Another dog just ate (a massive amount) of my dog's poo!

On our morning walk today my 7year old black lab did his usual massive emission on the pavement. So as a responsible dog owner I scooped it up in a baggy and off we went. A few minutes later in a lovely wooded area (no livestock) I let him off lead. We met a man with another black lab off lead and the dogs were friendly and played nicely. Until his dog jumped up and nicked the baggy out of my hand, tore it open and started scoffing the contents ShockConfused I shouted " Leave it" in my best commanding voice which works with my dog but this one carried on munching. The owner was mortified and waved me away shouting "I'll deal with this!" and declining my offer of a fresh baggy. So I left him to clear up the mess. Should I be worried about the other dogs health? Should I have stayed and cleaned up the remnants as it was my dogs poo? Was it my fault? Please tell me some of you see the funny side of this as the other dog owner sure didn't! Blush

This is just grim. And people have these things in their beds with them.

Rhythmisadancer · 14/05/2021 11:31

There is a dog on one of our walks who is devil for this - everyone has to hold any bag they have high in the air as we pass him and watch that he doesn't sneak up behind us and grab it. So gross

AgentProvocateur · 14/05/2021 11:38

This is why I would NEVER get a dog 🤮🤮🤮

wildeverose · 14/05/2021 12:26

And this is why I'm getting a cat 😂

BabyLEphant · 14/05/2021 13:35

Update. I've just met my husband for lunch and he said the same dog has done the same thing with him a few months ago - so this particular lab is known for being a poo stealer! He must have acquired a taste for it. Blurgh!

@Rhythmisadancer maybe we are neighbours!

So is this common then? For dogs to eat poo? Do all dogs eat poo or just some?
Sorry, as a non dog owner, I'm just curious.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/05/2021 13:40

Some dogs do, some don’t.
Some dogs eat dog poo, some eat human.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 14/05/2021 13:43

Dude should have put his dog on the lead after the first time the dog jumped up at you FGS! This was not your fault.

VanCleefArpels · 14/05/2021 13:44

It really is a thing, with a posh medical name and everything. Coprophagia

wagwalking.com/condition/coprophagia

The only upside is that if I pick up all my dog’s poo on a walk, and he eats half a dozen, the woods are net negative of poo which can only be a good thing 😉

VanCleefArpels · 14/05/2021 13:46

Oh and I would add that my family member who is a vet says that in 99% of cases dogs eat shit because it tastes good (to add to the alarming reasons given in the article linked above)

niceupthedance · 14/05/2021 13:49

In lockdown there was a lot of HUMAN poo in the bushes and by trees in local parks - my dog had a field day chomping them all down.

You have to be careful though apparently if the human pooer has been taking drugs it can make the dog poorly

idontlikealdi · 14/05/2021 14:08

You must be feeding your dog something a lot better than the poonsnaffler gets!

Coprophagia I think is it's proper name.

This is just grim. And people have these things in their beds with them.

And let them lick their faces 🤢

And people say dogs are dirty...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/05/2021 15:07

When my DS was a baby he had terrible reflux. We also had cheapo laminate flooring.
You can see where this going can’t you? The dog always managed to get there before I could clean it up. She would sit and wait for it to happen!

ilovesushi · 14/05/2021 16:22

That is hilarious. My puppy seems to love cat poo, fox poo, horse poo and cow poo. Fortunately not gone for any dog poo yet.

Nifflerbowtruckle · 14/05/2021 16:27

My dog has a thing for sheep poo, rabbit poo, horse poo and cow poo. She was also a nightmare eating her own but I can usually get her to stop. Now at the age of 6 she has decided to eat other dogs poo 😡 the one I didn't have to worry about

Charliebradbury · 14/05/2021 16:31

@wildeverose

And this is why I'm getting a cat 😂
Yeah I hate to say it but once my youngest cat threw up and before I had a chance to clean it up the oldest one ate it..... and I've seen cats lick up baby sick as well.
cupsofcoffee · 14/05/2021 16:31

Mine doesn't eat dog poo, but he is partial to a bit of sheep or cat poo - the fresher the better he has been known to eat it straight out of the kittens' bum Grin

I bet the owner wasn't annoyed with you - most likely he was absolutely mortified! Please don't give it a second thought.

cupsofcoffee · 14/05/2021 16:32

@wildeverose

I hate to break it to you, but cats are no better Grin
TimetohittheroadJack · 14/05/2021 16:32

My dog ate its own shit them was sick on my living room carpet 🤢🤢🤢 and tried to eat it again (I have to say it crossed my mind to let him to save me cleaning it).

I now have laminate floor.

Lovemusic33 · 14/05/2021 16:35

I used to have a lab that did this, he would stalk my other dog waiting for her to poop so he could eat it 🤢🤢🤢🤢.

plixy · 14/05/2021 16:45

At least he chewed up the bag. When my beagle was about 6 months he grabbed a poo bag full of his own poo and swallowed it whole. No chewing.
I had to take him to the vets because of the bag. The vet laughed and said it's always beagles and labradors.
