Deverstated that I'm never going to be able to have another dog..
I have one at the moment but after him that's it for me.
How does anyone live without one? I know it sounds ridiculous.

Bless you. Yes it would be. But it’s good to have some ideas for what might help when you feel up to it. I waited years for my first dog. And she’s my absolute heart hound. I’ve said I may well need medicating when we lose her. They really are family. Flowers

StrongTea · 12/05/2021 08:00

Our border collie was a failed sheepdog, got her around 14months. No problems at all. Worth looking on farming sites and asking around vets etc.

Welshcakes03 · 12/05/2021 08:00

@TedMullins

Rescue dogs aren’t all the same, I wouldn’t give up on that idea. Yes, there are more barriers to getting one and they can have strict criteria for the sort of home they need but there are also other easy-going dogs that end up in rescues that don’t need specific kinds of homes. Keep looking. What about the breeder you got your current dog from? Are they still breeding or can they recommend another trusted breeder? The problem with breeders on the internet is you’ve no idea how ethical they are, especially when people are breeding just to cash in on high prices. There will be Facebook groups for collie owners that will likely have information on the best places to get them from.
No he was just a farmer so one off litter for a working dog. I'm hoping eventually I may find another farmer not a person who churns out borders just for money. Its not a definite no on a rescue so I will keep my eye on them but it all just seems so specific.

@Welshcakes03

In farming communities you find border collie pups that aren't suited to farm work, there's also a breed rescue organisation but they are very fussy on homes. My boy came from a farm years ago, no pedigree, he's international sheepdog registered

My advice is be patient, register with various rehoming services and keep an eye on the ads as many people are regretting getting a dog currently. Also prices are likely to drop once covid is over.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 12/05/2021 08:04

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel

That's great but rescue dog's aren't for everybody. People can make their own choices

Yep. You've made the choice. Why moan about it? Hmm

Sheesh - ever heard of empathy? OP is having to face having her current dog PTS and you can't comprehend that, for all sorts of reasons, not everyone can take on a rescue (young DC, having cats etc make it hard to even find one), and that some of us are better suited to moulding a puppy?

Yes I definitely get it I'm not certain I'll make it through losing current dog either. They are family absolutely wolfiefan. I hope they know what they mean to us.

Very soon rescues will be full of lockdown puppies needing good homes. Just be patient. Get to know your rescues and maybe let them know what you are looking for?

Thank you. I hope they do come down a bit at least.

Thank you. Figured they'd already made their mind up about me so didn't bother saying anything. Hope they don't lack empathy in real and it's just because they are anonymous on the Internet.

I feel your hurt OP. My daft old wonderful dog was PTS last month. I'm still heartbroken and I miss him every minute of every day. He was a rescue and he chose us, funnily enough, when a friend who fostered dogs turned up on the school run with him. Don't discount rescues, they make the most wonderful friends and leave their paw prints on your heart.

So sorry for your loss its so hard to lose them I hope your OK. That's lovely how you found your soul mate. I'm dreading the final day. Coming back home to a house without him with all his things. He got me through a abusive relationship, I really don't know how I'm going to cope without him and I feel stupid that I love him so much.

Agree with @minniemomo . We are farmers, we keep, sell to working homes and look for homes for ones we can see won't work, for a normal price. Hope it works out OP. I couldn't be without a dog either. We got our current dog just before we lost the last. She helped me so much.

Chocolateandamaretto · 12/05/2021 09:16

Very sorry about your lovely dog OP Flowers

We know people who breed borders (not at the moment) but they won't be putting their prices up when they do next have a litter. There are people out there, keep looking and investigating different avenues. I think the suggestion to get involved with rescue charities is a really great one, even if it doesn't lead to finding a pup it might be of some comfort to be doing something to help other dogs?

MovingtoEssex · 15/05/2021 16:45

Sorry to hear about your DDog.

Our Collie came from Wickaways as a 5 month old pup.
We've since fostered a good number of collies for a local rescue.

You might have to wait a short while but you'll definitely find one.

PollyRoulson · 15/05/2021 18:08

Oh Welshcakes I am sorry you are having to go through this. Collies are "my" breed. The best dogs ever and I love them to bits and do understand the amazing bond they have with their owners.

When you are in the position to get another dog pm me . I am heavily involved with a lot of collie rescues and also working collies.

If you have had a collie before a rescue collie will be jumping into your arms to live with an experienced collie owner. The good news with rescues is that you can see what you are getting Smile

There will be a collie out there for you and you will be able to make another wonderful collie bond with a different collie who will be so ready to help you heal.

Flowers

Also collies around here are not going for silly prices (yet)

PollyRoulson · 15/05/2021 18:11

Sirius at Wiccaweys looks an absolute sweety.

Also got a bit of a soft spot for [[https://wiccaweys.co.uk/dog/flynn/
Flynn]] but he needs space outside

Also border collie spot have some beauties

Beamur · 15/05/2021 18:17

Friend of mine has a dog from Wickerways too.
My own dog is collie/jrt cross - she's a rescue.

Wolfiefan · 15/05/2021 19:24

@MovingtoEssex
@Beamur
@PollyRoulson
That rescue was the subject of RSPCA investigation some years ago. I would be very cautious. Unless something major has changed.

Beamur · 15/05/2021 19:42

I'm not familiar with it myself. Friends got a dog from there maybe a year ago? Sweet dog, very shy but coming on well.
Friends are v experienced border collie owners.

MovingtoEssex · 15/05/2021 21:03

We got ours about 6 years ago before they moved to Lincolnshire.
No issues.
Home checked. Vaccinated. Met a few dogs. No pressure.

PollyRoulson · 15/05/2021 21:15

@Wolfiefan and cleared of any issues. Wiccaways has had to experience a huge amount of inaccurate and horrendous press and rumours. They are a good rescue.

PollyRoulson · 15/05/2021 21:27

It is horrendous that 8 years on from false claims the rumours re Wiccaweys are still being spouted Sad.

Sarah and Paul have done masses for dog welfare and are experienced caring, knowledgeable amazing people who always put dogs first.

Wolfiefan · 15/05/2021 21:36

They had multiple dogs seized. The RSPCA is awfully slow to act. I doubt they would have taken (over 20?) dogs with no reason.
Hope I’m wrong. Sad

PollyRoulson · 15/05/2021 21:44

Wolfie you are soooo wrong. There was no seizure however the RSPCA took some dogs when one of the owners had a heart attack. The dogs were returned shortly afterwards.

Media got hold of the wrong end of the stick and vicious rumours by one person made the whole thing kick off.

It is shameful that the gossip is carrying on so many years later especially when you only have incorrect information.
