Border collie. Too much??

Just had confirmation that I'm not going back to the office. My job is completely flexible and I can work when I want. I've always wanted a dog but only now is it a real possibility. We have 2 DC, 10 & 8 and 2 cats (and a few ferrets but they live outside in a big shed). We live quite rurally so plenty of space for walking.

Before he died, DF used to have dogs and my favourite were his two border collies. I really want one. I want an intelligent dog who is up for some training beyond "sit" and some long walks. I'm home alone all day so really want a dog who'll enjoy plenty of interaction. I'd like a decent sized dog, I really don't like small yappy dogs. I'm also not fond of too much drooling... I know that's weird but DF had a lab who drooled every meal time and it really grossed me out.

So I think on paper a border collie sounds great but I'm also aware they're alot of work and although I've been around dogs, I'm a first time dog owner. I don't know of many dog breeds and whether there's something else out there that would be a better fit. Should I go for something a bit "easier" first?

Cardigan corgis.

Big dogs in small bodies. Happy to laze about when you want to but up for action when you're ready. Perfect dogs! 😁

I can't give an unbiased opinion. I've had a red tricolour collie as our family pet for the last 9 years and he's wonderful.

It’s unfortunate this was posted before your thread got going.
I know a few people with border collies and GSDs.
They ALL got the border first.
The Border is the easier dog, without a shadow of a doubt.
It is true Borders can be problematic with herding instinct, they can be high strung, sensitive etc but I have never in my life seen the intense, frankly terrifying, level of unprovoked aggression to people/dogs in the distance that I have seen from almost all GSDs in a border collie.

I have had several border collies over the years. I love them to bits. Personally, if you're not sure how to manage them, I'd invest in a book about them .
The main thing I can say is that you need to be both firm and loving to them in equal amounts. They are sensitive, keen to please and clever. These traits can lead them to becoming anxious if they're not sure of where their boundaries are.
They need to know if you're a reliable boss. And if you're not, they'll either stress or become the boss themselves. They won't be being naughty, they're just like that. It's their nature.
I do play with my BC. Then, when finish playing, I always say that. And I never start playing again. Because I'm clear, I don't get hassled. And we get along very well. Grin

Collies are the most awesome dogs - even Jacinda Ardern realises they need a good scratch on the ears Grin
You need to put the work in so that they know you're the boss, and keep them busy (or they make their own fun) - physically and mentally busy. Ddog loves trying tricks, rounding up waves, and is just lovely-natured and affectionate. I don't think I'd have another breed (though those tolling retrievers look pretty good...).
