If you don't have a garden how often do you walk your dog?

What's the earliest/ latest you take your dog out if you don't have a garden?

We have a small garden with fake grass and prefer the dog not to wee there so always take her out. She seems to be able to hold it for 12h with no problem but I'm worried that's not healthy....

I'vejust moved into a house that shares a courtyard with a couple of other houses, so there's nowhere for my dog to go out unsupervised. But I am just across the road from the beach, so plenty of space there. I walk her about every three hours during th day and she goes quite happily twelve hours overnight. If she needed to go out before that, she'd certainly let me know!

Do you mean overnight? Or have you gone 12 hours during the day without letting her out?

abbey44 · 26/03/2021 19:51

Oh, I missed about first and last times - first is abut 8 or 9am, last is about 9-10pm.

I mean overnight.

Ok so looks like 12h overnight is not so bad... Reading that they shouldn't be more than 8-10h without going...

We have a back garden with no grass and she’ll only go on grass unfortunately. So we go for a walk first thing in the morning, she had a trip to the park around lunchtime, and another trip out for a wee before bed.

tabulahrasa · 26/03/2021 21:05

When I didn’t have a garden, quick toilet walks to the nearest patch of grass were the first things I did in the morning and the last thing I did before I went to bed at night and then a couple of actual walk length walks through the day and any more toilet trips if I thought it had been a while or if they asked, but mostly just the 2 trips and 2 actual walks most days.

Dobbyafreeelf · 26/03/2021 21:07

I made a sort of doggy toilet. It was a 1m square seed tray with gravel in it and a pipe fixed into one corner for a drain. It was filled with gravel and then initially had turf on the top but moved to bark chips after awhile. Mine was on a slope so drained out the hole nicely and pipe went straight to drain. I taught pups to go on that bit every time. Then regularly hosed it off to rinse it through so it didn't smell if it didn't rain for awhile.
Cost about £20 to make.

SimonJT · 26/03/2021 21:11

Here last trip out is around 11:30pm, I get up at 5:45am so his morning wee is a couple of minutes after that. He sometimes wakes us up in the night to go to the toilet.

He has at least three walks a day.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 26/03/2021 21:23

I only have a shared garden and my neighbour hates dogs weeing on it so since he had all his jabs we’ve gone out for walks whenever he needs the loo. From the age of about 6 months he could last from 10 or 11 at night to 8 in the morning and now he’s fully grown he can go from 10 to 10! He tells us when he needs out and he comes in to our bed early in the morning and would wake us up to be let out if he needed it. Until he was about 9 months he went out 5 or 6 times a day - 7am, 11, 1, 3, 6 and 10ish, but then he dropped the mid-afternoon wee and then the mid-morning one so now he’ll do 7/8am, 12/1, 5.30/6 and then 9.30/10 on a weekday, and at weekends he sometimes wants out at 10 but sometimes stays in until we’re ready to go to bed at midnight. If we’ve stayed up until 2am he gets a wee when we go to bed and then will sleep until 11am the next day!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 26/03/2021 21:27

Oh, it probably depends on the size of the dog - mine is a cocker spaniel!

Overthinking1 · 26/03/2021 21:28

when i didn't have a garden it was 8-8.30 am first and 10pm last.

fruitpastille · 26/03/2021 21:31

Mine will easily do 12 hours or a bit more overnight even though I do have a garden.

JackieWeaverFever · 26/03/2021 21:36

Is there a reason why you can't get rid of the astroturf and lay some grass down for your dog?

puppygalore · 26/03/2021 22:05

My Lab puppy easily goes 12 hours overnight and she wees on our artificial grass, it's one that isn't damaged by pee and it rains so much here anyway I think it washes off. She'd go longer but we are up with the kids by 8 anyway, so she goes out then. However she has to be reminded to go as she just wants hugs and playing first thing, so I know she's not desperate. I take her out anywhere between 8.30-10pm for her last toilet trip. In the day she goes every few hours, a bit more frequently at the moment as she's in heat.

Because we prefer the astro! 🙂

We have a yard but ddog refuses to set foot in it. He is walked at 8:30am, about 3pm and 8:30/9pm if he ever indicates he wants to go out in-between times (very rare) we take him for a quick walk round the block.

LaCerbiatta · 26/03/2021 22:27

Actually she can go on the astro, it's been done properly with sand underneath etc, but I just don't really like the idea of it for some reason!

My elderly lab will go 11pm-12 noon if it’s bad weather and he doesn’t want to go outside. My puppy now does 12 midnight until 7 (she’s 4 months).

FuckyouCovid21 · 27/03/2021 07:12

12 hours seems a long time, maybe I'm jealous that some people get that much sleep!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/03/2021 07:15

We have a garden but our three year old beagle will happily go nearly twelve hours without needing to go - especially overnight.

During the day he can go eight hours if the weather is bad, though he prefers to go every 3-4 hours.

hellcatspangle · 27/03/2021 07:17

Holding for 12 hours is fine. Normally mine goes for a wee at 10pm and isn't desperate to get out when I wake up at 7, I'll open the door and half the time she doesn't bother. Some evenings if she's been for a wee on a teatime walk she refuses to wee again at bedtime and sleeps all night.

megletthesecond · 27/03/2021 07:20

Replace the plastic in your garden with grass that your dog and the wildlife will appreciate? Then you won't have to go out for late walks.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 27/03/2021 07:30

Some dogs quite like going on astroturf and you can clean it.

Dog 1 will hold it for about 18 hours, we’ve not left her that long and we have a large garden that she has access to anytime she wants. It’s that she doesn’t want to. Going to the toilet in our garden has always been a bit of a palaver, we have to throw a ball for her sometimes and if it’s not quite the right weather she’ll only go if really desperate. I’ve tried making her stay out until she does something but she just won’t. Pup on the other hand if I tell him to have a wee, he’ll at least have a try even if nothing comes out.

silkpillowcases · 27/03/2021 08:25

I have a small breed dog and live in an apartment, didn't want to be beholden to going out immediately and last thing at night so I have a puppy loo on my terrace (from Amazon) where she happily goes. Otherwise she gets 2-3 30 min walks a day.

LaCerbiatta · 27/03/2021 09:57

Thanks everyone, I feel better that others also seem OK for 12h. I was worried that although she can hold it for 12h it could be bad for her to do it.

Thanks for the suggestion to replace our plastic grass for real one, but we don't want to, we like the plastic. It's been the best investment! The company that installed it told us that we would gain an extra room and it really is true. Amazing for gymnastics and football and tennis without all the mud and holes and damage, without all the dirt brought into the house. I would never change it back!
