Do mutts exist any more?

LucysSkyDiamonds · 25/04/2021 16:50

We had mutts when I was growing up. Two of them came from my great aunt's farm, where her dog, mostly Jack Russell was never spayed so had the occasionally litter of unknown paternity. Our local resuces never seem to have mutts, only known breeds or recognised cross breeds. Our last dog had the look of Jack Russell, Westie, and collie in him but God only knows what else was lurking in the gene pool.

Here's my mutt. A rescue of unknown parentage from North London /All Dogs Matter. Basically a terrier with a dash of corgi and German Shepherd.

Here!

sandybayley · 25/04/2021 20:17

Third time lucky!

sandybayley · 25/04/2021 20:17

I give up 😬

Borris · 25/04/2021 20:18

I have a mutt. I mean I know her parentage but she's a mix of 3 breeds so have gone with "crossbreed" rather than a made up breed name!

Darklane · 25/04/2021 20:29

HolaVida
Love the name Curlypoo Grin describes these “ designer” mongrels perfectly.
Growing up we had working sheepdogs but also a small mongrel from a chance mating of one of our nymphomaniac collie bitches who then went on to have a couple of litters from heaven knows what breed of local roaming Romeo. They were great little dogs. Couldn’t sell them for megabucks like now though ( slipped up there, could have been ahead of the game wink] used to give them away to kind local people.

CMOTDibbler · 26/04/2021 08:10

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman we get a lot who are handed in or dumped when they aren't good enough for coursing. As you say, they mix is dependent on what they are intended to course for.
We're always asked what mix they are, and how big pups will get. Which of course we never know, though my last pup had a very healthy dose of saluki with gorgeous floofy ears and a big feathery tail - plus the eyeliner

Eaumyword · 26/04/2021 08:14

@Hellocatshome

Yep I've got a fantastic mongrel, he is from Romania though.
That little face! ♥️
HerMammy · 26/04/2021 08:15

I have one, rescued as a pup, looks like a smaller all black collie, nearly 11; never had a days illness and still fit as a fiddle.
Though at a fun dog show once, a woman exclaimed oh I love your sprollie 🤣🤣
Seems there’s a name for everything 🤣

Sunnyday321 · 26/04/2021 08:18

Back in the 50s, 60s, 70s , dogs roamed freely. You opened your door and off went your dog for a few hours. I can remember as a child being scared to walk by a group of 3/4 that would often gather in a street near me.
I think that is the era of the mongrel dog when you didn't know who the father of the pups were.

MyNameForToday1980 · 26/04/2021 08:19

I say this to my husband all the time... Growing up we had a spaniel + collie + something else.

A little larger than a King Charles, with collie fur. He was a Good Boy.

HerMammy · 26/04/2021 08:20

My girl and my DDs two rescue mutleys 🥰

When chip was read said whippet x
She put on weight , had her dna test ( had a thread on here under a different name)
Turned out
50% Belgian mali
25% whippet
12.5% greyhound
12.5 % staffie
I had to research all breeds so I had an understanding of behaviour etc

Do mutts exist any more?
drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/04/2021 08:36

Pressed too soon. She has the build of a whippet and the speed
A mane and fluffy tail - Belgian mali?
Think the speed is a bit of greyhound as well.
She has the eyes and grin of a staffie
She's a medium sized dog and when stood with a whippet is generally the same size.
Oh she rounds us up and takes us mainly to the fridge where she wants us Grin

This is a question that occurs to me whenever I see an MN thread about people paying thousands of pounds for a dog these days. When I was a kid almost all the dogs I knew were mongrels that could be adopted cheaply or for free from local farms or the like.

Mine was free , but cost a few hundred to fix as the bastard had broken her 😠

“When I was a kid almost all the dogs I knew were mongrels that could be adopted cheaply or for free from local farms or the like.”

The thing is, it’s not just dog ownership that’s changed... farming has too.

When I was young I knew loads of fairly small scale farmers that would have a terrier type dog for rats and a few collie types for herding... they’d have litters, some planned, some unplanned with various parentage.

Most of those smaller farms aren’t owned individually anymore.

LadyWhistledownsQuill · 26/04/2021 09:30

I think a lot of the mutts were the product of dogs not being spayed or neutered, and being allowed to roam, both of which have substantially reduced.

There's still plenty of Heinz 57 mutts coming in from Romania etc where street dogs abound - though they do come with their own issues, including an above average incidence of behaviour issues

Iwantacookie · 26/04/2021 09:46

I see what you mean op there arent any mutts any more they are all fancy cross breeds.
Not sure if it's people jumping on the bandwagon and seeing it as a money maker or if there has been selective breeding to try eradicate any issues within a breed. Sadly I think it is the former.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 26/04/2021 11:55

@CMOTDibbler, thanks for replying.

If I hadn't been completely sucked in by a particular gundog breed, I'd have ended up with lurchers. I love their practicality.

I think it's because people's attitudes have changed in recent years.

It's no longer acceptable to let your dog wander the streets or fields unattended, so the likelihood of a random mating occurring is much lower than it used to be.

It's also much more common to get your dogs' neutered and spayed at a younger age, especially bitches. Most people spay their bitches after the 1st or 2nd season to avoid the risk of illnesses like pyometra or mammary cancer.

The increase in dog walkers/doggy daycare probably also has something to do with it - many won't take entire males and bitches in season can't attend either, so it's more convenient to have your dogs "done".

But saying all that, mongrels still exist, but if you dare tell someone that their cockapoo/labradoodle/cavapoochon is a mongrel, they get all up in arms about it, even though the definition is "any animal resulting from the crossing of different breeds or types." So, any crossbreed, basically.

Nowadays mongrels are the new trend - they're just called designer dogs so they cost several thousand pounds instead. It's much, much cheaper to buy a labrador, a poodle or a shih-tzu than it is to buy any of the existing "crossbreed" mixes out there.

imovethestarsforno1 · 26/04/2021 13:47

star pup is a mix mum is a springer dad a larger bull breed, breeder said mastiff but im fairly sure he was a cross as well. pup is very leggy and lean but developing more of a bully face and coat. Quite a few randoms have asked if hes a lab

Warmhandscoldheart · 29/04/2021 13:41

Mine's a mongrel 💙 but he's registered as a crossbreed on his insurance because apparently mongrel isn't an official term anymore 🤔

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/04/2021 16:34

Any dog that's a cross breed is a mutt in my opinion.

sandybayley · 29/04/2021 20:03

Adorable @Warmhandscoldheart - my favourite breed is a mutt
