Picking up puppy

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 04/01/2021 21:30

I'm now completely confused as to how to pick up our puppy (end of this month), after today's lockdown announcement. I assume DEFRA will update their website in due course. Any ideas as to what the rules will be?

PS: no I'm not just picking up a lockdown puppy. This is the culmination of a process that has taken longer than a year, and it's not just some random breeder I chose off the internet. So it's not a last minute lockdown decision to get a pup.

Bookmarking- in the same position. Due to pick pup up early Feb. Resigned to not visiting her before then.

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 21:49

In the other lockdowns the breeder has to deliver the puppy (as it their business) to the new owners

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 21:50

CSFG will publish guidelines on their website in a few days

Sparrow91 · 04/01/2021 22:04

I’m in the exact same position - puppy due to be picked up on Monday!! Really worried if it’s postponed for too long he will be past a suitable window for getting him trained and with the least damage in terms of taking him from mum :(

The breeder is a first time (and only time) breeder and they have 7 puppies going to homes all over the country. Not really sure it’s appropriate or viable for them to travel to us!

bungleZippy12 · 04/01/2021 22:11

Another one in the same position here! Due to collect our long awaited puppy in less than 2 weeks. It’s hard not to feel anxious about what will happen! My breeder explained a few weeks back, when I asked what would happen if we went into lockdown, that he would have to keep hold of the puppies a while longer. Noooooooo

😭
I really don't want to miss the window of socialisation, or miss out on a day of puppy cuddles!

In the same boat here! Our breeder said last lockdown he drove around the country to get people their puppies. Luckily we’re only an hour away so am hoping he’ll drive to us, although it isn’t ideal we won’t get to see the puppy’s mother etc in person. Very worrying though for people further away from their puppy :(

Derbee · 04/01/2021 23:16

We collected our puppy last week, in Tier 4. We couldn’t meet him before, but the breeder said that DEFRA had advised that as it is for animal welfare, puppy collection was allowed. Not sure about this new lockdown compared to Tier 4

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 04/01/2021 23:54

Yes we would have been able to collect under Tier 4. Suspect this new thing will have different rules. :(

We used a puppy taxi last lockdown. It was far cheaper than hauling the kids all the way and feeding them and fuelling the car. Puppy was in a safe and comfy cage and was played relaxing music all the way down.he arrived so happy. 'Taxi' was clean safe and efficient. Defra assured.it was much better for the puppy

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 05/01/2021 06:50

The Kennel Club posted updated advice during the first lockdown so that's another source of guidance.

Sparrow91 · 05/01/2021 09:50

I’ve looked here but can’t find updated guidance, so I’ve emailed APHA to confirm.. will let you know if I get a response!

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 05/01/2021 11:30

Thanks! Yes they updated it till the last few developments, so am assuming there will be an update to the DEFRA guidance in the next few days.

PollyRoulson · 05/01/2021 11:32

It will be fine (if your breeder is compliant).

Puppies have been allowed to be delivered to new owners by breeders in all of the previous lockdowns and this has been documented in the CSFG guidance.

All dog organisations base their advice on this KC included.

Just give them a few days to get it written up (again!)

blowinahoolie · 05/01/2021 14:47

Our breeder has to deliver the puppy, we will get her this week. Best not to travel due to lockdown. Breeder has a legitimate reason to come to you, not other way round.

Sparrow91 · 05/01/2021 18:32

@ZombiesAreClammyDodgers I’ve had a response now:

“**Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email dated 05/01/2021.

After last night’s announcement, England is now in a new national lockdown. Therefore, you must only leave your home if you have a reasonable excuse.

Picking up a puppy/kitten/dog/cat is deemed non-essential and cannot occur at this time. It is the responsibility of the current owner (breeder/rescue centre) to ensure the welfare of the animal until it is legal for you to collect the animal. Alternatively, licensed pet transporters can continue to operate and may deliver the animal to you. The APHA is not liable for any additional costs you may incur.

Due to the new lockdown, we are waiting for updated government guidance in regard to pet businesses (breeders/rescue centres) delivering animals to you.

Further updates should become available via these pages in the near future (please check the date of the last update found near the top of the page – this must be 04/01/2021 or later):
•www.cfsg.org.uk/coronavirus/ - when opening the documents please ensure the date is recent. The current guidance was updated 24/12/2020 and does NOT take into account the new lockdown. We expect these documents to be updated soon.

The APHA cannot offer exemptions to the travel regulations.

Not the news I wanted to hear for sure, looks like I’ll be getting a puppy taxi sorted!

blowinahoolie · 05/01/2021 18:52

In this instance, I am inclined to agree with Polly. Sorry.

TopBants · 05/01/2021 18:58

@ZombiesAreClammyDodgers

😭 I really don't want to miss the window of socialisation, or miss out on a day of puppy cuddles!
Surely from a socialisation perspective, staying with the litter longer would be better, as the puppy will remain with other dogs and the breeders are people as much as you are? And can't the breeder start on training them if necessary?

I don't see a reason to fret tbh. Can't see how it would damage the dog to be with the litter longer.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 05/01/2021 19:04

@Sparrow91 thank you! As suspected, but at least now we know.

OP posts:
ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 05/01/2021 19:07

@TopBants I haven't spoken with them yet- was responding to someone below who said their breeder said they'd hold on to them for longer.
I'd rather like the process of gelling with us to start asap so pet transporter it is for us. The point of getting a pup was that. I already have an adult rescue and obviously the process of socialisation for him was different.

OP posts:
AlwaysLatte · 05/01/2021 19:13

Animal care is still allowed, so presumably as you are adopting it that would be ok, because otherwise it would be homeless?

AlwaysLatte · 05/01/2021 19:15

Oh, even better if breeder can deliver. Enjoy your puppy. Exciting and you'll have time for extra walkies 😀

blowinahoolie · 05/01/2021 19:40

Ours arrives from the breeder tomorrow. Very excited! She will be 12/13 weeks old. Perfect age for leaving her litter mates. Any longer then it might be difficult for her to settle at nights with us in her new home.

Good luck with new puppy Zombies and Sparrows.

Sparrow91 · 05/01/2021 19:56

Thanks everyone!

The breeder can’t deliver with 7 puppies! It’s just not feasible to leave them on their own while each one is delivered. Not take all 7 at one go for Mums well-being.

We’ve had £65 quoted for a pet taxi so I think we’ll go for that, but we’ve also asked the breeder if he can get his vaccine/chip any quicker too so it gives us time to possibly settle him in better over the weekend. Just really hope our pup settles okay in the pet taxi!
