Deverstated that I'm never going to be able to have another dog..
I have one at the moment but after him that's it for me.
How does anyone live without one? I know it sounds ridiculous.

OP posts:
LEMtheoriginal · 11/05/2021 22:48

Why cant you have another?

Welshcakes03 · 11/05/2021 22:57

The prices for one for me to have my breed it's one and half grand. The care and insurance is not the problem it's the initial cost.
I do have mental health issues and a dog is my comfort but to face the rest of my life without one breaks my heart.

Could you not get a rescue?

magicstar1 · 11/05/2021 23:17

You have one right now, so concentrate on him, and make the most of your time with him. You never know what will happen in the future....you might fall in love with a rescue dog. It could be any breed. We got one last year and I love her completely.

Welshcakes03 · 11/05/2021 23:24

That's great but rescue dog's aren't for everybody. People can make their own choices.

flippertygibbit · 11/05/2021 23:29

Don't waste time worrying about the future, you're just losing time on loving the dog you have. My current two dogs came from Gumtree and they're both pedigrees and were rather cheap as they had issues (which with the right love, care and attention) they no longer have.

longcoffeebreak · 11/05/2021 23:29

Is there a rescue organisation for your breed perhaps - or start saving?

The vet has told me I need to put current dog to sleep so its made me think of a future without him Sad

My breed is a Border Collie. I will have a Google see if anywhere rescues Borders.

The rescue I went to has had a lot of border collies. Hopefully you’ll find one when the time is right for you.

GCAcademic · 12/05/2021 00:13

There are definitely border collie rescues. I can’t imagine a future without a dog either .

somethinginthewater · 12/05/2021 06:37

Valgrays
Border Collie Trust
Border Collie Spot
Heathlands

All constantly full of collies. There are others as well.

Heathlands - no collies Valgrays - sent me to a Facebook page where a majority of the dog's AREN'T collies. To state they are constantly full of collies is incorrect. Border Collie spot have a few not FULL tho

Most of these dogs need specific homes.
No children
No cats
Rural

Rather get a puppy that I can work with from the start.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 12/05/2021 07:04

Sometimes rescues get puppies in. If you can, start to volunteer or fundraise for a rescue group so you can see how things work. Or offer to foster - a friend of mine has a dog that she fostered that ended up staying because she fitted in so well.

Wolfiefan · 12/05/2021 07:05

If you can’t afford a puppy (and I bet prices will come down) then do keep looking at rescues.
Breed club may also be able to steer you in the right direction.
I’m so sorry the vet has said that. But you have to do what’s best for your beloved dog.
Before I got my dog I volunteered for the cinnamon trust. I also dog walk for a rescue.
I hope you find a solution. Flowers

GCAcademic · 12/05/2021 07:14

Does it have to be a collie? I had a look at the rescue pages and those up for reforming do seem to be dogs with pretty serious behavioural issues. IME of spaniel rescues, the dogs doesn’t all seem to have the same problems of being nervous and reactive. I have also often seen spaniel-collie crosses in those rescues.

Thank you. It's going to be so quiet without him I'm dreading the silence.

Could you...

Save up?
Get a small loan?
Sell some stuff?

I understand wanting a puppy but remember prices won't stay this high forever. After June most people working from home will have to go back to the office. Dog walkers will be full and rescue centres will start to fill up. I think there will come a point in 2022 when you can't sell a puppy at all and they will start to become cheaper. Breeders will breed fewer litters etc

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 12/05/2021 07:40

Yep. You've made the choice. Why moan about it? Hmm

Hellcatspangle · 12/05/2021 07:42

Some rescues abroad rehome young dogs. Second chance retriever rescue found a bitch with a litter of puppies and they rehomed all the puppies (all vaccinated/health checked etc before rehoming) they are a mixture of breeds not just retrievers and the transport cost is far lower than buying a pup here. A friend rehomed a young collie from the souda shelter in Greece, try them.

Thank you. Apparently people are still buying at the moment if anything I think the prices have risen again. Thats what I'm terrified of breeders now know people will pay that amount so they won't bring their prices down.

OP I understand. I got a second dog as I was so worried about being without one.
Can you tag along with a friend for walks? Act as daycare for anyone?

TedMullins · 12/05/2021 07:51

Rescue dogs aren’t all the same, I wouldn’t give up on that idea. Yes, there are more barriers to getting one and they can have strict criteria for the sort of home they need but there are also other easy-going dogs that end up in rescues that don’t need specific kinds of homes. Keep looking. What about the breeder you got your current dog from? Are they still breeding or can they recommend another trusted breeder? The problem with breeders on the internet is you’ve no idea how ethical they are, especially when people are breeding just to cash in on high prices. There will be Facebook groups for collie owners that will likely have information on the best places to get them from.

Glad it's not just me. Thank you wolfiefan I could yes, I think it would be upsetting to start with but that's a great idea.
