poorly puppy 7 days after buying

Hello.
We got a new puppy just under a week ago (pedigree from respected breeders) we insured him straight away. He is now very poorly (exact cause unknown as yet) and has been admitted to the vets and having various tests.
Our insurance doesn't cover him for the first 14 days for illness. The breeder doesn't have any form of insurance for him and has offered to pay a certain amount towards fees but this may come to half at a rough guess.
Do pets who get poorly within these 14 days just slip through the net? It seems wrong that we've insured him immediately yet are liable to pay £££ in vets fees so soon.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

@Shambolical1 yes, our puppy's actual breeder does NOT have a license.

Signs that made us think this was all legit and they were trustworthy breeders were a large social media following, positive reviews, very thorough advertisement.

I really don't mean this as a dig, but a large social media following and lots of good reviews both scream commercial breeder (at best) and puppy farm (at worst).

Every breeder on social media (that I've seen seen) with a big following and lots of positive posts/reviews has been a puppy farm. Examples include Kelly's Kennels, Raffles and Douglas Hall Kennels.

Decent breeders don’t share lots on social media or advertise. This sounds like a puppy farmer or a commercial breeder.
Always go to the breed club first. Assume the worst. Ask the questions. How many bitches? How many litters per year? Health testing?
Hoping others who want a pup see this.
Hope yours is ok OP.

“Decent breeders don’t share lots on social media”

Well in fairness - they might, I mean... there’s no reason why they wouldn’t, just... I can’t see why they’d have a particularly large following as it’d be about as interesting as looking as anyone else with a few dogs posts.

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2021 18:51

Because really good breeders don’t always want the world knowing when they have pups. They share with friends but not the public at large. They don’t advertise.
Those who have FB groups for all their “happy customers” are generally churning out animals for cash.

@Wolfiefan 'Those who have FB groups for all their “happy customers” are generally churning out animals for cash.'

Yes - exactly this seems to be the case, in hindsight. So cross them then and us for falling for it!

You can find some breeders social media fairly easily - but it’s no more interesting if you don’t know them than me posting photos of my pets really, so they tend to just have their friends following them, rather than an actual social media ‘presence’ is what I mean.

The thing is, I kind of understand why people that aren’t really into dogs get caught out by stuff like that tbh.

If you’re buying anything other than an animal, lots of satisfied customers is exactly what you’d look for...

But obviously the issue with animals is that lots of customers means they’re breeding loads and that isn’t a good thing.

@Wolfiefan sorry I didn't realise all my typos there Blush
I think this will be our only dog now to be honest. The whole nightmare of it all has probably put us off ever having another!

Oh @car1sberg I’m so sorry. You’re having a really awful start to dog ownership. Hoping it’s an illness that is cleared up and doesn’t recur.
My own start wasn’t exactly easy. A puppy I couldn’t leave AT ALL and then she started trying to chew her own feet off. Allergies.
She’s now four and a half and she’s so easy. So easy i made the decision to get another. Grin
How many wolfhounds are too many exactly?? Hmm
