Labrador pup, girl or boy?

BaconAndAvocado · 04/07/2021 10:31

Just had news from the breeders that a litter has been born with our puppy in it!!

Very very excited! We were told it would take up to a year so am pleasantly surprised it's happened earlier.

The litter are all brown.

Are there any character traits in girls or boys or are they all completely different?

DH had a collie growing up but I've never had a dog so lots to learn.

Bitch for sure, likely to be sweeter and more polite.

covidandborisandworld · 04/07/2021 18:07

I have a male cross lab. He hasn't started cocking yet I will get him neutered in about 6 months.

He is very friendly with all people and other dogs. He is scared of our cats. They are in charge.

I have friends with bitches and they are much more neurotic I find.

Inagalaxyfaraway · 04/07/2021 18:09

Definitely bitch for me I think they are calmer and easier to train. However any Labrador is just gorgeous anyway.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/07/2021 20:19

@PollyRoulson

We will need photos but they should look like wobbling guinea pigs at 4 weeks Smile

What about names, do you have good boys names or good girls names?

Will post pics!

Re names, top boy names atm are: Freddy and Billy
Too girl names are: Rosie and Polly.
Seem to have less inspiration with girl names.

Girls can be smaller but our boy as you can see is smallish and around 8 kg (he was weighed last Monday)

Thank you. He's a little monkey too 😀

We went for a boy, as we’d had boys when I was a child. He’s got a lovely nature, but at 8 months, although a slim working type, he is very strong. His sisters are less strong and slighter. This is worth considering if you’ll have children keen to help with walks. That having been said, our’s is a gorgeous, friendly lad and we wouldn’t swap him ( despite his food-stealing ways…)

😆 ignore the random Legoland photo, no idea how that ended up there!

DinosaurDiana · 04/07/2021 21:09

I’ve always had bitches.

Frezia · 04/07/2021 21:20

We had a girl labrador and she was the sweetest dog; I'd get a girl again I think.

Derbee · 05/07/2021 01:21

I would always have a male. Find them much more biddable and easy to train.

BaconAndAvocado · 05/07/2021 11:47

We're going for a boy! Will be Billy or Freddy I think.

Going to view the pups at the end of the month.

Thanks crunched Feelings of excitement are now turning to nerves!!

Although I've brought up 3 DCs, this feels like it's going to be harder 😂

We have a 7 year old female lab and has the best temperament. We had her spayed after her 2and season as we had no intention of breeding from her. I think the trick is to train them early, monitor what they eat as they will eat everything and anything!! We have 4 kids (aged 3 to 11) and she is very patient with them (although still needs constant supervision as you just never know). She is small, about 22kg, compared to alot of the male labs I have encountered. I'm sure no matter what sex of dog you get, if u train them well they will be a great companion for you ! Enjoy!!

Medievalist · 05/07/2021 14:57

Good choice op - getting a Labrador I mean. Both sexes are fabulous.

You're definitely in for a shock though! Puppies are much harder work than babies as babies stay wherever you put them and wear nappies. Puppies do neither!

We took on an unwanted 12 week old Labrador a couple of years ago and for the first couple of weeks I slept downstairs with him in a basket next to me so every time he woke I could rush him into the garden for a wee. It was hard work but got him housetrained really quickly!

I'd forgotten how demanding small puppies are though as most of our dogs for a long while have been older rescues. Puppies exhausting! But SO gorgeous.

Medievalist I’m expecting the worst then anything else will be a bonus!

I think the sleepless nights scare me the most having been baby-free for 10 years 😂

The sleepless nights are over so quickly. As is the housetraining, biting, etc. Our puppy was pretty intense for a few months, but he is the most laid back placid 8 month old now. Hes been an absolute joy from the moment we met him. You’ll have such fun

That sounds encouraging Derbee The vet is visiting the breeders today to confirm the sexes.

Wondering if it's a good idea to take a blanket with us when we first meet him so he has our smell to get used to.
Has anyone else done this?

OP posts:
Quickchangeartiste · 06/07/2021 12:13

Better to leave the blanket with breeder so when you pick him up it smells of the litter.
Picked our boy at 4 weeks and spent some time playing with him and letting him sleep on us.
When we went to collect him he came straight to us, he remembered our scent
Fabulous dogs. I have 2 🥰
