What do you add to kibble?

We've had dogs for twenty years and have always fed them kibble - each dog (mostly mixed breeds/rescues) has thrived and lived a long and happy life. We do however mix kibble with fresh vegetables (about 2:1 in ratio) with every meal, and we add frozen tripe and tinned sardines in oil once a week (on different days). For a treat we mix some wet food but that's a few times a year only.

We are keen to stick with kibble and our vet seems very happy with that. However I wanted to know if there are any additional foods that anyone else feeding kibble successfully adds to their dogs' diets. Eggs, yoghurt, fish, etc. I've read about multiple things you can add but wanted to hear first-hand experiences. Thank you.

@Theredjellybean

We add a mix of following : apples, carrots, natural yogurt, blueberries, peanut butter, marmite, honey. The last two just a drizzle. They also get leftovers from our food mixed in if its appropriate, do meat scraps, cheese bits, fish skins, eggs etc
I thought peanut butter is bad for dogs.

Lots of pampered pooches. Mine mostly just gets dry kibble. At the weekend she gets the end bits of whatever roast we have had mixed in.

Shieldingending · 22/12/2020 05:51

Peanut butter is fine as long as it's 100% peanuts, no sweetener which is toxic to them. You can buy a £££ doggy version but Aldi sell one which only contains peanuts.

leafygarden42 · 22/12/2020 06:02

Don't add anything - never have done. First dog lived to 16 years old and second one going strong and seems a happy little soul.

leafygarden42 · 22/12/2020 06:03

Oh I should add - he does get 'treats' - little bone biscuits from Aldi - when out on a walk.

Frenchfancy · 22/12/2020 06:13

Just dog biscuits for Frenchpup . French dog used to be half wet half dry with whatever leftovers were around. We never did fruit, but she did like a bit of cucumber.

When did dry dog food/dog biscuits become kibble? Growing up they were always dog biscuits and now I use tge French croquettes. Is kibble a brand?

Allington · 22/12/2020 06:59

Nothing for DDog! She has liver cake as treats on walks for good recall, the crusts of DDs breakfast cheese on toast and any other bits and pieces she can scrounge... dog biscuits with peanut butter sometimes in her kong. Snuffle mat, scatter feeding, a ball she has to nudge around for the biscuits to drop out.

When she gets bored she trots purposefully round the house looking for things to get her teeth into - literally Grin

We always add vegetables or fruit - broccoli, carrot, green beans, peas, lettuce, blueberries, apple, watermelon, and if we have a bit of leftover meat then that too.

CarinaMarina · 22/12/2020 07:13

I was adding vegetables to my dog's kibble to liven it up for him, but wondered why he was doing soft poops 8 times a day - turns out I was overfeeding him with the additional fibre. Cut out the veg and he went down to 2 good solid poops virtually the next day.

Unfortunately he is currently on a prescription diet as the vet thinks he has "IBD brewing" - he vomited blood clots and lost weight over a couple of days, and that combined with my mention of frequent pooing to the vet has led to this conclusion. Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch, he was only vomiting for a day and has never had diarrhoea in his life (12 months old)...

But I'm not a vet, so.

Collidascope · 22/12/2020 07:22

A spoonful of peanut butter melted in the microwave, a boiled egg chopped up, or a few bits of bell pepper which he's crazy about for some reason.

Roodog · 22/12/2020 07:33

We feed dry kibble with wet food mixed in, twice a day. I am mindful of making sure our retired grey keeps to a healthy weight and has the right nutrients. He's had a small 'roast dinner' instead of his evening meal occasionally. I'd like to do eggs or tuna or sardines but then I worry that I'll mess up with the balance of ingredients, or might upset his tummy. Sausage is his high value reward when we're attempting training.

HmmSureJan · 22/12/2020 07:48

Half a tray of Lily's Kitchen or half a pouch of hi life. If I have cooked a chicken then I save some to mix in his food the next day. So boring for him without something extra.

BusterGonad · 22/12/2020 09:05

My GSD mix husky has I pouch of Royal Canin in the morning, a bowl of dry food (at all times) and then throughout the day I feed her my mix of rice, mince chicken or pork mixed with egg. Usually about 3 bowls of this a day. She also gets odds and ends of our food. She's certainly not fat and her coat is very shiny and soft.

@caringcarer

Our two Lhaso Apso share a tin of meat in the morning and have kibble on the evening. On Sundays they have roasted meat in gravy. Guess what they like the best?
The Sunday lunch? Wink
StillMedusa · 22/12/2020 17:44

Mine like a little sprinkle of grated cheese on hers or a bit of ham/chicken in the morning, and generally a bit of cooked mince (beef or lamb) in the evening! She spits out vegetables!

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 22/12/2020 20:11

Thank you for all the input. We don't give ours any leftovers (unless it's meat that has had nothing added to it) or foods usually meant for humans. But I'll try peanut butter (the safe kind).

@Riverhousepuppy where do you get salmon oil please? I'd like to try that.

Riverhousepuppy · 22/12/2020 22:01

Hello I have Pets purest fine salmon oil from amazon. I just put a squirt a day.
On the back of this thread I have cooked the chicken wings but added some veg in and then put it all in processor ( apart from bones) and added it to her dinner. She loved it :-)

SimplyRadishing · 22/12/2020 22:05

😳
ours gets nothing so exotic.

It's kibble and the odd dog biscuit.
We give her a whole raw egg on Saturdays and Sundays as a treat to distract her from our fry ups because my mum reckons it gives them shiny coats

DailyCandy · 22/12/2020 22:46

Meaty scraps from the table or pasta with whatever sauce it’s in...

justgeton · 22/12/2020 22:51

Usually nothing but if I make gravy (meat juices, veg water and flour, no added salt) I'll add some. I freeze it too, seems a waste not to

She eats raw carrots, sprouts and bits of cauliflower as well.

Literallynoidea · 22/12/2020 23:34

We add our leftovers eg today the dog had kibble plus a big of roast beef from the weekend plus carrots and broccoli.

I try not to do this all the time as I want the dog to eat kibble by itself. But it's satisfying to add to it.

Sparrowfeeder · 22/12/2020 23:39

Ours refuses to eat kibble, we mix it with wet food (forthglade or natura) and she sucks the meat off the kibble and spits it on the floor. She will only eat it if really hungry. She is not interested in human food (veggie household anyway). She is an ex Romanian Street dog so we are fine with spoiling her.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/12/2020 23:41

My lab has wet food mixed in, some days tiins of tuna and always left overs such as roast chicken, pasta, veg and rice

We are lucky as he has a very strong stomach and never had a problem with his bowels and he's a slim dog xx

Sparrowfeeder · 22/12/2020 23:41

She will also refuse most biscuity treats, only eating the jerky type ones. Refuses veg and anything sweet. Meat only, sadly, she’s definitely put herself on the Atkins diet.
