first two.

Random789 · 13/07/2021 07:59

JUst echoing other posters' reassurance that it will be straightforward to rehome a puppy that is so young. Proveded you hand it over to a reputable rehoming organisation then you will have done it no harm and you shouldn't torment yourself about it .

So much pressure is taken out of the situation if you fully recognise this. You can take a breath, relax as far as possible, and see that there is a way forward for you that you don't have to feel bad about.

Franks55 · 13/07/2021 08:01

You are all lovely. Thank you. I can’t breathe at the moment so the analogy of putting on your own oxygen mask is particularly useful.

I’ve just read your previous thread. You really should’ve cancelled getting the puppy. But as others have said a reputable animal charity will make sure he goes to the right home. The breeder should take him back really, any responsible breeder would. Please don’t consider getting a dog again until you’ve had some serious help with your anxiety

Passingahat · 13/07/2021 08:12

I foster dogs for rehoming.
There should be much less stigma about rehoming dogs, and in some cases people should do it far easier. Often people wait far too long and the situation gets worse for the dog. People often hold out till the last possible moment and often by that point the dog has picked up negative behaviours eg its not been socialised well, wait till its bit the kid, bit another dog.

Its far easier if people recognise they can't cope and rehome a puppy, or the dog earlier then a dog thats begun to develop traits that make it less adoptable

I once had a foster dog who broke the families heart to give away. He was lovely but just too bouncy and high energy and they had tried a lot but he wasn't getting walked much as they couldn't control him. The family were absolutely devastated but made a 100% the right decision. He was adopted by a high energy house hold and is now a flyball champ. Im sure that push come to shove they could have made do
but in acknowledging they weren't the right home they allowed him such a better life.

There really are some fantastic homes out there waiting for a pup

Rehoming as a pup means any local charity should be able to match him to a home fairly quickly. Check your local charities but mine for example can home straight into foster then adopt so their is no kennel time, others allow people to foster to adopt

Franks55 · 13/07/2021 08:14

Yes I know.

Wolfiefan · 13/07/2021 08:16

Is it a specific breed? There are breed specific rescues who can help OP. Can anyone help you out until it’s able to go to foster or into a rescue?

Partey · 13/07/2021 08:18

Roughly where are you OP?

Agree with other posters, you must look after yourself first.

QuentinBunbury · 13/07/2021 08:19

Oh poor you
Personally I don't think you should rehome. 10 weeks is hard and it does feel intense. But as others have said it passes so quickly and the dog will help with your anxiety.
How old is your son? Can he help?
Can you focus on puppy training? Sit/paw? Take them out for a lookat the scenery?

Personally I think if you stick with it in 6 weeks you'll be proud and that will help with the anxiety. If you rehome now you have given in.

Just my 2p - I totally hated having a puppy for the first week but I adore him now and he's been so good for my mental health (he's 1)

QuentinBunbury · 13/07/2021 08:23

Maybe post on here for some day to day support?

coldwarenigma · 13/07/2021 08:26

Our last 2 dogs have both been puppies from the RSPCA. A puppy will be easy for them to rehome. Please, please do not advertise on gumtree etc..Good luck with your health, it sounds like you are doing all the right things. A puppy is bloody hard work!

bunnygeek · 13/07/2021 08:46

A puppy in a rescue, provided it passes all the health checks, will be rehomed within a week

Partey · 13/07/2021 08:48

@Franks55 I have a poodle mix and am actively looking for a rescue.

I’m home full time and when I’m not my mum comes to dog sit(she loves to).

If you are local I’d be happy to talk about either rehoming or even fostering? For a month or 2, or longer depending on how you are. I’d be happy to let you speak to my vet and groomer etc, and come meet us to reassure you

Franks55 · 13/07/2021 09:41

Where are you based?

OP posts:
Partey · 13/07/2021 09:53

I’m in the North East
