Toilet training in very cold weather

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 19:55

New doggily dog arrived today, she is of course supremely intelligent, and we adore her. We have been told to take her out for the toilet every hour, but, it’s freeezing! We are cold, she is shivering! I didn’t want to use puppy pads, but didn’t think about the cold! How do we do this?

Put a coat on her.

CMOTDibbler · 27/02/2021 20:11

You just keep going out! I keep a coat by the back door to put on when I go out with the puppy, and fluffy crocs

SummerSazz · 27/02/2021 20:12

We got a puppy in late November so we've seen all weathers! Encourages them to go quickly!! Like pp I have a fleece and boots by the door, ready to pop out.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 20:17

What about her getting cold though? She goes all shivery!

Like I said, get her a coat too and pop it on her when you go out. She'll be fine if she shivers a bit - it might encourage her to get it over with and pee!
CMOTDibbler · 27/02/2021 21:33

For very tiny or thin (I foster puppies for a rescue) pups I do pop a coat on then to go out if it's cold. But generally its a good incentive to get on with the job, and they'll warm up soon enough

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 21:54

We’ve just been out now and I think she had a wee. She kept sort of snuggling into a corner so I don’t know if that was cos she was cold or what.

Do I take her out through the night if she is awake?

OP posts:
Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 21:55

CMOTdribbler I don’t have a coat for her.

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2021 21:57

You take her out. On a lead so you know she goes. Keep moving so she doesn’t get too cold. Not for an hour at a time. She won’t freeze. If she doesn’t go then watch her and get back outside at the first sign of needing to go.
You’ll be out more than every hour!

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 22:10

How often should she wee? She’s asleep now, do I just take her out when she’s awake? How long do I give it if she doesn’t go?

OP posts:
Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 22:10

She’s 9 weeks btw

Have a look at FB group dog training advice and support. They have files.
But after sleeping and eating and drinking and playing etc
Don’t wake a sleeping baby though! Just stay close to get them outside when they wake and need to go. Praise when they do!

PollyRoulson · 27/02/2021 22:15

Take her out every hour she is awake.
When she wakes up
After she has eaten
After she has had a play
Do not wake her to take her out
Yes if she wakes in the night you will have to take her out

You will learn how long to wait some dogs wee straight away others like a good mooch and sniff first. I would be waiting outside for a bit watch her body language. Also wait a minute of two after she has weed to check she has all finished.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 22:20

Ok. On it, big coat and slippers at the ready!

We have a crate, but she seems to prefer sitting on a human. I’ll look on that Facebook site. I had planned to try and coax her towards the crate and if she went in, all well and good, and if she didn’t, well she might fancy it another day. My friend says I should just toilet her and put her to bed and leave her, with water and a snack and puppy pads and she might howl a bit but would get used to it. That seems different to what I understood crate training to be. It’s all confusing!

We got our puppy in November and it was way colder than this. There was no fecking way I was standing outside in the pitch black freezing my tits off during the night. We used puppy pads day and night until there came a time she could sleep through the night which was for about 4 weeks. Puppy had no problem whatsoever transitioning from pads to outside

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2021 22:23

@Tankflybosswalkjam that group also has the BEST advice on crate training.
Ditch the pads.
Sleep close to pup tonight.
Also YABVU not to share pics. Shall expect some tomorrow. Grin
Good luck OP.

ashmts · 27/02/2021 22:38

Don't listen to your friend! If she doesn't want to go in the crate don't force her. Sleep near her (we slept on the couch with her on us for the first few days, she was very needy) and take her out every time she wakes. We got our puppy end of October (in Scotland) and were out overnight repeatedly in frost and howling gales. She coped fine. If yours is a tiny breed she might struggle more I suppose.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 27/02/2021 22:48

She has just had a lovely wee about 2 minutes after going out! What a star!!!!

pilates · 28/02/2021 07:09

How lovely 😊
Is she a miniature schnauzer?

blowinahoolie · 28/02/2021 07:46

Got our puppy in January so we have been out in very cold temperatures. That's just part of dog ownership. Wrap up warm!

Wolfiefan · 28/02/2021 09:19

Oh my. So sweet.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 28/02/2021 19:09

No accidents inside today AT ALL! So proud of her!

As we head for bedtime, can someone check have I got this right?

Keep her busy till she’s v tired, and has had a wee

Put her to bed in her crate in the kitchen leaving doors open

Go to bed myself

Get up 3 ish and take her for a wee

Go back to bed and get up as normal (6:45)

Is that right? I feel odd about leaving her unsupervised.
