I'm pretty sure he's eaten them before as I didn't know it was an issue until recently and he's 6. I dropped 1 on the floor.

I wouldn't be concerned if its just the one in an adult dog. Our dog ate many a bunch of grapes (counter surfer!) back before we knew about the risks

That's what rational me says. Irrational me is a bit wobbly!

My naughty bloody dpuppy ate a full box of mince pies in December...
All good.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/03/2021 20:31

Im sorry but you need to get him to the vets, when did this happen? They dont affect all dogs but for some one raisin can lead to life threatening illness

Easterbunnygettingready · 04/03/2021 20:33

Op says he has eaten them previously...
Some ddogs must react differently.. My childhood ddog had a 2 finger kitkat every day. She lived to be 20 years old... Nowadays she would have been rushed to the vets after a lick!

SpringIsSprung1 · 04/03/2021 20:35

My Cocker has found all kinds of food that have been chucked out onto the grass verge. He's had a doughnut and a wrap amongst other things. He's a bit of a resource guarder so once in his mouth there's no chance of getting it out. He has a much better sense of smell obviously, so finds it before I even see itBlush Never come to any harm thankfully.

nevernotstruggling · 04/03/2021 20:42

The link posted says 6-12 hours to show symptoms so he's going to the vet in the morning if he's doing anything weird. I'd be surprised though if he reacts he's a massive pig and eats everything he shouldn't and not reacted.

I might wake in the night several times to check on him like a baby. Even though he sleeps in my room!

I had no idea! Our 16 week old springer jumped on the kitchen table and ate my daughter’s bowl of grapes a few days ago. She was at the vets today and pronounced to be in excellent health...

Trumplosttheelection · 04/03/2021 21:32

My aunts cav once ate most of a fruit cake. He was a puppy too. Should have killed him, did make him chuck up hugely. He was fine.

nevernotstruggling · 04/03/2021 21:34

I dunno why I'm letting this get to me. My gorgeous but dizzy greyhound ate a whole Xmas cake. Don't get me wrong she had quite an upset tummy and felt very sorry for herself but I wouldn't say she was ill!

I wouldn't worry about it. If he'd eaten a whole packet I'd be more concerned.

DramaAlpaca · 04/03/2021 21:38

Honestly, OP, I wouldn't be concerned about this at all. Don't give it another thought.

GreenHairThingy · 04/03/2021 21:43

I think 1 raisin will be OK for an adult dog. Not an expert though.

I recently had my 4.5 month lab at the vets after she ate approx 10 grapes.

Vet told me that basically there is no rhyme or reason as to why some dogs react and others don't. There is also no set amount that can prove fatal, a handful of grapes for one dog could kill it whereas a bunch of grapes for another and it would be fine.

I had Pup at vets 30 mins after ingestion and they made her vomit and got 7 grapes out (and a lump of chewed unidentifiable plastic Hmm) they gave me 2 treatment options, take her home and monitor her but return ASAP at first sign of illness or the (or their?) protocol which is admit her, get her hooked up to IV fluids and monitor for 48-72 hours with blood tests to check kidney function at set times.

I went with the protocol and just under £1k and approx 48 hours later she was home having been ruined by the staff, made herself a total PITA (didn't like being left alone so ended up being molly-coddled and spoiled rotten!) and I was very thankful that she was totally unharmed.

I know some dogs eat all sorts and get away with it, but with her being so young I didn't want to risk it.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/03/2021 21:54

I wish people wouldn't post stories about how their dog ate a billion raisins and was fine. It's completely irrelevant that your dog was fine, and you could end up talking someone out of seeking help for their dog when it's actually needed.

Raisins aren't the same as chocolate. It is different for every dog.

BalancedIndividual · 04/03/2021 21:59

1 raisin.....come on people...use common sense....

nevernotstruggling · 04/03/2021 22:05

Well it's about 4 hours now. He's doing exactly what he usually does at this time of day. Snoring beside me.
I will be monitoring carefully and he will be going to the vet if there's anything up with him.
I will report back.

Op had already said her ddog has had raisins before. Raisins.. This being 1 raisin surely all in agreement it's fine?

He's eaten everything before....except mushrooms. He doesn't agree that they are food.

Maybe you should use your own common sense and research why 1 (yes one!!) grape or raisin can be FATAL to dogs. Every dog reacts differently to these fruits. It’s not the same as chocolate where toxicity calculators can be use size, breed and quantity to determine if the quantity eaten will be dangerous. So while, in op’s case she thinks her dog has eaten them before and has been fine, it’s likely the dog will be fine, the “it’s one grape / raisin it won’t do any harm” sentiment is dangerous.

Notapheasantplucker · 04/03/2021 22:20

I wouldn't worry either, it's been so long after he ate it and he seems absolutely fine.
I gave my dog raisins as a 'healthy treat' when he was a puppy, then I found out he shouldn't have had them. I absolutely shit myself, I took him to the vets and stayed awake with him all night because I was so scared he was going to die.
He didn't, lesson learnt. Grin

Eloisedublin123 · 04/03/2021 22:24

No need to worry Op. my retriever ate about 4 raisins one year and I rang the vet hospital and they asked her weight, (28kg) and said 4 raisins was fine

Eloisedublin123 · 04/03/2021 22:24

4 raisins at once I mean, a few years ago!
