My lawn is wrecked! Any ideas?

There are brown burnt patches and also very green patches. From our dog’s urine I expect.

Any suggestions as to how I can remedy this please?

Train them to wee in a specific area and then water the area regularly.

Some people swear by dog rocks

Baycitystroller · 09/06/2021 21:52

I’m not sure I’ll manage the training! Dog rocks….off to search them up

God, my garden used to be beautiful....... now it's full of dead plants that have been pissed on. Such a shame.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/06/2021 22:06

Can you section it off? We have grass and decking etc at the back and yard for the ddogs at the forefront.. Fence in between..

Baycitystroller · 09/06/2021 22:17

Hmmm not sure. I need a miracle cure!

We had to section ours in half in the end. The dog half is patio and the other half lawn.

We tried everything but nothing worked!

Medusastill · 09/06/2021 23:40

I stopped using the garden as a dog loo!
Mine never poos in the garden but used to have her last wee before bed out there and the grass was dying. So now I pop out at 11pm just to the nearest patch of green near us and she does it there! And we get up and out in the morning and afternoon for long walks (or the dog walker takes her if I'm working) If she needs a wee half way through the afternoon we just pop out again to the green!

Then reseeded the lawn!

BiteyShark · 10/06/2021 06:42

I use a watering can on the area straight after my dog has peeded which dilutes the pee and stops the grass from being killed.

The pees I don't spot obviously result in burnt patches. The only way I find to remedy this is to rake out the dead grass, reseed and then water daily until the grass starts to grow which is usually around 3-4 weeks.

It's a constant battle with the lawn.

Balaur · 10/06/2021 06:55

Yep I use the "drench area with a watering can" approach too. Even then you inevitably miss some patches. These then have to be reseeded, once the grass is brown/yellow there's no return. It is indeed a sisyphean task trying to maintain a lawn when you have a dog. Also tried the dog rocks but my dog drinks a lot from streams etc on walks so it didn't really work.

Baycitystroller · 10/06/2021 06:57

Thanks all. Going try the watering can.

Sorry to hijack, but do any of you have any experience of them rebelling and deliberately not going where you want them to go? Puppy we brought home on Saturday has decided to go anywhere BUT!

Pinchoftums · 10/06/2021 08:14

We never let them use the garden and take them out for a walk and use the road/scrubland down the road.

legotruck · 10/06/2021 08:24

This. It's the only way.

BiteyShark · 10/06/2021 08:38

I couldn't stop mine from toileting in the garden. He doesn't poo at set times and has had numerous upset stomachs in the past. If I took mine out on the road for toileting I would need to be out there all the time Grin

I just try and maintain the lawn each year as best I can.

Does he pee on your plants? The grass is fine in my garden, it's the poor plants that have taken a battering 🙈

BiteyShark · 10/06/2021 09:06

Ah no he doesn't pee on plants because he pees like a girl dog and always has. He is 5 soon and still squats instead of cocking his leg Grin

He is not rebelling just prefers a different area. What is different about the area he likes? Different plants, surfact texture, more or less secluded .

Maybe he needs to walk about more then wee so start off in the area you dont want him to wee and then move to the wee area.

Can you move the wee area to where he wants to wee? One less battle to fight Smile

ILikePizzaAndWine · 10/06/2021 09:29

Thanks @PollyRoulson - I’ve just been to check, and it’s not much difference, just further up the garden. I think she thinks it’s a game or it’s toddler on naughty step type thing as she looks over her shoulder and runs away. I’ll see if there’s a pattern when she goes next time!

HarrisMcCoo · 10/06/2021 11:27

I have a St Bernard so she has wrecked the garden. Huge brown patches, but we don't really mind as it was rubbish to begin with. No suggestions, but you have my sympathies.

XiCi · 10/06/2021 15:48

I was recommended the dog rocks you put on their water bowl. Think ill try those as have a few brown patches now

Baycitystroller · 10/06/2021 15:58

I’m going to see if I can fence off an area for her to use as a toilet!

Will dogs wee on concrete? We're getting a greyhound soon , so the grass may be wrecked anyway, but I was going to try and do 3x walks a day plus hire a field at least once a week so that might minimise how much zooming there is outside. We have a large driveway to the side but within the fenced area, would it be worth trying to persuade weeing there? Doesn't it get v smelly ?

tootyfruitypickle · 10/06/2021 18:46

Or put some earth in the corner of the drive for weeing purposes ?!! Any chance ?

Arrowheart · 10/06/2021 18:48

Dog rocks didn't make any difference to my dog

BiteyShark · 10/06/2021 18:53

@Arrowheart

Dog rocks didn't make any difference to my dog
My understanding is that if your dog drinks from any other water source it won't work. Given that mine adores any swampy puddles over his water bowl I didn't bother trying Grin
