Puppy with amputated leg..

Dramatic title I know but I would like any tips and advice to help us give our new rescue puppy the best care we can..
After losing our wonderful Springer Boy in September we have been put top of the list to rehome a little Cavapoo who was born without a paw on her back leg. It was decided by the vet to amputate at the hip. She is doing amazingly well.. She's 11 weeks and as soon as she is discharged from the vets I hope she will be ours...
We know that we must be careful about weight gain so as not to stress her remaining leg, but is there any other tips.. We are actually already involved in her care and have had her for days and a few over nights.. I have been shown exercises and muscle massage..
Any tips gratefully received.. I expect you'd all love a photo?

No advice but she’s incredibly cute . I know a couple of amputee dogs and they seem to cope really well .

tealappeal · 30/06/2021 21:25

No tips for you, I'm afraid - just wanted to say that she is adorable!

Marylou62 · 30/06/2021 21:33

Thank you very much.. I'm busting with pride.. After losing our Springer we said never again but along she came..

Amputee dogs do amazingly well - I heard of a working springer that lost a leg but carried on working, and I know and have known a lot of tripods, all of them a tube, happy and well-adjusted. We are regularly caught up with when walking by one who dashes up to our dogs to play.

It sounds as if she'll have a great life with you.

*a tube? I meant active!

TheSandgroper · 01/07/2021 12:30

I have had passing acquaintance with a Border terrier/ possibly Jack cross who has had one rear leg amputated. Still speedy, still turns on a dime. Etc, etc. I think the single leg has angled itself more to the centre a bit.

Thank you everyone.. We went out for the day with both puppies.. They were the centre of attention and both loved all the strokes.. We are lucky that we (hopefully) have been able to rehome her and will give her the life she deserves... Both puppies have had a little tussle/play fight and are now asleep... Bliss

OP, I think you need to give her up immediately...and give her to me!! How adorable is she?! Sounds like you've done your research and that she'll have a wonderful life with your family 🥰 Sorry, nothing of any actual use to say!

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 01/07/2021 18:42

Superset could have added a foot , shame he wasn't around when they decided to take off his whole leg!

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 01/07/2021 18:42

Having said that though they do very well without a leg . Animals are survivors !

ApolloandDaphne · 01/07/2021 18:44

We had a three legged retriever live near us and he ran about the fields as fast as any four legged dog! He was joyous to watch.

Reallyreallyborednow · 01/07/2021 18:48

Are you sure there’s no yorkie in there?! That is a proper Yorkshire ‘tache Grin

3 legged dogs cope fine. Mine had a dislocated patella and still prefers to use three legs out of choice, despite having a completely successful repair and being able to use it fine for jumping on the sofa or sprinting after a ball…

SupermanInk · 01/07/2021 18:52

Too cute...as is the photo bomber. 😂
It sounds like she’s going to be very loved with you OP.

HandsSpaceArse · 01/07/2021 18:55

How wonderful! Was her leg without the paw shorter? Was it just fur?

I hope she has an amazing life with you and her puppy pal.

Marylou62 · 01/07/2021 22:15

Thanks everyone.. Yes. No paw.. She was trying to put weight on the leg but because it was shorter she tripped and stumbled.. She also developed sores..
I'm afraid Supervet would have charged (rightly) £10,000..the small charity who rescued her could never afford that.. And to be honest if we'd had to make the choice I wouldn't have put her through that.. It's usually reserved for animals who have lost 2 paws... Daughters puppy has just gone home and she's curled up with my DH.. hopefully her Dad.. My daughter is taking out her stitches over the weekend and she will be having her checkup on Monday... Then hopefully we will be able to officially adopt her... Please everyone keep your fingers crossed for us... X

We really don't know for sure but have been told Cavapoo... Never saw the mum, neither did the rescue charity..

Will keep every thing crossed. Please keep us updated if you have time, I’d love to hear how she gets on. She’s a beauty. ❤️

Marylou62 · 01/07/2021 22:21

She's gorgeous! No proper advice but there's a three legged collie in my village who I often see on walks and seems to be able to outpace some of the other dogs - I'm not entirely convinced she knows she ever had a fourth leg Grin amazing animals and yours is definitely the right size for cuddles - crossing fingers for Monday for you.

Mogloveseggs · 01/07/2021 22:27

How cute! Fingers crossed for you

Marylou62 · 01/07/2021 22:28

Don't worry.. I'll be so happy I'll cry out.. Listen for shouting from Cornwall! I'll definitely let you know..
