Puppy is a big stinky. Gorgeous but smelly

Help! My dog is a bit whiffy. He's almost 9 months. Patterdale cross border terrier little thing. But he whiffs. He's been to groomer for a bath but smells again but quickly smells again. Are some breeds just smellier than others? What can I bath him with? Got some puppy shampoo but he smells more or less the same after bathing Confusedwhen I do it.
Any recommendations? Thank you!

Yes some breeds are smelliest than others. We have a basset hound he reeks. You can get body mists and deodorants for dogs personally we have not bothered

YouBoughtMeAWall · 17/01/2021 12:13

Could it be his bum/anal glands

polkadotpjs · 17/01/2021 12:17

Don't think it's his bum as it's just a "doggy" smell but quite strong. The lounge though hoovered, beds washed, sofa throws washed , really whiffs. Good job we can't have visitors !

I have a patterdale x JRT and he hardly smells at all , goes to the groomers every 4 weeks and gets wiped off with a baby water wipe after walks . The only time he’s been noticeably smelly it was his anal glands . I think food is supposed to affect how they smell @polkadotpjs so what do you feed him ?

polkadotpjs · 17/01/2021 12:38

He eats food from Butternut, so a high quality food. Maybe I'll try baby wiping him too. It could be I'm hypersensitive to it having not had a dog for years too. I'm like a sniffer dog myself currently. Sniffing all blankets etc and they don't smell, yet a doggy odour permeates the air....

Diet makes a huge difference. Just because he has a high quality food, that doesn't mean it agrees with him. If something's bothering his digestive system, that will affect his odour.

Also, does he get wet when you go out? Try to keep him as dry as possible (waterproof coat?), and get him a dressing gown for when he comes in. Sounds ridiculous, but actually a really good idea to prevent wet dog fur directly contacting your soft furnishings.

I vowed when I got my dog that she would never have clothes. 'How ridiculous', I said. But she shivers when it's cold, and she stinks up/messies the furniture when she gets grubby and wet. She has more clothes than me.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 17/01/2021 12:49

I had a Patterdale cross, she could be a bit smelly (especially when she rolled in fox shit) but I switched her to grain free food and it helped massively.

She did have very wirey fur though so we had to also be sure we had towelled her off well or the damp smell was awful.

Happenchance · 17/01/2021 13:26

Has he had a recent health check? Skin conditions can make a dog smell.

polkadotpjs · 17/01/2021 14:15

I'll look into another food and message the folks at butternut to see if any recipe changes might help.
I'll ask the groomer too to honestly rate him in the stinky scales as maybe we gave hyper sensitive noses too.
A coat would be good actually as we go out all weathers and he often gets soggy. He's got a dressing gown thing but would be great if he didn't get so wet. Any coat recommendations?

Equafleece , they do lots of different types of coat , jumper and suit , we have quite a variety and they wash and wear really well .

m0therofdragons · 17/01/2021 15:33

We were advised not to use any shampoos and minimal baths as they strip natural oils and make smell worse. Food can also make a difference. I’ve read that raw food helps. We’ve just moved onto raw but pup isn’t smelly so can’t really compare that.

vanillandhoney · 17/01/2021 17:09

I've always found border terriers to be quite smelly dogs Blush

I do think small, low-to-the-ground dogs get smelly and muddy very easily - do you dry him off properly after a bath and make sure you hose him down after a walk to get rid of all the mud and muck he collects?

Equafleece do very good coats.

Think this is prob true re shampoo. Anecdotal but we hardly ever bath our retriever and he smells pleasantly doggy if you get in close and I have been told our house doesn’t smell doggy (by people who clearly expected it to Grin). Maybe just luck. But I think it could be like covering up bad smells with crap air freshener - just makes it worse.

Those Equafleece coats look great - does anyone use them with a harness? Sorry if that’s a stupid question!

Getitdonesharpish · 17/01/2021 19:15

Our Lab gets bathed loads at the moment. It is so muddy out there. I can’t see how a bath is any different to a swim and she will swim everyday in summer. We don’t use shampoo at all.

I do! You can just pop the harness on over the top no problem :)

I very rarely bath my dog unless she's rolled in something smelly and she never smells unpleasant.

If I put my nose of her and have a sniff, which I quite often do, she just smells of warmth, clean dog and me: hand cream mostly.

She's small, long coated and low to the ground and loves mud, so after walks at this time of year I rinse her legs, paws and tummy with a flannel and warm water.

I do brush her regularly though, which keeps her coat and skin healthy and clean; I've been told by my vet that she has a very healthy coat and skin.

HappyThursdays · 17/01/2021 19:53

We shove ours in his Ruff and Tumble coat after walks. We had a real problem with smell (he's a cocker who dives into every muddy pond/puddle then dives head first into horse poo) and the fact that it dries him so quickly seems to head off the smell then we just wash the coat and dry brush any remaining mud off him. Has made a massive difference.

You may also be super sensitive to the smell. I'm pretty sure we are now immune to dog smell Blush

Girlintheframe · 18/01/2021 06:10

Could it be due to his age and hormones?
Our dog definitely appeared to get smellier around the teen age.

Sostenueto · 18/01/2021 06:25

My dog is white yet spotless. She has daily wipe down with sensitive baby wipes her paws and tummy are cleaned Everytime she goes for a walk ( runs in fields and beach) using Alie vera puppy shampoo and she is fed chicken and rice ( fresh cooked each day due to very sensitive tummy) and she it my house has no ' doggy' smell at all. Every month she has full shower then fleaed a d wormed.
Change diet, make sure thoroughly cleaned after walks and watch where u take for walks and visit vets because it could be skin condition.

Eckhart · 18/01/2021 17:58

Are you meant to de flea and worm them that often, @Sostenueto?

Funf · 18/01/2021 18:04

Food?
We used Burns Penland farm wet with the matching dry mixed in she hardly smells but is usually muddy

Frenchdressing · 18/01/2021 18:51

Our dog smells. Smells biscuity. Think it’s just her smell.

LightDrizzle · 18/01/2021 19:00

I’ve had three dogs, all smooth coated. Two were just naturally dog-smelly, my last one particularly so.
Using scented shampoos and baby wipes is not advised. I think it’s just something you have to live with once you have eliminated any medical or dietary issues.

Yes you are supposed to flea and worn them monthly if like us you have them from the vets. My dog has tablet form for both as is allergic to the liquid form.
