Have hijacked another thread but it needs its own really..

I have a collie.

Its always said these dogs need a job, they need mental stimulation/brain games and this will leave the collie calm and satisfied.

This isn’t the case for mine!

When I try and do some training she gets super excited and rapidly goes through all the tricks she knows.
Although she is very clever I have to be very careful training her because if I don’t give her the treat (because she hasn’t done what was desired) she gets annoyed and frustrated.

When it comes to games, again, she is very easily frustrated/stressed.
Take the commonly recommended asking for a stay, hiding a ball or treat (where can see) and release, she will run like a lunatic to the ball or treat, repeat a few times then no longer wants to search.
She just wants to be given the treats or play with the ball and will start whining and grumbling if I hide it.

I tried a game where you put food under cups and move them.
She selects the correct cup each time but after a few goes she starts getting cross, angrily bashing the cups sending them flying.
She’ll start crunching the cups if I continue.
She just wants to eat the treats, not find them under cups!

Or tidying up toys.
She will put the toy in the box then immediately take it back out and throw it at me for a game. For every single toy.
Dear god the rage if asked to just put them away in the box.
She grumbles/growls and whines and picks them up really angrily and literally throws them into the box.

Fetching objects; she knows what most things are.
Told you she was clever Wink
I can ask her to get me something or point at it if she doesn’t know it by name and she’ll do it once, possibly twice then the grumbling starts...

If something she wants is stuck, she’ll try a few times then stare at me, the object, me, the object until I get it for her.

She loves a walk and will walk/run for miles but so called ‘brain work’ seems to really piss her off..?

This was my collie, he would play fetch all day long if he could. He'd bring a stick and inch it closer and closer to your feet and look at you until you threw it.

I could hide a toy anywhere in the house and he'd find it. If he managed to escape out the front door while I was strapping the kids in the car he'd take himself off to the park for a walk.

He'd know my baby dd had woken up and go to her before I'd hear her on the monitor. I could say go left / right / straight on etc. on walks, I never needed to use a lead. He knew when I was upset and would jump up for a cuddle.

He died aged 14 almost 8 years ago and I was heartbroken and still miss him.

@Honeyhoops your boy is absolutely gorgeous and I recognise that imploring look of “throw it!”

My boy's ball obsessed. He likes playing find the toy/treat but he also loves his cuddles. I’m not sure he’s the brightest collie but he’s far from stupid (tonight when I was jokingly telling him off for pulling all the stuffing out of his toy he feigned a limp as he knows he gets sympathy when he’s hurt!)

@MrsAntiSocial it sounds like your girl is very switched on (with a little bit of impatience!)

Collies are the absolute best.

Honeyhoops · 07/02/2021 00:27

@CollieDug he was beautiful, I'm biased but he really was. They're such clever dogs, and def know when they're being naughty, mine once chewed a £20 note up and hid it under the rug 😂. He also ripped a mattress up and destroyed a fair few other things in his puppy chewing stage. Glad he grew out of that!

CollieDug · 07/02/2021 00:31

There is so much kindness in your Collie’s face - that is what I love about the breed - yes they’re working dogs but they just “get” their humans.

Here’s my boy. I completely love him.

Honeyhoops · 07/02/2021 00:36

Ah, he's gorgeous, is he quite young?

Totally agree with them just "getting" you. Mine almost kind of preempted me, like if I was about to get up of the sofa he was already up and moved from under my feet. He always knew when I was sad watching a film, it must be like a sixth sense. I love my cocker but I had a special bond with my collie.

Ours had a Scotch egg (left by the teen Confused) off the coffee table last night, waited until he thought there was no one watching, and snaffled it without even moving the plastic tray it was on.

When I raised my voice to say What the hell , WHAT is as far as I got, he absolutely made a bee line for his bed. Grin

He is nine and has turned into a right snaffler, DH and I were doing a quick blitz tidy up on Boxing Day and I said, blimey you hammered the cheese and biscuits after I went to bed, he replied, I never touched it.

He had done the lot, the cheese (and none of your Tesco stuff, we had gone all out this year) the crackers, and even the butter....

The dog slunk away without us saying a word. Grin

It was our own fault, we had left it there when the three of us went into the breakfast room to play Monopoly.

So whilst we were in the breakfast room being all nicey nice, he was in the room next to us, eliminating the cheese board like a stealth ninja. Grin

Honeyhoops · 07/02/2021 00:52

@FinallyFluid can't really blame him for the cheese incident, a full cheese board would be hard for anyone to resist! Mine was a food thief too. One night DH came home drunk and was sat with a full burger in his hand and he took it and ate it in one go, DH was devastated, I was pmsl.

FinallyFluid · 07/02/2021 01:06

Grin @ the burger.

Just shouted that through to DS in the next room, he shouted back if he ever does that all bets are off. Grin

Here's my little cutie waiting for me to come and play tug. He also goes through his repertoire of tricks when he gets excited or if he thinks he's about to get a treat OP 🤣 obsessed with his ball too!

Loving all the collie photos. How old is yours @CollieDug?

@LittleBoPeep95

He’s now 2 though was 1 in my attached pic. He’s not very food obsessed so is hard to train re tricks but his recall is good. He is such a big part of our family. I had been waiting for a dog for so many years and then just over a couple of years ago our working patterns changed which meant a dog was feasible (he is NOT a lockdown dog!).

We have a bigger issue with our cat stealing our food than the dog!

More collie pics please!

LittleBoPeep95 · 07/02/2021 14:02

Here's a couple more of mine. He absolutely loves swimming, if there's water nearby you can guarantee he will be straight in there! Also my Collie adores Dcat, they snuggle in together every night. The cat joins us for walks too!

Can we see a pic of your Collie OP? She sounds like a right little character Smile

Here she is.
She is usually found with an arm across one of the children.

Oh and she hates water!
She will step around puddles given the choice.

If her ball falls in she will try and fish it out with her paw, if that fails she’ll wade in maximum up to her arm pit and no more.
She’ll leave the ball rather than swim.

@MrsAntiSocial she is honestly stunning! Absolutely gorgeous. How old is she? I have 4 DC between 2 and 10, and my Collie is fantastic with them, he loves them to bits. People always ask if he rounds them up but he doesn't, lol. Mine steps over puddles too 🤔

Here he is as a pup

@MrsAntiSocial She's lovely, I'm loving all these pics, here's a few more of mine. He also loved water, although not as much as he loved sticks, just noticed as I've gone through my photo's over 70% feature a stick.

@LittleBoPeep95

The puppy pic is so cute, I've hardly any puppy photo's as I got him late 90s before I had a digital camera Sad

MrsAntiSocial · 07/02/2021 14:31

She is about 8 years old now.

And I don’t think I have any photos but yes she loves sticks too, the biggest one she can possibly find and trots along proudly with it dragging along the floor and her head cocked to the side as it’s so big 🤣

Anyone else's collie a lazy bastard?

She loves a good game but she likes to just slope off and sleep somewhere

LittleBoPeep95 · 07/02/2021 15:11

Where were those taken @CollieDug? Looks amazing. How old is your little fella? He is gorgeous

PseudoBadger · 07/02/2021 15:19

Here's mine. He's my third, and the most challenging. He's a right knob - but we love him.

LittleBoPeep95 · 07/02/2021 15:28

@PseudoBadger he is lovely!!! How old is he?

CollieDug · 07/02/2021 15:30

@LittleBoPeep95

Taken in Isle of Harris. My favourite place. And it’s pretty perfect for dogs too!
