I just wondered as ours is completely perfect and I’ve loved the only other two I’ve known too!! I really wish I could meet more of this wonderful breed and would love to hear about others’ character and quirks .

Ours is very sporty and plunges through waves after sticks like an otter !
Makes me laugh when communicates as now and again has learnt to growl at the bathroom sink when wants to be picked up for a drink of WARM water (heaven forbid drinking it cold every time !)
Undemanding though and happy being on a lap or travelling all day , though would also walk all day if invited to
Very friendly - delays our postman most days as climbs into her arms
Extremely fast and fit (beats my friend’s bigger cocker spaniel) Which I didn’t expect
Talkative
Very good with free roaming chickens and small pets and learning new things like this . Hopeless with cats still though as hadn’t had exposure to learn from !

Yes, my vet!
She’s been trying to buy a puppy all year to no avail. She had one reserved from a litter that she’d scanned early in a pregnant bitch but unfortunately al, the pups were reabsorbed so she’s still waiting

VirtualLearning · 27/12/2020 14:02

Oh I’m so glad your vet loves them! And I hope finds one, they are very hard to find from a careful breeder and demand for all dogs seems so high at the moment.

Hovverry · 27/12/2020 21:10

I adore them, they have the perfect temperament but I won’t ever have another and feel strongly that they should not be bred or sold.
Cavaliers have perhaps the worst inherited health problems of any breed. Health checking the parents will not produce disease free puppies and most will have a short troubled life with huge vet bills for the owners.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 27/12/2020 21:14

I love them. Our adored little chap died earlier this year at the grand age of 14. We miss him every single day.

VirtualLearning · 27/12/2020 21:50

I’m so sorry you lost him and that is so hard after 14 years. I would love to know what you fed him as wonder if it helped, we feed Orijen kibble and add a lot of fresh food too. I also avoid routine flea chemicals as seen that Bravecto has caused a lot of adverse reaction I believe .

I’m grateful our DC are growing up with such a special dog as they seem pure goodness and love; and the other two I’ve known have lived to a healthy old age too and still happy.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 27/12/2020 22:06

We didn't feed him anything particularly special, to be honest! Wagg was his favourite, and he'd have some cooked meat whenever we had a roast. He had a lot of exercise - 3 walks a day, but not over-long hikes - I think little and often is the way to go. He did develop a heart murmur at 9 but it never progressed beyond grade two and he was active up until the last moment - he'd just got back from a walk and was waiting for his dinner, when he collapsed and died a few moments later in my husband's arms. We were lucky to have him for so many happy years.

Yours will be a wonderful companion for your DC. In all his 14 years, we never saw a moment's bad temper from our little chap. He was so gentle and was wonderful with our cats too (he knew his place and let them boss him around!).

Lairyfightzzzz · 27/12/2020 22:13

My mum's is 16 years old and still going. My grandmother's three lived til ages 14, 15 and 16 respectively.

VirtualLearning · 27/12/2020 22:16

It’s lovely he did so well and that’s so hard but touching he was in your husband’s arms. I love that he was so kind to the cats too. Ours is gentle with our neighbour’s chickens and they’ve even shared breakfast.

I have a cav cross breed no idea what he is crossed with! He was a rescue but we had him at 12 weeks. Woukd be interested to know what people think he might be crossed with. He has a cav temperament but chases squirrels like a terrier. Really short legs!

How adorable!! I wish I was more helpful at guessing his parents as that would be really interesting. I think I heard you can dna test but don’t know much about it.
Ours chases squirrels too

Perhaps he is crossed with a Jack Russell - a Jackalier/Cavajack?

I have two of these beauties, a ruby and a black & tan. They are 5 and 6 years old now, both in fine health. We keep them slim and feed them a raw diet. They are completely different personalities but both equally loving! We adore them and they are so good with our kids. Couldn’t ask for a better family dog ❤️

Gouldengirl9 · 28/12/2020 00:32

We have had 3 over the years.
Sandy a Ruby. Died after next door neighbour gave him a rib bone.
We bought a sofa with him in mind. He liked to sit beside me.
Brand and tobias brothers blenims.
Brand has a short trachea so didn't go for a walk breathless just getting to the end of the drive. Told by the vet to euthanase as he wouldn't live very long. He lived till he was 12.
Tobias is now on his own. He is his own man. Takes himself to bed when he has had enough. He gets on your knees when he wants but moans if you move. But if you leave the room he follows. Can't even have a pee in private. Only time he gets excited is when the grandchildren visit. He is 13 and we know he is on borrowed time.
Won't be getting another after seeing how cavies are now bred.
They are lovely dogs but prone to bad health. We have been lucky.
Even our adult children have cavies.

VirtualLearning · 28/12/2020 05:27

It is lovely to hear about other cavaliers . Although so sad the ones that have problems.
There is a Healthy Cavalier Facebook group who I’ve learnt a lot from and the breeder we then found had done several health tests before considering breeding, and gave us printed copies. A heart test from parents and grandparents from a cardiologist, eye certificate from an ophthalmologist , hip and patella score results , dna result for curly syndrome and episodic falling syndrome. These are said to be more important than a pedigree and Kc registration .

This is expensive to do (Although when I look at prices in a pandemic I can’t believe how lucky we were) and she cared so much for her dogs and the breed and I learnt a lot from her; it doesn’t guarantee anything but it can help.

Gouldengirl9 yours sound so special and it’s sweet Tobias loves the grandchildren ! It must have been so hard to lose Sandy early and am glad Brand did so well .

@2fallsagain wisdom panel for doggie dna test. How we found out what breeds our mutt is.

Sorry to derail. Doggie is lovely op

Tara336 · 28/12/2020 07:06

I have a cavalier/bichon he’s nearly 8 and my world revolves around him (he knows it too) he’s so gentle and loving, glued to my side all day but very stand offish with everyone else , he will run up to say hello but duck away if they try to pet him. He loves his walks and is very playful and has favourite people and dogs he likes to greet when we are out (mainly because the humans give him treats).

Two weeks ago he lost his site overnight, we rushed him to the emergency vets, he was kept in for the day and he was diagnosed with diabetes. We are (I am DH is too clumsy) injecting him with insulin twice a day now, I’ve had to overcome my needle aversion fast and find a way of getting DD to accept me doing it. I love the little guy and will do everything I can to keep him healthy (and by my side)

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/12/2020 07:15

Adore mine, love him more than any other dog we've ever had and he's amazing with my DD.

Out of curiosity I was looking at the prices of cav puppies, they've gone up threefold in the 5 years since we bought our KC reg pup. It makes me very nervous that there's some bad breeding going on.

2fallsagain · 28/12/2020 08:13

Tara mine is the same with other people. Glued to me, abut nervous of others. Sorry to hear about the diabetes.

Thanks for the DNA tip, think I will do that. We think he has maybe hack Russel and bichon but would love to know for sure.

I think (hope) it’s just the current climate. I’ve been looking at various breeds for about 5 years (was waiting for cat to go as she looked on last legs and we didn’t think it was fair so late in her life to introduce a puppy, she just kept going!) the breeds we were looking at were £300-£500 and now we are in the position they’re between £2k-£3.5k. It’s making me so cross, as I assume they’re taking advantage of everyone who is buying a puppy in lockdown. But I don’t know. Not sure we can justify that. Sad

P.S Sorry to derail - love King Charles... do they require lots of grooming/do they shed a lot? X

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/12/2020 08:57

My dog is half cavalier and she growls at the fridge at near enough exactly 4pm every day. 4pm is carrot time in our house. Bit like pre dinner cocktail hour.

If you ignore the growls she escalates to a full blown “whoo whoo whoo”.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 28/12/2020 09:24

I don't think they shed any more than other breeds but because their hair is long it's very noticeable. The long tummy hair, plumy tail and 'feathers' on their legs also picks up mud and seeds in the summer. Some people clip their coats short but I never wanted to do that as the long coat is so beautiful. They do need regular grooming and checking for mats which can form overnight.
