Dog throwing up regularly

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 04/02/2021 15:09

Our 9yr old Yorkie has started throwing up 2/3 times a week plus she often has a very noisy stomach. Over the last few weeks we have cut out all human food/treats and now the only thing she eats is her kibbles and a winalot shape biscuit at bedtime. Over the years when she’s been ill we could always put it down to her eating something she shouldn’t have done off the floor (popcorn, a sausage or chunk of chicken) but now it is still happening with no reason. Her poos are completely normal though! Her sick is nearly always yellow and bubbly.

I wanted to give it a few weeks on the kibbles diet but I’m now going to book her an appointment at the vets. Anyone got any suggestions as to what it might be? I’m dreading the vets bill and I was hoping it would resolve itself. She hasn’t lost weight, still has an appetite and is as playful as ever.

I don’t know if it’s relevant but she has developed over the last few months a boil/cyst on her left side, it’s not connected to anything inside, you can get your fingers all round it and manipulate it. It’s less than a cm. Could be from me using the clippers on her, maybe caught her skin??

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like bile, I’d definitely follow through with a check up. Usually it’s harmless.
Dogs get lots of fatty lumps when they get older, my lab has a few and the vet /nurse just measures them every few months.
Hope she will be okSmile

Does she eat properly OP, at regular times?

One of my dogs is fed separately to the others because she quite often (about 3 times a week) won't eat her breakfast. She then vomits yellow bile. I was told it was because dog's stomach acid is really strong, and they produce this acid in anticipation of a meal, so if they don't eat, then the acid burns and so they're sick.

On the days she doesn't have her breakfast, I usually give her a probiotic tablet called Synbiotic D-C (daily capsule), I buy them online, and that's often enough to stop her vomiting.

Definitely get your wee one checked out first for peace of mind though. Hope she's OK.

I used to feed my dogs 'Bakers'. They always threw up. Perhaps a change of diet?

Starrylight · 05/02/2021 03:58

I have a yorkie the same age who also has a dodgy tummy. I don't give treats now, they stick to dry food and I've had to change that from the 'meaty' Bakers biscuits to the small dog mix. Anything else seems to set off the diahorrea and sickness. The only other food I'll feed them is plain pasta when they've been having a bout of illness. The bile is the same with our Ddog too. Potentially a yorkie thing? Confused

pomacentrus · 05/02/2021 07:19

My dog does this if its too long between meals.

We feed twice a day plus some of his kibble in a small kong as he goes to bed.

What times are you feeding?
Maybe go up to 3 meals a day if you're home at the moment?

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 05/02/2021 07:45

Thanks everyone. Her kibbles are in a bowl all day, she eats when she feels like it, we’ve always done this. She tells us when her bowl is empty and cries until it is refilled. She will then happily leave her bowl until the evening. I’m going to call the vets today.

I’ve got her an appointment for 4.40 today. I’m really hoping we are just prescribed a doggy antacid or something. Dreading the vet saying she needs blood tests, scans etc. Gonna cost a fortune!

Do you have pet insurance? It's definitely something to think about if vet fees are a concern for you

yourfaceisaforeignfood · 05/02/2021 13:04

Have you considered mild pancreatitis? It sounds quite like my westie when she gets a mild attack. When she is bringing up bile does she go into a 'praying position', with her backside up in the air while her front legs and head are lowered onto the floor?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 05/02/2021 13:18

Insurance won't help OP at this point, sadly.

All policies have a 14 day exclusion period and none will pay out for pre-existing conditions.

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 05/02/2021 13:19

@yourfaceisaforeignfood No she just heaves for about 5 seconds then vomits, standing as normal. We always know when she’s going to be sick as she takes herself to the bottom step of the stairs in the hall. My poor carpet!! I’m guessing the vet will suggest trying some medication to see if it calms her stomach down. I’m guessing with her being 9 there could be a few causes, but thankfully apart from when she is actually sick, she is not in any discomfort.

We had pet insurance when she was a puppy, but then just started to save that money into a savings account, ready for any emergencies. We had to pay out nearly £300 a few years ago as she needed dental treatment (common with yorkies). But that savings pot was very useful, hoping it’ll save the day again this time.

Yes I know that @sunflowersandbuttercups I meant in general as vet fees are more likely in older dogs so it would be better to get in place sooner at her than later

Ah, I misunderstood you, sorry!

Yes, I'd definitely suggest getting insurance in place for an older dog - they don't get any cheaper sadly!

LaurieFairyCake · 05/02/2021 13:31

My money is on she's gone off the kibble and is throwing up because she's not eating enough

Switch to Nutriment (duck is best) - it's a raw food and is great for terriers

I have a young Scottie and she was throwing up bile on kibble (Lily's kitchen) - I noticed she was forcing it down. Switched her to raw and she's happy as anything.

I do think terriers are good on raw. I can feed my other dog (Pug) anything and he thrives.

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 05/02/2021 15:30

That’s the thing @LaurieFairyCake Since lockdown last year, she seems to have had such a better appetite. Previously she would go more than a day without eating her food in the bowl and was quite happy with just her chews and random titbits. But now, she empties her bowl most days and happily grazes on it through the day, eating when she feels like it. She loves the kibbles. It’s a mystery!

My dog did this for a while was sick every other day for about 3 months then suddenly stopped. I wasn't too worried as he was his normal self apart from this

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 05/02/2021 18:10

Thank you everyone for your help and advice.

The vet checked her all over, emptied her very full anal glands and said she had nothing obviously wrong with her stomach. He is pretty confident that she is suffering heartburn so we’ve been given a course of antacid tablets!!! If this doesn’t help, in two weeks we will need more investigation involving blood tests. It cost £64 in total today, so that was a relief.

He also looked at her lump on her side, it was a sebaceous cyst which he popped and removed. So, all in all, a very successful trip! Just got my fingers crossed now that the antacids solve the issue.

Great news OP, sounds like she got her money's worth at the vet today!

Hope the tablets help. Give her a little nose kiss from me and my "mutley crew".

I’m glad it was nothing serious - it’s such a relief. And I hope she is feeling better soon.

Iwantmychairback · 06/02/2021 07:14

Perhaps discuss this with your vet before trying but.............
We had a dog who regularly did the same. Bringing up bile even though he was fed regularly. After several visits to the vet, one of them suggested we try worming him every month (sorry, can’t remember which wormer it was) I have no idea of the reason behind the suggestion, but it worked for him.

HaroldandGeorge · 02/04/2021 11:28

Hi I’m the OP. Just wanted to give an update in case anyone stumbles on this thread. Sadly, although my dog did perk up and stop vomiting for a few weeks, it moved to her bowels and she has been having diarrhoea and general depression. A visit to the vet has brought us the worst news possible. She has inoperable liver cancer, bacterial infection, anaemia and pancreatitis. The tumour is the size of a small football and it is basically squashing all other organs hence the sickness and diarrhoea. She was given fluids via an IV yesterday and we have brought her home for a few days to give her comfort and come to terms with the inevitable. The vet says she may only have days. She is in no pain but the growth is getting bigger and may rupture so we are seeing the vet again tomorrow to have discussions about putting her to sleep.

We are obviously devastated that this is the outcome. Thankfully it is a silent killer and she has had a full, happy life up until last week when the diarrhoea started to make her feel miserable. To see her ill for a drawn out period would have been much worse.

Sorry it wasn’t better news but I wanted to update the thread for future searches.
