Inspired by the style and beauty board but for us dog walkers looking for inspiration to update their footwear/clothing.

So maybe we could have a what did you wear on your last dog walk perhaps bargains/anything you have your eye on.

I'll start- just wrestled off some very old trusty Ugg wellies bought as a gift years ago but thinking it would be better to have some ankle wellies. I'm coveting some joules wellibobs but will more likely purchase some mountain warehouse ones as more budget friendly.

Lockdown has me looking pretty scruffy but not sure I can be motivated to change right now so hoping I can steal some ideas. Probably looking for more comfort ideas rather than style but it would be nice to have both.

Great idea! I`m not in the UK, but I love the idea for the thread.

For dogwalking I almost always wear my LL Bean boots, I got them years ago back when they still had their lifetime guarantee and they still look good as new. They weren`t cheap, but they are my all time best buy, and the cost per use is the best bargain I have ever had. They are so comfy, have excellent grip and are waterproof, I can hike all day in them and not feel it.

In winter I always wear a black Lands End down coat which is comfy, warm, waterproof and has lots of pockets including internal ones for phone, keys etc. With slim fit jeans (with thermals underneath if its very cold), and snow boots.
In Spring/Autumn I have a LL Bean khaki coloured utility gilet with loads of pockets which I wear over a long sleeve shirt/jumper with jeans and my Bean boots.
In summer various I have various navy, black and khaki fitted linen long sleeve shirts (I roll my sleeves up) with 7/8ths jeans (or roll mine up a bit) and boat shoes or my Bean boots if its wet or chilly.

I never wear hats or hoods dogwalking as there is a disproportionate amount of irresponsible dog owners here/people who think the leash laws don`t apply to them, and I like to have as much warning of their approach as possible.

My casual wardrobe consists mostly of black (which is the colour which suits me best), navy and khaki with blue or grey slim fit jeans. Not exactly the height of fashion, but smart enough and it works for me Grin

InsertRudeWord · 03/01/2021 22:19

I have some wonderful lined Aigle boots abut also wear leather walking boots. Summer - trainers or Country boots.

@PoleToPole which Landsend coat do you have that is also waterproof?

StillMedusa · 03/01/2021 22:31

Ariat Langdale leather wellyboots. Cost way too much but I live in them , and can even wear them to work if I can be bothered to chip the mud off Grin I have skinny legs and they actually fit without looking baggy.

Jeans, uniqlo thermal top and a jumper over for most of the year. Light shirt if it's actully summery!

I have a variety of dog walking coats. A long Regatta waterproof one for really dire weather, a nice fleece lined Craghoppers for not-pouring-down weather and a knackered old Barbour for spring/autumn.

A really stupid aussie style (but crushes up) leather bushman's hat for rain as when I'm wearing glasses I can't see in the rain. Woolly bobble hat if it's just cold!

I'd really like some nice waterproof trousers but don't like the plastic-y type that rustle as they freak out my dog!

I work in Special Ed so never need to look that smart so live in jeans most of the time, plus I'm always sporting dog hair!

foxredlab · 03/01/2021 22:50

Ooh some lovely brands to google and maybe peruse EBay to try my luck Smile

For summer I'm also dreaming of allbirds trainers as they are waterproof but much prefer to slip on and go so don't think I could spend that.

Actually in summer I mostly live in my crocs for a quick walk (style death I know!!)

@InsertRudeWord I have the Women`s Expedition Waterproof Down Parka. I got mine couple of years ago, but they still do it and its brilliant, stands up to mud, dog claws, DC and everything else. I shove mine through the washer and tumble dryer on low heat too and it comes up beautifully

foxredlab if ticks weren`t such an issue here I would live in crocs in summer too Grin

StillMedusa · 04/01/2021 00:41

I might be wearing crocs right now Grin but only in the house...

InsertRudeWord · 04/01/2021 01:06

Thanks @PoleToPole

Scattyhattie · 04/01/2021 09:53

I have Craghoppers Airedale waterproof trousers that aren't noisy & have kept me dry in torrential rain. I think the new kiwi pro range is also waterproof. Most of year I wear jeans or kiwi trousers as light, stretchy and dry quicker. I have some ecco gortex trainers , zamberlan walking boots or neoprene wellies depending on mud/cold level, my dog can be a dick so any footwear needs good grip on wet grass.

Lands end squall winter coat which is warm & has loads of pockets. I team with LE primaloft packable jacket under if need extra warmth but I freeze easily. Seasalt mac summer which has big hood & not as sweaty as technical coat.

Floralnomad · 04/01/2021 10:11

I wear Woof wear short yard boots , have used them for a couple of years now and they are excellent and very comfortable . When the mud gets really deep I use Dublin river boots which are also very comfortable .

Scattyhattie · 04/01/2021 10:17

I'd like suggestions for any sweatshirts/hoodies/tops that repel dog hair, type that seems to embed itself into everything? It will be for home/dog walking wardrobe so I don't care much about style just less yeti than in current fleeces.

Dmutt has short, single coat but sheds like a lab so can't avoid getting covered anytime he's near. My greyhounds shed fine, silky hairs which seem to stay on surface and be easier to remove. I have separate going out wardrobe to try keep presentable.

GhostPepperTears · 04/01/2021 10:18

I'll join. I realised this morning that at least 50% of my wardrobe has navigated towards walking the dog in all weathers. I have virtually no smart stuff left!

Anyway on my feet in winter are some Muck Boot Derwents. Comfy, water proof, stretchy to go over my thick calves - but not very stylish or graceful looking! When it's not quite so muddy, I have random Salomon walking boots hanging around. I have tried other brand but always come back to Salomen in the end. Even in the summer I prefer walking boots as I tend to be scrambling through undergrowth most of the time (the "benefits" of a reactive dog), but am thinking this year I might look for something a bit more lightweight.

Trousers are amost always skinny jeans but for epecially long walks I do dig out the Kiwi Classics - though some recent weight loss mean they are starting to look like clown trousers so I am eyeing up some Acais. I am also open to recommendation for thick leggings that stay up!

I have too many coats but my main faves are both from Trespass. A Bella II which is a soft, short jacket and a 'everyday padded jacket' which is longer and has a furry hood. I do also have a big padded Lands End coat which served me wonderfully the year before last during a winter holiday in the Highlands - but is now too big for me so has had to retire :(

HappyThursdays · 04/01/2021 10:59

I wear those neoprene lined Aigle wellies - I couldn't be without them! I have a very old pair of Merrell trail running shoes for 'normal' walks.

I have walking trousers from Mountain Warehouse with a lot of pockets (walking puppy and needing treats Grin) and then I normally wear a gilet rather than a full coat as I get too warm. I have lined (v lightly lined) waterproof trousers from Mountain Warehouse too which don't crinkle and weren't v expensive.

vanillandhoney · 04/01/2021 11:15

@StillMedusa have you tried all-in-one waterproof trousers as opposed to overtrousers?

Craghoppers sell them and so do Rohan.

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 13:02

Trousers are always Acai. They are waterproof and mud just seems to roll of them.

Can't get on with wellies at all so always in walking boots. Sadly I have several pair so they get hosed off left to dry and wear another pair until they are dry. Walking boots drying on radiators is a cool accessory right?

I am always warm so only need a rain coat so usually a patagnia or north face jacket.

Sadly I wear a lot of fleeces and hoodies - yep so stylish .

I do not wear hats but do get cold ears so tend to wear ear bags - blimey it just gets worse.

But my dogs love me........

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 13:04

Those that wear wellies are any non slippy? I have tried Aigle, Hunters in the 80's were fab now they are rubbish Muckboots are soooo slippery

50shadesoflunacy · 04/01/2021 13:08

Oops, I thought this was for prettying up our Pups! 🤣

HappyThursdays · 04/01/2021 13:22

@PollyRoulson the Aigle walking ones are really grippy (they are called Aigle walking boots) but I agree most aren't and it's my biggest complaint of any shoe/boot I wear (especially with a strong dog who likes to pull!)

FlowerPig · 04/01/2021 13:30

My year round walking shoes are Adidas Terrex R2 Mid. Very lightweight, comfy, hardy, good grip and waterproof. Couldn't believe the difference in them from previous boots I've had.

I rarely wear my wellies as they feel like they weigh a tonne but that's probably the brand/style I got (balmoral Hunter). Good grip but a definite leg workout picking those up with each step!!

foxredlab · 04/01/2021 13:35

@50shadesoflunacy I bet there are some pups who are more stylish than me!

Thanks all for your contributions loads of ideas and it's also convinced me to go for quality over a bargain. I have no issue with doing that for anyone else but when it comes to me I have typical mum guilt. I have some Christmas money burning a hole so think I'll get myself some nice walking boots thanks again

I've got a very untrendy but very warm and dry hunting jacket (made by I think Sherwood Forest). It has loads of pockets and internal cuffs up the sleeves and mine is on its fourth winter and still going strong. Khaki already so doesn't show the dirt, bramble-resistant and worth every penny of the approx £130 I spent on it. I've also got a Ryedale long waterproof coat which is great for serious downpours if I don't fancy putting on overtrousers.

On my feet either wellies (Mole Country Store, £35 and last about 18 months of regular wear - basically daily Oct-March inclusive and other times when wet), walking boots (when cold or out a long time), waterproof trainers or if v hot Birkenstocks. I have a pair of hand-knitted socks that compensate for the lack of insulation in the wellies.

Legs normally in jeans or cords, but if out for a serious dog-training session in wet or cold weather, something wind- and waterproof.

I look like nothing on earth, but I'm past caring. So long as I am dry and warm, I'm happy.

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 14:04

@Happyhursdays thank you I will have a look at the aigle walking boots.

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 14:04

sorry no idea where the T went Blush

GhostPepperTears · 04/01/2021 14:48

I do not wear hats but do get cold ears so tend to wear ear bags - blimey it just gets worse.

I did not know ear bags were a thing. I laughed so loud! Grin

BaublesAndBawbags · 04/01/2021 15:18

Love my neoprene Le Chameaus (Chameaux?) with the zip - worth it for not having to hop around trying to squash my chunky calves into/peel them out of boots in the rain.

Currently looking to replace a 3 yr old Berghaus parka with a tricky zip that's finally gone on strike. I had a Didrikson for a few years which was toasty but got left in the garage by accident one winter and the mice moved into its cosy layers. (grooo). What's the current Didrikson thinking? Always a hot topic on S&B.

My winter walking recommendation is Sweaty Betty fleece lined running tights. I bought a much-reduced sale pair during my last grim-faced C25K mission, just before I finally conceded that I HATE RUNNING, but they're so warm and cosy for cold weather dog walks.

Can anyone recommend some nice thin gloves that keep your fingers from freezing solid but still allow you to dispense treats/open poo bags?

PollyRoulson · 04/01/2021 16:38

and I wonder why friends and family do not want to come on walks with me......

I do have very long thick hair that luckily covers them (I hope)
