poorly puppy 7 days after buying

Hello.
We got a new puppy just under a week ago (pedigree from respected breeders) we insured him straight away. He is now very poorly (exact cause unknown as yet) and has been admitted to the vets and having various tests.
Our insurance doesn't cover him for the first 14 days for illness. The breeder doesn't have any form of insurance for him and has offered to pay a certain amount towards fees but this may come to half at a rough guess.
Do pets who get poorly within these 14 days just slip through the net? It seems wrong that we've insured him immediately yet are liable to pay £££ in vets fees so soon.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Most pedigree pups who are registered with the KC come with 4 weeks free insurance if I remembered correctly.

Given that your breeder didn't have this is your pup a crossbreed?

SummerSazz · 27/03/2021 17:18

Sorry to hear your puppy is poorly. Our breeder got 3 months insurance through the kennel club which we got with her at 8 weeks. We then had a month to arrange follow on insurance.

Hope pup is better soon.

I have always thought that they do this so you don't suddenly take out insurance 'because' your dog needs vet care e.g. like taking out any insurance when something is already 'broken'.

Fingers crossed your pup is ok Thanks

scochran · 27/03/2021 17:22

I didn't get my last puppy with breeder's insurance but I do believe it's expected from kennel club breeders etc as part of agreed puppy pack. Can you refer to them if she is registered with them?
I switched my insurance after first week or so to Bought by Many I'm sure they said it would start right away as I had been planning to keep the other one for 2 weeks and they said didn't need to.

GordonettaBennett · 27/03/2021 17:26

Our breeder let their insurance run long enough for us to get our insurance sorted and for our 14 day period to elapse so there was never a point we couldn't have made a claim on the breeders insurance or ours.

Hope puppy is ok.

Clymene · 27/03/2021 17:31

My puppy came with kennel club insurance for a few weeks, not uninsured.

Are you sure he's pedigree? KC offer 5 weeks free cover for registered puppies.

Leonberger · 27/03/2021 17:31

When a puppy is registered with the kennel club it automatically gets 4 weeks free while it’s still with the breeder.

Then you get your own, and there’s usually 2 weeks crossover.

Presumably this puppy is not KC reg?

Hope your puppy feels better soon

Sunflowergirl1 · 27/03/2021 17:32

I would look again at how reputable this breeder is

Brewdoggydog · 27/03/2021 17:42

Our vets do 4 weeks free insurance, provided you've registered with them and pup has had a health check. None of this is helpful for you now of course. I'm so sorry, this is a puppy purchasers worst nightmare. 2 weeks exclusion is pretty standard but can appreciate it feels really rough right now. Hope pup gets better and doesn't cost you too much!

tsmainsqueeze · 27/03/2021 17:52

Hi sorry that pup is ill , this won't help you now but may help others .
Vet nurse -some' WELL KNOWN BRAND' connected vet's offer 4 free weeks immediate cover for dogs , cats and rabbits once they have had an initial check over from vet .
You can use this time to shop around while you decide who to use as you are not committed to using them , they call you at the end of the 4 weeks to see if you want to commit to them that's all .
Not all new pup policies have immediate cover .

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/03/2021 18:20

A reputable breeder should provide insurance which covers the first four weeks - this comes with the initial KC registration.

Are you sure the puppies are KC registered?

car1sberg · 27/03/2021 18:21

Thanks so much for the replies.
He is definitely KC registered, we just paid to swap to our details for him. They aren't open until Monday annoyingly as I had hoped they would shed some light.
I'll be calling them first thing Monday! Thank you

Have never let a pup go without interim insurance in place, or known any reputable breeder who would do so.

Hope the vet soon has a handle on what the issue is and your pup recovers, OP. Dreadful worry

Mmmmdanone · 27/03/2021 18:32

We got caught out by the 14 day thing too. If I'd known I'd have got the insurance 2 weeks before we got our puppy. It was only a fairly minor tooth issue discovered at first vet check though so didn't cost a massive amount. However it was a couple of hundred £ we could have done without at the time.

D0ntAtMe · 27/03/2021 18:35

In another who had a few weeks free with kennel club. The breeder told us the puppy would come with two weeks free and gave some suggestions if other companies and advised arranging the cover in a way that meant the 14 days you can't claim is already covered by the free insurance.

I knew a lot (if not all) had a period at the start of the policy where you can't claim, when I was researching insurance costs to make sure we could afford the breed we wanted and my plan was to take the cover out starting from two weeks before we collected the puppy so that we covered from the moment she left the breeders house. I have anxiety though and that played a part as imagined crashing the car in the way home and the puppy being injured Blush

I can understand why they do have the two weeks where you can't claim at the start, I've had a family member who've tried to take it out after their pet has been injured because they chose not to bother with insurance as they believe it's a waste of money and sadly had their animal PTS. I guess it's people like my family member who are the reason for it.

Clymene · 27/03/2021 18:40

I can only assume your breeder isn't very experienced as it's free and standard if you register puppies but you have to apply for it.

Clymene · 27/03/2021 18:42

Oops posted too soon: www.kcinsurance.co.uk/breeders/products/5-weeks-free-puppy-insurance/

Honestly, I would push for them to cover all the costs. It's absolutely standard for lifetime care to exclude conditions that were identified at birth so that's why there's free insurance for a limited time.

Your breeder should know this.

mn81987 · 27/03/2021 19:27

Seems like your breeder isn't as good as you first thought! I've never heard of a kc registered puppy going to a new home without at least a weeks cover.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 27/03/2021 20:04

We had four weeks follow on insurance post purchase which then allows time for puppy insurance to come through-why don’t you have that?

Floralnomad · 27/03/2021 20:10

What are his symptoms ? Hopefully he will feel better soon but as every other poster has said any respectable breeder would have sold him with 4 weeks of insurance . Dogs that don’t have insurance or are waiting for the insurance cover to kick in don’t ‘slip through the net’ as their owners obviously have to take responsibility for the bills . One thing to bear in mind is that whatever is wrong with him most probably will lead to exclusions on the policy you have set up so it may be worth reviewing that .

Chunkymenrock · 27/03/2021 20:13

What's wrong with him, op?

Wolfiefan · 27/03/2021 20:14

Breeder doesn’t sound reputable at all. Pup should have come with some insurance to cover you.
Pedigree doesn’t mean good breeder.
Neither does KC.
And I’m not sure what you mean by respected.

bluebluezoo · 27/03/2021 20:15

Another one saying a reputable breeder should have provided 4 weeks insurance as part of the sale.

Where did you find the breeder? What’s up with the pup?

imalmostthere · 27/03/2021 20:16

That is absolutely not a reputable breeder!

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 27/03/2021 21:31

all reputable breeders arrange a month's free insurance from the minute they leave the breeder. Your breeder is not reputable I'm afraid. In 30+yrs of dog ownership I've never had a puppy that wasn't covered for the first month - even rescue dogs come from the RSPCA with a month's cover.
