Told by the farmer to keep dog on a lead?

mudstuck · 26/04/2021 13:19

I was walking my dog through a field and the farmer came up on his tractor and complained that he had seen my dog off the lead. There are no sheep or livestock around, and I would always always put her on a lead if I there was any chance of encountering any livestock.I did raise the fact that the field was empty with him and he said there are young pheasants going about... I apologised and agreed to keep her on a lead in future. However on reflection I am wondering if he is in the right to ask that of us? My dog doesn't have a very high prey drive at all and lives happily with three house cats. I don't allow her to chase wildlife although her recall, even though it's good, is not 100% and we have had the very occasional chase of a squirrel or deer. She probably would chase a pheasant if she saw one running away but she would never catch it. What do you think? Like I said I am happy to keep her on a lead just for an easy life. I live close to the farmer and don't want the trouble/conflict. Just wondering who is in the right..

No I wasn't aware. I am now. Like I said I don't allow her to chase wildlife but no dog is 100%. [/quote]
And yet somehow she has managed to chase squirrel and deer.

You were on his land. Keep your dog on a lead if for no other reason than out of respect to the person whose land you were walking on.

Yours,

a fellow dog owner, whose dog is an unreliable shit and chases squirrels so is always walked on a lead

What, you didn't the rules? You didn't know it was the nesting season?

sipsmith1 · 26/04/2021 15:12

Your dog is not allowed to stray from the footpath so if there is any doubt he will stray it needs to be on a lead.

Dogs are devastating for wildlife, you shouldn’t let them sniff around hedgerows. I am a dog owner but also manage large swathes of farmland.

krustykittens · 26/04/2021 15:13

You know, OP, I had a lot of sympathy for you as you apologised and did what he asked when he explained pheasants were around but that last post really shows you just want a loophole to do what you like. I'm out...

mudstuck · 26/04/2021 15:13

@BillyTodd
Every dog has chased something at some point unless kept exclusively on the lead which is very few in my experience.

@mudstuck

So what your saying is many farmers are absolute bastards who will shoot a family pet even if it's done nothing wrong? And you want me to respect these people?
Nobody cares whether you respect them or not, but why would you want to risk the life of your beloved "family pet"?

I love my dog, and I don't want him to get shot dead by a farmer, so I keep him on a lead when we walk on farmland. It's really not difficult.

No, I'm just getting annoyed at all these people who think it's fine for the farmer to shoot my dog. I have already stated I will keep her on.

Just wondering who is in the right..

The farmer in the right and you are in the wrong.

These people who believe they are above the law...
My irony meter just exploded!

Nah, not buying it. Now you're just being a gf.

Slightly off topic but I detest pheasant breeding. Breeding beautiful birds just to entertain a group of barstewards on Boxing Day.

The birds have little roadsense because of the way they are bred in captivity, poor things ...

Sheep miscarry very easily if stressed....many people are unaware of this but if a dog chases them they will lose their lambs. By the time the farmer gets his gun out to shoot the dog the damage will have been done.

Farms are working environments and dogs should not be off lead on them at all.

mudstuck · 26/04/2021 15:16

Shoot my dog for no reason and just wait to see what happens to your sheep... apparently it's the lawless Wild West out there with all these gun shooting farmers so I can just do as I please also... 🙄🙄

So... what was your point again?

Your dog was off lead, off path and a farmer asked you to put it back on lead because there were ground nesting birds in the field.

Whether by law, as has been quoted a few times here, or by guidance, also quoted, or just common courtesy you are in the wrong to be annoyed by that request.

All the rest is just self serving faux outrage!

I would blame the owner, not the farmer.

People who don't know that dogs must be on leads during ground bird nesting season are allowing their dog to do something very wrong.

If the owner was genuinely doing nothing wrong (ie had the dog on the lead) then of course the dog will not be shot.

Owners who haven't read the Country Code are doing a massive disservice to their pets and failing in their care of them

littlepattilou · 26/04/2021 15:18

@mudstuck Come off it! No WAY can you think you're in the right here.

Irresponsible dog owners are the bane of society.

Wolfiefan · 26/04/2021 15:18

Erm no.
But you could keep your dog on a lead and so avoid it being shot.
The farmer asked you to keep it on an lead and explained why. Did I miss the part where your dog was nearly shot? Confused

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/04/2021 15:18

The birds have little roadsense because of the way they are bred in captivity, poor things ... To be fair the same ould be said of badgers! No road sense whatsoever!

I agree.

When Prince Andrew shrugged about his 'just an ordinary shooting weekend' in his Emily Maitliss interview, I assumed it would have been part of this industry.

AllThatisSolid · 26/04/2021 15:19

This thread is getting ridiculous. Farmers cannot simply shoot dogs on sight, they have to be doing harm, like worrying or attacking livestock

The only person suggesting that farmers have this right is the OP herself. Who seems to have a shaky grasp on reality & the law ...

Never mind!

No. Simply responding to all these folk who think a dog can be dog just for being in a field and off its lead. Read the thread.

Your husband gave the hill walkers a lift in his jeep so they could enjoy their picnic safely out of the way?

If I have understood you correctly that restores some of my faith in other people
