Off the back of the talking dogs thread I thought it might be quite interesting to see how much our dogs know.

17 month old terrier/cocker Cross

-his name
-sit
-down
-wait
-off
-go pee
-onto your chair
-excuse me (and he moves out of the way of the door/gate)
-ds name
-dh name
-go find
-whats this? (On a walk and he comes for a treat)
-leave it
-drop
-walk

So 15 in total. I'm hoping he'll pick up more as he gets older.

BiteyShark · 19/01/2021 16:26

I like the fact that BiteyDog gets so frustrated sometimes waiting for treats that he goes through the whole list of tricks in one go without me asking Grin

My pug knows Dinner

He's very clever but just couldn't give a shit in anything else

ShotgunShack · 19/01/2021 17:03

Lab mix

He knows both verbal commands and hand signals. We taught him loads when he was a pup to keep his brain active. He’s extremely smart and needs lots to do!

Wait
Go back
Down
Up
Under (crawl)
Speak
Finish
Leave it
No
Dinner
Walk
Out
Bed
Fetch
Heel
Paw
Seek
Get busy (do a wee!)

Good boy

Hand signals:

Roll over

sparechange · 19/01/2021 17:03

Working Labs; 7&1

sit, down, paw, come, wait, stay, drop it, give, heel, go pee, on your bed

Over - cross the road
Hold - pick that up
Leave - leave that alone
The names of about 8 toys - "hold teddy/duck/bone/kong"
go eat - I make them wait for the command when they get fed
Leads on - come back to me and sit down because the walk is over
Get on - run off and play
Back up - go backwards
tuck in - walk behind me (for narrow pavements etc)
Find (DH or DC name)
Up Up - jump up (soft, boot of the car)

And silly ones:
High five, paw, other paw, twirl, spin, 'who is a meerkat' (begging!), peekaboo (paw over eyes), rollover, let's dance, cuddle time, downward dog,

The puppy has got about half of them, and is nowhere near as smart as the older dog.
The older one would 'get' something after 4 or 5 times. The puppy loses her mind when she knows there are treats, so can't concentrate and therefore takes forever to learn something. We are getting there... She is just an angsty soft thing

sparechange · 19/01/2021 17:06

Oh, and 'don't you fucking dare' - I will be displeased if you belly flop into that muddy puddle Grin

CarolEffingBaskin · 19/01/2021 17:50

Ddog is 8 weeks old, and today we seem to have nailed "sit." She also knows her name, and at the moment she responds to "come" if she wants to! Grin

We're working on "down" as well as trying to firm "sit."

Pickles89 · 19/01/2021 18:47

She's a Border Collie so she doesn't just respond to simple commands, but picks up your meaning from generally talking to her. For example you can say 'A car's coming' and she knows this means she has to get in at the hedge and sit down until it's passed, or you can exclaim 'I've lost my keys!' and she'll go and find them. By saying 'Where's mine?!' or 'I want one too!' after she's given someone else a hand nudge or a kiss she knows to come and give you one too. If I do give her a basic command and she doesn't respond first time because she was distracted by something interesting, I can say 'Um, what did I ask you to do?!' and she'll do it, and she knows 'I'll be cross if you woof!' means she needs to stay quiet (if strangled throat growls at the neighborhood foxes count at staying quiet!). Actually though, bless her, she is a bit of a thicko as collies go - our last you could give a whole string of instructions to - 'Go and find your ball and take it to the stile, and when I get there you can jump it. Then lie down and wait for me' sort of thing. She is a lovely dog though.

Anyway, to answer the question!

Simple commands:

Sit
Stay
Stand and stay
Wait
Come here
Go to X
Lie down
High 5
Big 10s
Bow
Put it in the basket
Bring it to my hand
Put it on the chair
Pick it up
Find X (all of us by name, our hats, gloves, keys, wallets, phones and any of her toys)
Do a wee/poo
Have a drink
Go in your bed
Go on your mat (she does get this mixed up with her bed sometimes)
Shake (water droplets out of fur)
Nudge (my hand with her nose)
Kiss
You can go (after counting, sometimes up to 30. I'm sure she would go longer but doesn't seem fair to make her wait!)
In at the side/on the left/on the right/you can cross (the road)
Come/go through (a stile or gap of some kind)
Jump over
Be quiet
Weave (in and out of legs)
Drop it (or 'Thank you!')
Look at me (makes eye contact)

Other words and phrases she knows the meaning of:

Beach
Walk
Car
Biscuit
Dinner
Are you hungry/thirsty?
Water
Footpath
Stile
Treat/liver/chicken/cheese/Something nice
Birthday/Christmas/Present (she gets new toys wrapped up whenever we have any, spoiled rotten as she is!)
Let's go in the water! (Sea or river)
Vet
Lead on/off
Home
Play
Toys

Plus all the usual 'Clever/good/brave/special/naughty/Oh dear!' type things.

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of any right now. She's a precious Love-Bug, my girl. Mentally and physically exhausting though!!

Pickles89 · 19/01/2021 18:50

@Sitdowncupoftea

It's cool you have a 'working' husky! Are you in the UK? If so, how...?

Sevensilverrings · 19/01/2021 18:58

Shut the door.
Shut the kitchen door
Chickens
Alpacas
Dinner
Have a drink
Walk
Heel
Lead
Sit
Lie down
Paw
Stand
Belly
Cheese
Fridge
Clean it up
Leave it
Hold there
Car
Boot
Vet
Names of the kids
Names of me and DH
Cat
Off the bird
Point!
Side of road
Here
Now!
Drop it
Bring it
Fetch it
Soft mouth (she’s a bird dog, but we don’t hunt, works for when she is bringing so,etching so she doesn’t leave teethe marks)
Jump up
Jump over
Quiet
Stop talking (pointers are noisy)
Off the couch
Come back
Swim
No digging
Wait (as in don’t eat that thing in front of you until I say)

Much of this is to do with tone of voice, and she sometimes needs the hand signal to go with it if she’s excited or reluctant.

13 yr old GSP. We are going to say goodbye to her soon, she has cancer, but she still runs like a greyhound, jumps like a horse and points like a statue. She also intrinsically knows how to treat people gently, and when they need her. She will go and stand next to the kids when we are cross with them for something and glare at us. She was such hard work as a pup, but she’s such a good dog. We are going to miss her.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 19/01/2021 19:19

@sparechange

'who's a meercat'

Best command ever - I'm stealing this Grin

Ellmau · 19/01/2021 19:34

I used to know a DDog who knew Cheese and also Fromage, which owner was trying to use as a code to stop him getting over excited.

HappyThursdays · 19/01/2021 20:01

How sad @Sevensilverrings - she sounds absolutely gorgeous x

Darklylookingdeeply · 19/01/2021 21:05

Standard dachshund, 11 weeks:

Sit
Come here
No
Fetch
Wait
A release command
Food
His name

All taught in the week and 2 days we’ve had him. He is a clever sausage but I am dreading his puberty..... he is already taking liberties because the husband isn’t consistent....

Gregisadreamboat · 19/01/2021 21:14

Also, working on:

Drop it
Leave it

hiredandsqueak · 19/01/2021 21:25

Wait,
Get down, (off the sofa/bed)

I would love her to learn Quiet but she is steadfastly refusing all my efforts.

Chasingsquirrels · 19/01/2021 21:29
