Day in a life of your dog?

CityDweller · 01/02/2021 21:50

Can you experienced dog owners give me a sense of a regular day-in-a-life of your dog (grown dog, not puppy)? DH is suddenly getting cold feet about our plans to get a dog and I think having an idea of a grown dog's daily routine would help put his mind at rest that we won't have to be entertaining/ walking a dog from 7am to 7pm the way we do the DC

So, what does your dog do all day?!

Walk that is

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 01/02/2021 22:38

When not in lockdown my neice will come over a couple times a week and do additional midweek walks.
We are lucky that if we have days out he can go to my mums or mil so he has company
All though prior to this dh work full time although part wfh and I was part time so he is used to be left and has never had an issue with it

wibblewombat · 01/02/2021 22:43

We have a puppy. We watch pup 24/7 as he's still at the chewing stage. He mostly cycles through sleep & trying to play or chew.

Like all babies, play, eat, sleep. Plus poo...

Two spaniels aged 11.

5-5.30am run upstairs steal soft toys from kids and grab a cuddle on the duvet with whoever is offering.
6-6.30am wee and breakfast.
6.30-8am nap on sofa in front of stove.
8.30am school/preschool drop off. 1hr of walking, fuss and play on route there and back.
9.30am snooze in front of stove.
11am up for a kong or raw bone depending on weather.
1pm nap.
2pm leave for walk and pick up kids.
3-4pm home
4.15pm dinner
They mooch about until 6pm, bedtime stories with younger then older kids and then spend their entire evening and night on sofa in the lounge in front of the stove.

10.30-11pm bedtime wee and biccy .
It varies slightly in lockdown with kids in and not in school.
Weekends are longer walks and play, canoeing in summer.
As soon as the morning and evening’s get lighter we go for earlier and later walks with snoozes in the sunny spots outside with intermittent pond watching.

They used to go to work with DH and I in their younger years and before dc but only occasionally now. No need now as I am usually home and too many thefts.

Lurcher X Saluki (rescue) 3 years old.

Get woken u labour 7am and allowed into the best place in the entire world: human bed. Snuggle under the duvet and kick surrounding humans for more space. Dream about running and kick my feet some more. Finally accept it's time to get up 9.30am. stretch and yawn a bit.

Cry whilst mom's in the shower because now I'm up I want to get going and DO THINGS

Have breakfast and demand to go straight outside for a wee/poo. Run around the garden like a lunatic, jump the small fence into the vegetable garden and dig for no reason whatsoever.

Trail muddy footprints around the conservatory until mom can cajole me into the shower. Have my feet washed: 0/10.
Have a mouthful more of food and instantly demand to go back outside again.
Run around like a loon and come back in with muddy feet.
Stand in the shower having my feet washed whilst mom swears at me and threatens me with being returned to dogs trust if I get.my feet muddy one more time.

Beg for moms breakfast.
Chew on my bone
Grab mom's socks as she's trying to put them on so we can go for a walk.
Have a nice walk but no running which is bad (can't be trusted off lead around other dogs)
Have my feet washed again
Chew my bone
Sit next to mom whilst she eats lunch and cry pathetically as she does so in case it works. (It doesn't)
Snooze
Go in my crate for a few hours whilst mom goes to work. It's my safe place where I can't chew everything they love and I have the radio on for company and big duvet to myself so I'll sleep for a few hours.
Dad's home so I'm super excited and do my best to knock him flying as he goes up the stairs to get changed.
Chew my bone
WALK WALK WALK
Home from my walk and it was cold despite my coat so now I'm going to find the comfiest bed for a snooze.
Sleep until I heard mom come home and make dinner. Beg for dinner. Pace to go out whilst they watch their favourite show and refuse to settle during the important bits.
Go for a wee, have my feet cleaned : 0/10
Spin around in my bed a few times before deciding, no, only a human bed will do.
Sleep: 11/10
Get woken up at 11pm to go back to my crate to spend the night.

Moral of the story, don't get a Saluki cross if you want any kind of peace and/or sanity Grin
Although she does sleep a lot to be fair.

SirenSays · 02/02/2021 00:43

Six year old staffie X.
6am wake up for cudes then to be let out and go for a walk.
10am we play brain games for dental stick and treats
1pm I set up his bubble machine and he chases them until he's ready to nap
4pm we play some physical games like tuggy rope and refresh training
5pm dinner time.
8pm more training practice and play time
11pm long run at the park

He's recovering from surgery on his foot so at the minute there's no playtime/walks. Instead it's just me begging him to please calm down 364838 times a day

CoffeethenCrochet · 02/02/2021 00:46

Our dog is 2.

Usually wakes up about 9am (has been known to sleep until 11am on weekends)

Garden for morning wee/poop

Breakfast usually 9-10am

Day activities consist of following me around (including laying on bathroom floor while I shower Hmm) chasing the hoover, woofing at the postman eating the post napping in her bed while I catch up on emails. Play a game of tug or throwing tennis ball at some point with her. But she could happily not have playtime and sleep more.

Walk either in lunchtime or end of the day for 30minutes to an hour. Usually longer at weekends when we have more time.

Dinner at 6pm

Spends the evening on the sofa between DH and I. She then tells us it's bedtime at 10pm to be let out in the garden for last wee/poop.

Occasionally she wakes us to go out at 3am for a wee Hmm but considering she sleeps in til 11am on weekends we're ok with this now and then, and much prefer it to weeing inside!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 02/02/2021 01:13

Four year old husky:

Sleeps all night in the hallway outside our bedroom and comes in around 6.30 and climbs on the bed.

When we wake up he may go outside for a wee or stay put with whoever's turn it is to be brought a drink.

When we get up he goes out into the garden and has a mooch around, comes back in and sits on his spot on his sofa. Through the day he will play with the puppy, take himself outside to our secure garden and come back in.

When I prepare his tea he follows me around the kitchen and talks to me as I get it ready then dances to his spot and sits to wait for the command to eat.

When it gets dark he likes to go out and patrol the garden for cats (chases them away) and hedgehogs (picks them up very carefully and brings them indoors).

At bed time he has his treats (very strict routine that has to be followed or he won't go to bed.) Then he goes outside and stands on the doorstep for 10 minutes.

After he has taken the air and ensured that there are no cats or hedgehogs he comes in and sits on the first stair. My husband has to squeeze past him and kiss his nose. Then he will trot off to the bedroom, jump on the bed and wait for his last treats. When he has those he jumps off the bed and settles down on the floor.

He is always ready to go for a walk when its offered. He loves visitors (do you remember what those were?) and when our daughter came home from University at Christmas he sat on her lap all evening.

The retriever cross (10) is very much the same but doesn't come onto the bed and hangs back to follow us downstairs. He doesn't come into the kitchen when I do the tea but instead sits in the hallway and waits for his bowl.

The puppy just chases them both and keeps them under control.

Yesbutisittouching · 02/02/2021 03:28

Leonberger here, nearly 4.

Wakes up whenever we do (which is good at the weekend). As a guardian breed he is on ‘alert’ all night so generally knackered especially if there have been foxes trying to wander around. If it’s raining he knows not to get excited, no walk is happening (he takes 2 hours to blow dry with a blaster if he gets soaked 🤣). Gets excited if dog walking clothes are put on by the humans.

Walk - usually 3-5k - week days this is early depending on work, weekends any time. This can take aaaages as obviously everything en route must be sniffed and scent marked 🙄 or I have to answer Eleventy billion questions every 10 yards by someone who has never seen a Leo before.

Home. Leonbergers like a cold hard floor to sleep on. The only one suitable in the house is in the porch. He likes the door closed for his sleep.

1.30pm onwards, he likes a fuss, then the inner front door opened then some lunch (500g raw mince beef) which he may or may not eat. Sleep with door open. If there is dinner prep or lunch prep he’ll come and lie in the kitchen but not if the UFH is on.

5.00pm wanders through to ask for chicken/more water. Between 5 and 9 he guards the front door and he’ll ‘ask’ for varying amounts of raw chicken/veg. If there are foxes around and it’s winter I’ll give him a bone around 7.30/8 to distract him from being annoyed/destroying even more the front door trying to get out to chase them (in the summer the doors are open so he just takes himself out and doesn’t need his feet wiped afterwards) he might fancy a bit of fuss.

Bed when we go. He has the run of the downstairs but generally guards the front door.

Obviously all of this is a compromise with a Leo - what they want is to be outdoors in the cold all day chasing any intruders away (squirrels are ignored but he particularly dislikes crows/pheasants/foxes/rabbits/cats)

Pros - one good walk a day knackers him out otherwise he’ll whinge (Leonbergers are extremely stubborn and have the whining capacity of a toddler so won’t give in until you do what they want). Not needy dogs. Not greedy dogs (no bin diving) but They’ll do anything for a bit of ham. Can be left alone during the day (providing he’s had a walk)

Cons - not the breed if you want a cuddly dog (too big for the sofa) and they don’t like being hot. They are also giant Velcro’s - so a walk in the woods results in the woods being stuck in their coats. Need to keep on top of their coat. Their size means they accidentally destroy everything in their wake with their tail/body. They can reach anything on a table/kitchen island without jumping up.

Girlintheframe · 02/02/2021 06:37

Our dog is 3 this year and from the gun dog group.

Typical days is

Up whenever we're up.
Straight on the bed for cuddles
Breakfast (varies between 6-8) depending on getting up time.
More cuddles
Will chill out for a bit on the bed or under the office desk
Play
Walk (usually about 5/6 miles)
Back for a snooze/chill
Playtime
Dinner around 5.30
Hover whilst we make our dinner, just in case!
More snoozing/chilling
Playtime
Out for a quick 20 mins around the block.
More cuddles
Supper
Bed around 9.30-10.30

These are the days he's home. Other days he goes to daycare. Weekends/days off longer walks

makingmyway10 · 02/02/2021 07:01

18 month old lab. Gets up when we do 6am in the week and 8-9 at weekend. Pleased to see us but more so at weekends as breakfast is late!
Goes straight out for a wee
Back in for breakfast
Then goes back to bed for a nap
As DH currently working from home she spends the day with him in the study sleeping or watching the squirrels and birds out the french windows occasionally she will get thrown out the study for interrupting an important call to tell him loudly about the birds, squirrels, postman etc
Pootles about kitchen with me checking to see if I have lit the fire yet
One of us takes her out in the garden for a game of ball at some point
Afternoon time means a walk!!! Usually gone for an hour to an hour and a half at weekends and at weekends walks might happen in the morning!
After a walk it’s time for a denti stick and a long nap.
Late afternoon it’s time for a game of ball again and a potter in the garden
5.30 it’s DINNER TIME!! The most exciting event of the day.
Then it’s time to settle in front of the fire and play with toys or nap until 9.30 when she wants to go to bed and get annoyed if we aren’t ready to go yet. Hard stares, sighing and nudging.10 pm she gives up and goes to bed anyway

In the Summer it all changes, most of her day is spent pottering and sleeping in the garden and walks tend to be early morning before it gets too hot or early evening after work.

She is quite chilled for 18 months Smile

sunflowersandbuttercups · 02/02/2021 07:14

Ours is three.

Up with DH at six for toilet, back to bed.
Gets up with me at 8.30 or so.
Walkies at 9.30 for at least an hour.
Back home for breakfast.
Sleep.
Wake up when I eat lunch in the hopes some might fall in his mouth.
Sleep.
Dinner at 3pm. Eats his then hangs around hoping he can eat the cats' food as well.
Sleep/mope around waiting for DH to get home.
Hang around hopefully to steal our dinner.
Cuddles on the sofa.
Last wee around 10.30pm. Bed.

MaryIsA · 02/02/2021 07:58

Cockerpoo, year old.

Sleeps till we are both Downstairs for breakfast about 7.30

She’ll pop outside for a wee and a poo

Back to sleep till breakfast over, then immediately under your feet with a toy looking for a play for 10 minutes or so.

Snuffle mat while husband sets himself up to wfh

She sleeps till about 11.30 when in laws pick her up to go for a walk, usually 2 with a sleep in between and after. Glen and a beach.

Dropped back home about 5 , bit of a play.

Sometimes she gets an evenin* sniffy walk with us but mostly she’s asleep and takes herself off to bed about 9,30.

Weekends long walk with us.

Blubell281 · 02/02/2021 08:04

Having a puppy reminded me very much of when dc were little, it felt like the same kind of impact on the household and on my time however, they obviously go through the stages far quicker but you will have a challenging 12-18 months.

Our pup is now 17 months. He's a working cocker cross terrier and I was warned he'd be a high energy handful. We manage him just fine though. This is is routine:

6am-up with dh (he would sleep longer) 20-30 minute walk around the block

6.30-7.30 get under the duvet with me and goes back to sleep

7.30-9 potters about with us all as we get ready for the day

9-12 sleeps in kitchen

Mid day walk for around 40 mins usually along the canal for lots of sniffs

Home for more pottering, bird watching, cat harassing

3-5 sleeps

5-7 more pottering, ball chasing, kids play with him,

7- final walk around the block and then he sleeps in the living room while we watch TV, sometimes wants his ball throwing, sometimes just crashes out.

10ish, out for a wee in back garden and bed.

9 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Wakes me at 7.30am with dramatic yawns. Ushered out for ablutions immediately (although she has probably had me up twice in the night due to sounds in the garden that must be investigated immediately). Breakfast followed by a dental stick. Stares at me while I eat. Morning snooze. Bark menacingly at the postman who she also loves. Bark at any delivery drivers. Gentle play with a ball and a game of tug and war. Brief walk (she has elbow dysplasia so can’t walk for too long). Snooze. Hides from me in the garden so I have to go and find her. Steal anything that is possibly edible. Cuddle on lap and possibly a snooze on lap. Game of snatch (I have to pretend to grab a toy from her mouth while she runs about). Dinner. Maybe some farting. Watch me eat. Settles at 7.30 for her bedtime.

bluebluezoo · 02/02/2021 09:11

4 year old yorkie.

7am get up. Wee. Come in for a treat. Go back out for a poo. Another treat (toilet training was a struggle and he hasn’t worked out he can wee and poo in the same trip)

Go back to bed. Couple of hours nap.

Then his day is pretty much pottering. Looking under the kitchen cabinets for mice, bit of a play with his toys, trying to get the cat to play. Barking at passing dogs/cats/delivery people.

He doesn’t really have meal times, he tends to eat when someone else does, including the cat. He has biscuits down all the time, and has a tiny bit of wet food in the evening.

Bothers people for a while in the early evening, trying to persuade them to give him treats or stealing things so we will chase him.

Walks are very weather dependent. In the summer I leave the door open and he goes mousing under the deck with the cat.

About 8 he curls up on my knee and dozes. Usually ready for bed about 10. Last wee, then he’s upstairs and in bed before we’ve locked up.
