Norfolk terrier not right

Norfolkquestion · 18/05/2021 22:09

I have a nine month Norfolk terrier bitch and something is up with her. We went out for a pub lunch on Saturday and sat outside - she was on our laps a lot and happy but shivering. I assumed the cold - it was freezing.

On Sunday morning she had an episode of reverse sneezing, then shivered on and off and wasn't herself for the rest of the day. She sounded very snotty.

Monday morning I took her to the vet who said probably kennel cough, it's going around right now. And we did walk past a dog last week that was coughing and its owner said it's got kennel cough.

The vet said if not kennel cough it might be allergies but unlikely as she's young, and failing that she might have something stuck in her nose but also unlikely. She gave me some anti inflammatories to calm her inflamed trachea.

This morning I took her for a (solitary) walk and she had fun chasing squirrels, but slept and sounded snotty all day. Very odd colour, only eating a tiny bit, and hasn't done a poo all day.

Tonight she was sleeping on our bed when she suddenly did this sort of frenzied digging motion, sat up and looked confused, then fell asleep again. She had wet the bed which she never does. I took her to the garden and she just sat there looking dazed. So I've put her to bed but am really worried.

All these days she's been having episodes of reverse sneezing and trembling afterwards.

She is my first dog so I might be being neurotic and she's got a respiratory infection of some sort. But I feel very worried it's worse than that.

I'm seeing the vet tomorrow afternoon again but would love any input as I'm going out of my mind with worry.

Do you have an out of hours vet you can call for advice that way you will know whether you need her seen tonight or if it can wait until tomorrow. We have our first dog too and I knew something wasn't right with her so managed to get to see vet same day and was an ear infection in both ears! We are having a nightmare trying to administer the drops though!

I'd say trust your instincts as it's not normal for her and dogs try not to show they are sick but the strange behaviour is a sign something is up. Hope she is better soon.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 18/05/2021 22:53

Has she had her first season? Some bitches can be very strange the first time. Are you certain she wet the bed? My parents sheepdog was very fastidious about staying clean during her season and would lick herself and her bed until it looked like she had wee'd.

Reverse sneezing and trembling are not necessarily anything to worry about either. My pup is 8 months and he can be very trembly.

I'm not trying to dismiss your concerns. You know your dog and if you say she isn't right I'm sure you're right. I hope everything goes well with the vet tomorrow. They can be such a worry can't they!

We had a gorgeous Norfolk boy for 14 years. Frenzied digging happened daily! He liked to "dig" into rugs, carpets, blankets - I think that is a trait of the breed. Has she been checked for a heart murmur? Our boy had one - and used to sneeze a lot too. He has a long and happy life despite the murmur. I'd go back to the vet and ask if her heart sounds ok.

Norfolkquestion · 19/05/2021 07:28

Thank you all. On Monday the vet said her heart was fine. She just seems so utterly utterly miserable. And the digging came out of the blue - she had been fast asleep and then suddenly did it- I did wonder if it was a seizure.

I'm really hoping it's just a cold and she's feeling very sorry for herself. But she's usually so jolly and full of life and now she's a shadow of her formal self.

I was also wondering about her first season because I too have a nine month old Norfolk terrier and she has just had hers. She was quite out of sorts and not her usual self - subdued and less playful.

Hope you get to the root of the problem. it's a worry when they are poorly .

Norfolkquestion · 19/05/2021 13:03

Hello all,

I have taken her to the vet and she was admitted for blood tests and X rays and intravenous antibiotics with suspected pneumonia and other things not yet specified. Horrendous.

She had her first season a couple of months ago and it lasted about three weeks. I will get her spayed once (if) we get through this awful episode.

Thank you for all input and @thistimelastweek I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl being off colour. Today has shown me that you really should trust your instinct - I thought something was up but people kept telling me to stop fussing and it was just kennel cough.

Today in the vet I just stood there and said I know something is seriously wrong and I want you to help me.

PS they said what she had last night was prob a seizure as she wet herself, which indicates a loss of control.

It's astonishing how much you can love something you've only known nine months. It feels like my child is in hospital. I'm looking at people laughing in the street thinking 'How can you laugh at a time like this?'

Best wishes to you and your little one. Tiny Norfolks are just fab

Aria20 · 19/05/2021 13:55

Well done for trusting your instincts when you knew she wasn't right. Hopefully she's on the mend soon.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 19/05/2021 16:33

Oh my goodness. How horrible. I hope they find a simple cause for the seizure and that she makes a full recovery. Well done for trusting your instincts.

Norfolkquestion · 19/05/2021 17:47

I spoke to the vet and the x ray showed something was up with her lungs, probably early stage pneumonia. She has a very high temp and it's not coming down.

So she's on IV antibiotics, plus paracetamol and anti inflammatories. If her temp is better tomorrow she can come home on antibiotics. If not, they will 'investigate further'. But they don't want to put her under with a GA with such a high temperature.

They say the seizure would have been because she had a high temperature, like a febrile seizure in a baby.

Thank you all for being so nice. I love this tiny scrap more than I'd ever have thought possible and the last few days have been miserable watching her get sadder and sadder.

Norfolkquestion · 21/05/2021 18:28

Hi all, sorry, it's been a tough couple of days but, BUT! I think she is finally looking brighter.

We got her home from the vet yesterday - they gave her a ten day course of antibiotics plus paracetamol and probiotics. It was a bit scary bringing her home as she looked totally wiped out, snot was still pouring from her nose, her breathing sounded not good as she was so congested. She was shivery.

She was like that from yesterday afternoon til this afternoon, but since this afternoon she has just looked a little brighter. She's very tired and has mostly slept but her breathing sounds better, she's managed the odd bark at the Amazon delivery man, and a good bit of tail wagging.

This time yesterday and even this morning I thought she was on the way out, but now I have a good flicker of hope that she might be getting better.

Thank you for asking x
