Puppy with amputated leg..

Dramatic title I know but I would like any tips and advice to help us give our new rescue puppy the best care we can..
After losing our wonderful Springer Boy in September we have been put top of the list to rehome a little Cavapoo who was born without a paw on her back leg. It was decided by the vet to amputate at the hip. She is doing amazingly well.. She's 11 weeks and as soon as she is discharged from the vets I hope she will be ours...
We know that we must be careful about weight gain so as not to stress her remaining leg, but is there any other tips.. We are actually already involved in her care and have had her for days and a few over nights.. I have been shown exercises and muscle massage..
Any tips gratefully received.. I expect you'd all love a photo?

How adorable! My friends had to have their dog's front leg amputated when he was 9 because he had cancer. He recovered surprisingly quickly. He learned to manage without it and was happily running up and down the stairs within a couple of months. He lived another 6 years after the op. He was a bearded collie so quite a bit bigger!

😍🥰😍 she’s utterly gorgeous, all fingers and toes crossed for you being her new family, she’ll have a wonderful life with you!

A few local amputee/3 limbed dogs here- one has an unformed front leg, others have lost a back/front leg for various reasons. They don’t know they’re any different and they don’t care!

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2021 22:48

DM has a 14 year old lab who had her front right leg amputated at the hip when she was 5. She adapted well, and very quickly. Her amputation has literally never held her back. She continued to walk miles, chase balls and sticks, swim and scramble out of rivers, keep up with her 4-years-younger sister, jump in and out of cars etc for years. It’s only in the last 12-18 months that she has slowed down, but then she is 14! She can’t walk as far as she once could, and now struggles with stairs, but again, this is age related as much as anything else.

I remember in the sheep dog trialling championships many years ago there was a guy whose champion dog got caught on barbed wire and lost a leg. He was so upset that he couldn't bear to work with the dog anymore, and he got a new dog. His girlfriend took over training with the amputee dog. This was back when few women did sheepdog trials and they weren't respected - it was a man's world. Anyway, they both entered the championships and she won! The joke was that this guy had not only been beaten by a woman but a woman with a three-legged dog! The girlfriend became well known. Her name was Katy Cropper.

That is a wonderful story @annacondom

My boy has a poorly paw but runs (if we let him) at full pelt on 3! There's a German shepherd with 3 legs, manages just fine

HoppingPavlova · 02/07/2021 12:18

I spent my youth surrounded by dogs with 3 legs and they all did just fine. Back then dogs weren’t confined to peoples yards but roamed the neighbourhood and lots liked to chase cars unfortunately, probably because many had Kelpie mixed in. Obviously they came off second best and amputations were very common. Didn’t seem to impair them or slow them down any.

The advantage with yours is also that she won’t have really known any different. Looks like she has a fantastic home.

And I hope you don't mind but a photo of our beloved Springer boy Kenny.. She has big shoes to fill! (that's a bit of a joke as they couldn't be more different . Kenny was a bit of a baby where she's a feisty little thing.. She will be loved for herself)

@Marylou62

Just another photo to show her off!
Oh that wee face! She looks naughty.
ArcherDog · 02/07/2021 17:09

I would start researching joint supplements now, as inevitably she will develop problems with her remaining leg, and potentially arthritis.
Not necessarily medication at this point but omega-3 from fish, turmeric etc

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/07/2021 21:42

She definitely looks a bit like a yorkie puppy?! Maybe a yorkiepoo? Her colouring and ears are Yorkshire terrier....

She's so cute, I'm very jealous!!

Marylou62 · 03/07/2021 20:13

Thanks again everyone..
Yes.. I agree with omega suppliments.. I will investigate..
Girlie.. I see Yorkie too but DD says that rescuer definitely said cavapoo... X

I had deleted this post as it appeared o on trending and was worried about outing.. But it popped up so I thought I'd let you all know that she became ours after a nerve wracking week of waiting... She's amazing and so happy.. She's bouncy and squeeks! It was the anniversary of Kennys death on Saturday and having her helped us a lot... Still tears but lots of beach walks and cuddles took our mind off the sad day... One more photo...

We have a cavapoo and she definitely looks like one to me. They are the most loving little dogs. Good luck with it all.

She looks so, so Yorkshire terrier.
The small size suggests yorkie aswell.
She is lovely but looks nothing like any Cavapoo I’ve ever seen.
Which tbf, considering the horrendous health problems of Cavaliers is probably a good thing!

You might be right but funnily enough on the beach today I came across another cavapoo who looked very similar..Almost same age too.. She's also 4.5kg now with very long legs...
