My lawn is wrecked! Any ideas?

There are brown burnt patches and also very green patches. From our dog’s urine I expect.

Any suggestions as to how I can remedy this please?

@tootyfruitypickle

Will dogs wee on concrete? We're getting a greyhound soon , so the grass may be wrecked anyway, but I was going to try and do 3x walks a day plus hire a field at least once a week so that might minimise how much zooming there is outside. We have a large driveway to the side but within the fenced area, would it be worth trying to persuade weeing there? Doesn't it get v smelly ?

Bitch or dog? Hounds can be fussy buggers when it comes to toileting, hopefully you'll get one that will go anywhere. If I were you, I'd make the most of your garden while you can because it won't be like that for much longer 😉

Helenluvsrob · 11/06/2021 09:14

We had this. Now he’s nearly 2 it’s remedied itself.
He still does wee in the garden but much less preferring to go on walks etc. Also he seems to wee on the bushes not the grass some of the time.

Perching · 11/06/2021 09:32

There isn’t much you can do sadly except for dilute with a bucket or water can as soon as possible. This is my one regret - that I didn’t train my dog tot toilet in one area.
In the end I bought some cheap picket fencing from b&q, semi enclosed a small area think it was about 1.5x1.5 m and filled it deeply with bark chips. Trained my dog with high value treats to go there and I hose it down and turn it over with a garden fork every now and then. Good luck!

Baycitystroller · 11/06/2021 09:59

Thanks for the ideas all.

Best solution I have found is to fence a section off and put bark chip down. That way it doesn't look a mess but also doesn't smell. When they do go on the lawn I water it in well (like a watering cans worth of water) which helps!

3ormoredogs · 11/06/2021 21:33

Do the bark chips not soak up the wee and stink?

I’ve got mud currently but bark chips would look much better if they don’t stink!

Perching · 12/06/2021 03:44

Mine doesn’t but I do hose it down every now and again and also turn it over with a garden fork. It’s like an orderly compost heap haha, I only have one dog though.

Spyro1234 · 12/06/2021 03:58

I don't let my dog use the garden as a toilet at all. We always pop.over the road for first/last wees of the day

languagelover96 · 12/06/2021 12:48

I take Milo to the park to do his business.

hennaoj · 12/06/2021 15:45

How old is your dog? Mine was completely burnt and non existant until we kept our dog off it. After he was about 8 months old he stopped flooding the garden when he wee'd it was safe to let him back on it

What about the week's in between?

AlwaysLatte · 13/06/2021 18:17

My husband has banned the dog from the main lawn because of yellow patches! He fenced it off and the dog still has a lot of space as it's a big garden - depending on the size it might be worth thinking about that, even if it ends up being a small lawn?

PurpleMustang · 13/06/2021 18:20

Can I ask those that say they have fenced off the garden and patio, what have you used to do it? Thinking of doing so, but not sure what to use

gettingalife · 13/06/2021 19:22

Try 'Green-UM Lawn Burn Solution' from Amazon. You put it in the dog's food I think. My friend uses it and says her dog's wee doesn't stain her grass anymore.

FeelinSpendy · 13/06/2021 20:05

I don’t know if this works as I’m just about to start trying it, but someone told me the other day that if you give your dog filtered water the. The brown patches don’t appear. Apparently takes about 3 months to work.

Youarewithme · 13/06/2021 21:28

User the wees inbetween are on walks if the pp does the same as us. I don't let my dog toilet in the garden and in any case lived in a flat with my first dog so it's get up- go for a 5 min toilet trip to the nearest grass, 2x walks a day for 30 mins or so for a toilet/ sniff/ exercise and a wee trip before bed. On weekends the same wee trips but comes with us out and about.

CombatBarbie · 13/06/2021 21:30

Ah you need dog rocks (amazon and eBay and pet suppliers do them) you put them in their water bowl and change them every couple of months. Reduces the acid in the urine but works a treat after our dog trashed the rented property lawn!!

ironclad · 13/06/2021 22:33

@PollyRoulson

Train them to wee in a specific area and then water the area regularly.

Some people swear by dog rocks

The weeing in one area is the best bet, we use a wood chip area.

Dog rocks don't work, my dog drinks out of streams, puddles, other dog bowls and even when he doesn't it didn't work. I've also tried them on a female dog and can't recommend. I've also tried hosing or watering canning the area but it still yellows the grass.

AlwaysLatte · 14/06/2021 00:30

@PurpleMustang my husband put up wooden picket fencing.

3ormoredogs · 14/06/2021 05:43

@PurpleMustang we also used picked fence and ran it along the patio area so it separates the grass and slabs. It’s about 4-5foot tall because my dogs are huge.

Dogs can go to the toilet and lie around on it without getting muddy and DC don’t stand in dog poo.
It does mean the patio needs almost daily cleaning though, we hose and use a little bit of washing up liquid!

userxx · 14/06/2021 07:52

@Youarewithme I thought you'd trained your dog to only wee twice a day!! I was impressed. If I ever have another dog I would follow your pee plan. My old boy needs to go a lot these days and is used to nipping in the garden as and when.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 14/06/2021 08:09

I don’t know if this is coincidence or what but my dog has a protein allergy so can only eat hypoallergenic or fish based food, and his wee… I’m thinking of bottling it and selling it as fertiliser. No scorched plants or grass in the garden, and even on his usual walks around the estate / park you can see where he usually wees as the grass is darker green, thicker and longer Grin

Youarewithme · 14/06/2021 21:51

User my last dog lived to a bloody ripe old age so got a bit elderly for a long time, we luckily had a garden that was sectioned so we put gravel down in a little flowerbed type section and she was easily trained not to go on the grass or concrete path so was allowed in the garden. Then we rehomed a dog who wasn't as trainable, the garden turned into a massive shithole as she wouldn't hold it at all, would just go out whenever for a wee or poo and do it on the grass or paving. We had small kids and it was disgusting so we fenced off the grass for the kids, let her use the paving when desperate (she had a sensitive stomach until we got her food right so if it was 3am and she needed to go, or if kids were in bed and only 1 adult home) but that wasn't ideal for her training. So when we moved it was 100% a no go in the garden, we only have paving now and if she goes in the garden we'd treat it the same as if she went in the house. It's 100% possible to train them not to, as long as they have regular toilet opportunities and you don't let them do it when it's convenient- raining or snowing or if you're unwell etc.
