Picking up puppy

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 04/01/2021 21:30

I'm now completely confused as to how to pick up our puppy (end of this month), after today's lockdown announcement. I assume DEFRA will update their website in due course. Any ideas as to what the rules will be?

PS: no I'm not just picking up a lockdown puppy. This is the culmination of a process that has taken longer than a year, and it's not just some random breeder I chose off the internet. So it's not a last minute lockdown decision to get a pup.

How do I find a pet taxi??

PollyRoulson · 05/01/2021 20:09

@ZombiesAreClammyDodgers have you spoken to your breeder?

How far away are they from you? It really is their responsibility and usually if they are not prepared to deliver it is for them to sort out the pet courier.

Sparrow91 · 05/01/2021 20:24

@Maybenexttime08 I literally just googled ‘pet taxi area’ and then contacted a few - I did make sure they were all legit and registered/insured etc too.

Maybenexttime08 · 05/01/2021 20:37

@Sparrow91 Thanks - ours needs to travel from Bristol to West Sussex! Will start my search as meant to be collecting on 18th!

Breeder doesn't need to take all 7 puppies to their new homes all in one day...they can stagger the drop offs to each family. Our breeder has organised it in such a way only a few leave at a time. She had a litter of 13 to find homes for!

vanillandhoney · 06/01/2021 14:36

The breeder can’t deliver with 7 puppies! It’s just not feasible to leave them on their own while each one is delivered. Not take all 7 at one go for Mums well-being.

If he really can't deliver himself, he needs to organise a pet taxi or courier service fore everyone.

PollyRoulson · 06/01/2021 15:29

No Need For Pet Taxis the updated guidelines are out!

GOOD NEWS!

from csfg (for England)

"Purchasers are not allowed to visit a litter in person to view a puppy or kitten with their mother in its home environment and so some virtual means of allowing potential
purchasers to view is necessary. Puppies and kittens that are ready to be rehomed should be delivered to their new owners by the breeder by appointment providing the
handover can be performed using the business handover protocol set out by CFSG. Where this may not be possible and exceptionally it is considered reasonably necessary
for welfare reasons, they may be collected. In these circumstances the collection should be by appointment only and the handover must take place outside using the protocol and maintaining social distance and in compliance with other safety precautions.

When a pet is delivered, handover should take place in an outdoorspace large enough for the breeder/transporter and purchaser to maintain their social distance (2m should
be adhered to) using the handover protocol. Whilst it is desirable to give an item of bedding with a kitten or puppy care must be taken to ensure there is no potential for transfer of virus."

The new advice as I umderstand it says it is preferred if the breeder delivers but if not you can collect your puppy yourself

Ahh it’s too late for us! We’ve now arranged a pet taxi!! What a farce too considering the email I had yesterday!

On the plus side, he is now coming home today!

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 06/01/2021 16:31

If we are able to collect the puppy that will save me a LOT of money. I will take a copy of this notice with me in case questioned!

Sparrow91 · 07/01/2021 10:19

@Maybenexttime08 tbh it only ended up costing us £65! We were really pleased with the service and would actually use them again.

@ZombiesAreClammyDodgers yes, Crash is currently sleeping on my legs and had a relatively good night! Just need to get him to pee outside now, but he just shakes and shakes whenever I take him out :(

If you google ‘DEFRA approved pet transport’ you will find plenty of companies. This is the first on the list when I googled, @Maybenexttime08,

pets4transport.co.uk/

I think they are national.

Sparrow91 · 07/01/2021 15:38

It was a company called Hounds 2 Hooves, I’m based in Leicestershire.

@ZombiesAreClammyDodgers he’s a whippet! 😁
