Off the back of the talking dogs thread I thought it might be quite interesting to see how much our dogs know.

17 month old terrier/cocker Cross

-his name
-sit
-down
-wait
-off
-go pee
-onto your chair
-excuse me (and he moves out of the way of the door/gate)
-ds name
-dh name
-go find
-whats this? (On a walk and he comes for a treat)
-leave it
-drop
-walk

So 15 in total. I'm hoping he'll pick up more as he gets older.

Oh, I forgot mouth - as in open your mouth, to give him tablets

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/01/2021 22:50

My 18 month old terrier cross seems to understand most of what I say these days 😆

Commands;
Sit
Wait
Down
Up
Roll over
Bang (play dead)
Spin/around (depending on which way he circles)
Leave
Drop
Paw
Touch (his nose to my hand)
Busy busy (do a wee)

He also understands 'find' and will look for whatever toy or person I've asked him to find (usually gets it right!)

He knows our names, the cats name, grandmas name, his name.

He understands dinner, biscuits (kibble) treats and water.

My dogs a genius tbh 😉

our 8 year old Shetland sheepdog follows more commands but the 11 year old was a rescue but has picked up a lot of words- they listen and put the action together. First time I blew a dog whistle the youngest dog came straight in from the garden and went into a sit- I gave him a treat and he has done it ever since. Only takes a couple of times and food to teach him something. He can also problem solve and use his paws as hands to unwrap/ move objects etc.he can find any member of family- even ones that don’t live with us- just say find and then the name. He was taught British sign language signs at the same time as I said them as my son is deaf- so he knows the BSL for sit-stay-down-come-ball-play.
Can’t think of others at the moment 😂 there are quite a list

@tabulahrasa my Last dog was a rottie, so intelligent aren't they! So sorry yours was PTS so young, how heartbreaking :(

billybagpuss · 19/01/2021 07:24

@MrsFluffyMuff how did you teach crawl, billypup is just too enthusiastic every time I’ve tried that one.

MrsFluffyMuff · 19/01/2021 07:27

After he was in the lie down position I would lure him forwards with a treat, holding the treat slightly out of reach in front of his face. At first he would get rewarded by moving foward a couple of millimetres, then centimetres, then inches etc. And then once he knew what I wanted I added the voice command :)

Thank you, yes that’s how I’ve been trying but she’s just way too excitable every time we’ve tried.
MaryLennoxsScowl · 19/01/2021 14:37

1.5-y-o cocker spaniel:

His name
Sit/lie down/paw/other paw/stay/stand/settle/bed/ear (to look in ears)/teeth/free (release cue)/watch
Roll over/dance (spin on hind legs)/bang/touch/weave/up/off/carry/reverse/digging/nice kisses (instead of nibbling you when he was a puppy)
Come/heel/wait/what’s this/this way/lead (to have lead put on)/leave/drop (he can do the last two when you’re doling out the treat/toy, but if it’s food he’s found on the ground then he’s mysteriously deaf)/ready/go get it
Go find/where’s + DH/me/family/dogs he knows/toys by name or just ‘find it’
Go wee-wees
Go play
Good boy/yes/no/bad dog
Treat/chicken/toy/dinner
Squirrel (with accompanying squirrel noises)
... at least. He taught himself some of these!

Nohomeschoolingtoday · 19/01/2021 14:40

Spaniel 3 years old - knows majority of commands above. Not so good with the give command - especially with socks in her mouth!
We’ve also taught her hand signals - so she knows when she’s out on a walk off lead to keep an eye on us - so I can get her to return, sit & release. Saves me screaming across a field!

Eloisedublin123 · 19/01/2021 14:43

Wow your dogs are much smarter than mine!

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 19/01/2021 14:49

Sit

Bed

Walk
Play dead
Roll over
Ah Ah (no or stop doing something)
Dry paws (this is SO useful)
Find it
Stick
Ball
Give

umpteennamechanges · 19/01/2021 15:26

Wanders in as a cat owner.

My cats know:

  • Name
  • Other cats names
  • Breakfast (time for food)
  • High five (give a high five in return for a snack. No snack = no chance)
  • Off
  • No
  • Come on (with hand pat = come here/jump up)

This is fairly accomplished for cats! Grin

umpteennamechanges · 19/01/2021 15:29

What about general sounds and looks?

My cats are like fucking land sharks when it comes to taking the lid off a yoghurt pot. They even hear it from outside when the double glazed windows are closed!

They also know the sound of their food cupboard in the Utility room being opened.

I also think they know things like 'good boy/girl' (although they don't give a fuck, you can't use this to train them like you can with a dog, it's a treat or zero compliance if they don't want to do it).

Also things like 'Are you Mummy's handsome boy?' said in a certain way - they know it means love/snuggle time.

tabulahrasa · 19/01/2021 15:50

@MrsFluffyMuff yeah, elbow dysplasia and a whole load of other longterm issues - such a shame

I’ve fostered a rottie as well recently, similar health issues... so it really puts me off getting another tbh, but I do love them - it’s that combination of being so clever and easy to train, but also complete numpties, lol

Cats - hah!

My cat, well we think she knows her name... but, how can you ever really tell when half the time they ignore you on purpose? Rofl

DD tried to clicker train her for a while, what ended up happening was the cat went and started shoving the clicker when she wanted DD to give her a treat to get DD to click it... so I’m pretty sure the cat trained DD instead...

oneglassandpuzzled · 19/01/2021 16:17

Rare-ish breed terrier (a bit identifying as not many around).
She is ten.

Still thinks sit and lie are interchangeable and does one or other of them. Thinks you are being picky if you challenge her on this.

Will raise a paw on command if she knows you have a treat. Not otherwise.

Knows name.

Understands 'Go touch' and recall is good because she is quite greedy and knows she has to touch a hand to get the treat.

I do blush for her at times. She is the fourth of the breed we have had and none of them have been natural learners. They were bred for generations to do their own thing: chase vermin at will, mainly,
