Puppy is a big stinky. Gorgeous but smelly

Help! My dog is a bit whiffy. He's almost 9 months. Patterdale cross border terrier little thing. But he whiffs. He's been to groomer for a bath but smells again but quickly smells again. Are some breeds just smellier than others? What can I bath him with? Got some puppy shampoo but he smells more or less the same after bathing Confusedwhen I do it.
Any recommendations? Thank you!

I'll get him a coat to stop quite as much filth. He's due the ✂️ shortly so maybe he just smells in sympathy with my teen Grin

A photo please OP! He sounds fab!

Yes @Canteloupe33. I put a harness over persistentpup's Equafleece . It's larger than his normal harness but it's fine. He runs freely wearing both and literally needs a paw wash / wipe after being in this awful mud that is everywhere.

addicted2spaniels · 22/01/2021 20:24

I've got 2 spaniels and they just stink all winter. They get a rinse off in a warm sink of water after a walk each time .... and I shampoo probably once a month with Animology Fox Poo shampoo. It's conditioning and gets rid of all odours, not just the dreaded fox poo.

With mine, it's their feet that pong the worst!

You have my sympathy. Like you I have a very sensitive nose. I used to have a male Cocker Spaniel who never smelt, but my brother has recently moved in with us and his Bedlington Terrier has a really doggy smell. It's driving me nuts and I would be so embarrassed if anyone called at the moment.

Reckon a lot is luck of the draw. We are on our second dog of same breed/colour/sex. The first had a lovely, faintly biscuity smell, despite hardly ever having a bath. Current ddog absolutely honks of wet dog, bit of a hormonal whiff. Always has, despite any bathing/spray/brushing. But we still love her 😀

I don’t like “dressing” my dog either, but needs must.
She has an equifleece, which is brilliant, but the harness goes over that. She’s not comfortable, with the harness over it, walking on lead. We haven’t been able to work out what it is that makes her uncomfortable. She does wear it at home to go out in the garden etc. without the harness and it works well, keeps her dry.

To keep her dry walking on lead, we found that doodlebone does a step in harness that fits under one of their coats. She seems much more comfortable. It’s different fabric and design to the equifleece but still keeps her mostly warm and dry. I think doodlebone would fit a patterdale.

Yeah I reckon it's a "teenage dirtbag" smell I'm afraid! Our boys were always a bit more whiffy until they got castrated, and I always thought their coats felt more oily beforehand too.

I use Superfine Baby Powder Cologne on my dogs between baths. I buy it from Technogroom, sorry I can't link. Just one squirt of that makes a real difference - it is like a spray talc though I suppose, so it can leave a bit of a residue on their coats if they're not bathed regularly. Smells gorgeous though.

And I'm another one who uses the Equafleece suits, absolutely brilliant and so cute!

One of our Yorkies was very smelly and greasy for a while. Turned out to be a fungal infection and antifungal shampoo cleared her right up! She had weekly baths, and then she was blowdried and afterwards she trotted around tossing her head to say "I'm so gorgeous".

Wallywobbles · 22/01/2021 22:19

Check the folds around his mouth. Are cocker puppy bloody stank. It took us years to find the source. He ended up have to have an operation to remove them.

userxx · 22/01/2021 22:33

@vanillandhoney

I've always found border terriers to be quite smelly dogs Blush

I do think small, low-to-the-ground dogs get smelly and muddy very easily - do you dry him off properly after a bath and make sure you hose him down after a walk to get rid of all the mud and muck he collects?

Equafleece do very good coats.

You're not wrong. I live with one and he's a smelly little fucker, I keep eyeing up the febreze thinking one blast won't hurt him.

Photo as he is indeed fab - here he's just found out it's raining and walk time and looking disgruntled Grin

I would get him checked for a fungal infection or an infection of his hair follicles. Specialist shampoo will do the trick but you need to know what you're dealing with.

Juanbablo · 23/01/2021 18:07

We have a JRT and he doesn't smell. He is bathed every few months. I do wash his bed every few weeks.

polkadotpjs · 25/01/2021 10:33

He's at the vets in a few days for the ✂️ so will ask him to check his fur. I don't think he's so bad but I almost need a line up of dogs to cross check with !
