What do you add to kibble?

We've had dogs for twenty years and have always fed them kibble - each dog (mostly mixed breeds/rescues) has thrived and lived a long and happy life. We do however mix kibble with fresh vegetables (about 2:1 in ratio) with every meal, and we add frozen tripe and tinned sardines in oil once a week (on different days). For a treat we mix some wet food but that's a few times a year only.

We are keen to stick with kibble and our vet seems very happy with that. However I wanted to know if there are any additional foods that anyone else feeding kibble successfully adds to their dogs' diets. Eggs, yoghurt, fish, etc. I've read about multiple things you can add but wanted to hear first-hand experiences. Thank you.

Ours has kibble mixed with half a tin of Butchers, she thrives on it and is in great condition. About six months ago switched to the 'joints and coat' version of the tins.

Thank you. Do her 'gases' not smell worse on wet food? We noticed that whenever we feed ours wet food we could bottle their gas and sell it as a biological weapon...

Our two Lhaso Apso share a tin of meat in the morning and have kibble on the evening. On Sundays they have roasted meat in gravy. Guess what they like the best?

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 21/12/2020 18:59

Are you not worried about the salt in the gravy?

I don't think she is gassy at all, it's very rare that she is. Maybe we're just lucky, the ratio is 2:1 (kibble:tin) and we split one tin between two meals (basset hound).

My dog loves the occasional tinned tuna (in water) on his kibble.
Also he loves a boiled egg mashed in (although he does smell sometimes after egg!).
Sometimes I just make a gravy type thing with a spoonful of wet and some hot water on his kibble.
We also do some scatter feeding with his kibble. Or hide it round the house so he has to sniff it out. Makes it more fun at least.

wirldsgonemad · 21/12/2020 20:26

I always add something to kibble, it seems boring otherwise. I often buy a cooked chicken from Asda. It's about £4.50 and I carve bits off and add to kibble. That will last 4 or 5 days, otherwise tuna or ham, sometimes a bit of gravy.

Pipandmum · 21/12/2020 20:28

I add nothing. They do get occasional table scraps.

Theredjellybean · 21/12/2020 20:31

We add a mix of following : apples, carrots, natural yogurt, blueberries, peanut butter, marmite, honey.
The last two just a drizzle.
They also get leftovers from our food mixed in if its appropriate, do meat scraps, cheese bits, fish skins, eggs etc

Insertfunnyname · 21/12/2020 20:33

Oh my goodness, my dog says she'd like to move!!

We just do dry dog biscuits!

ginislife · 21/12/2020 20:38

I just do dry mix but occasionally in a Sunday they'll get a Sunday dinner mixed in - so roast and veg and gravy. They get titbits of meat or cheese in the week or a teeny bit of the end of a sandwich. They don't get sweet stuff.

Mrgrinch · 21/12/2020 20:38

I add scraps from whatever meat we have that day.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/12/2020 20:52

Us too, and also trimmings from cutting up meat for casseroles (not big bits of fat, but gristly bits).

Occasionally other bits and bobs if there's leftovers or something gone a bit over its use by date.

heydoggee · 21/12/2020 20:54

Mine has half a tin of Naturo with a handful of AATU kibble, morning and teatime. He looks great on it.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/12/2020 20:54

And leftover half cups of tea, but in a separate bowl not with the kibble. He's very fond of a cup of tea.Grin

ArcherDog · 21/12/2020 20:56

Usually just some warm water.
If I’m having gravy with my meal (Sunday roast) then I’ll pour a bit on his.

We do Canicross so after a run of more than 10miles he gets a tin of sardines added.

NaturalStudy · 21/12/2020 20:56

I sometimes chuck a whole egg on (still in the shell) which he loves, or tinned fish or natural yoghurt. I figure those are all good protein.

CandyLeBonBon · 21/12/2020 20:57

At Christmas she gets a bit of turkey and veg!

Panicmode1 · 21/12/2020 20:58

I'm feeling very mean -we don't add anything!! (Sometimes apples or carrots which she loves, but usually just plain!)

Riverhousepuppy · 21/12/2020 21:28

I add a bit of salmon oil daily to her kibble. I also boil chicken wings, big pack from tesco which are pretty cheap and then use all of it to boil into a stock, not adding salt or anything literally just the bones and meat, drain it and put in fridge and put small spoonful on each meal when heated in microwave for 30 seconds. She used to be super fussy but always eats her food now.
Occasionally she might get some tuna or sardines in there too but rarely

shitinmyhandsandclap · 21/12/2020 21:56

Ours has kibble mixed with a loaf type meat, morning and evening

ladybee28 · 21/12/2020 21:58

I cook a whole chicken and then put the meat in the whizzer so it's almost a powder. Goes a really long way that way.

@NaturalStudy I'm intrigued about the egg! No cut tongue situations on the shell?

Lots of wild animals eat birds' eggs, dogs will too given half the chance. Haven't you read Jemima Puddleduck? - and it's part of the reason dogs should be leashed on moors and coasts where there are ground nesting birds.

I've never tried mine with a whole egg- if I've got some left over from glazing pastry I'll scramble it in the microwave for him.

NaturalStudy · 21/12/2020 22:09

@ladybee28 no just happily chomps the lot. I assume it has calcium in it and is good for cleaning his teeth, but who knows.

MrsBtobe1208 · 21/12/2020 22:12

Our German Shepherd has egg shells, eggs, potato skins (she absolutely loves these), chicken, ham, lamb, vegetables, banana, strawberries, blueberries.

Not everyday but a few times a week ☺️
