Will your dog be getting Christmas dinner?

Just that really? Am thinking of giving mine a scaled down version of ours (minus stuffing of course). So some turkey, potatoes, carrots etc. Is this a stupid idea.

Usually he just gets a bit of turkey sprinkled over his usual dinner but being completely honest - I’ve bought too much.

Our hound loves turkey, broccoli and sweet potato, he'll have a dinner, in his bowl at his meal time. He's only been with us a few weeks and deserves a treat. TBH when we had a roast yesterday he had a bit of leftovers.

Juanbablo · 21/12/2020 13:22

Of course! If we have a roast dinner, the dog gets a little bowl of meat and veg.

Peace43 · 23/12/2020 00:02

I have a marrow bone for mine for Xmas morning so we get enough peace to open presents before the walk!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 23/12/2020 20:08

@MrsTumbletap - apologies for the delay - we got it from Home Bargains - I think they still do them ;-)

Frenchdressing · 23/12/2020 20:12

Yes. Bit of turkey and veg.

GreenEyedDevil · 24/12/2020 17:12

Mine always get a Christmas dinner. They love turkey and vegetables. 😁

PugInTheHouse · 26/12/2020 09:32

I wish I had read this before yesterday. We gave pugpup a bit of turkey but that's it as I wasn't really sure. Didn't put gravy on it but did roll it in a tiny drop so it was dry for him, why is gravy not ok? No idea why as he has kibble every day lol. I didn't think they were allowed gammon for some reason? And to be honest wasnt sure re pots and veg.

Compared to kibble just turkey was exciting for him, he was shaking with excitement, he is only 12 weeks and we have been really strict even when eaten stuff hes allowed as we didn't want him to be begging for food when we are eating.

Frenchdressing · 26/12/2020 10:38

There’s loads of stuff dogs aren’t supposed to eat. I was surprised.

caringcarer · 26/12/2020 10:40

My 2 girls has sliced turkey and sliced beef with gravy on. The woofed it down. My 4 cats hot the same. They are part of our family of course they get a Xmas dinner.

HappyThursdays · 26/12/2020 10:41

Human gravy can have things like onions and garlic in which are big no nos for dogs and lots of salt too which isn't good for them

You can make their own gravy by just boiling the joint/bones with no added herbs/spices but things like carrots/pumpkins or just plain with nothing but water boiled etc.

VirtualLearning · 26/12/2020 23:24

I felt sorry for the dog getting carrot peel when all the others shared a proper lunch ! Ours had turkey, roast potato, carrot and cabbage.
We regularly top kibble up with an egg or sardines or fresh veg as I would hate to eat the same cereal all the time plus dogs’ life expectancies have shortened apparently since commercial food has become the norm. I’d rather feed ours more as my grandparents did

Frenchdressing · 27/12/2020 06:36

Yes. A dog behaviourist I spoke to said dogs need variety in their food. It does extend their lives. He said we also over exercise dogs which puts too much pressure on their joints.

A varied diet, a minimum of exercise appropriate to dog size plus lots of mental stimulation was the key to longevity. Interesting stuff.

Mine got chicken, beef, peas and carrots and wolfed the lot down!

We did have other stuff but I didn’t want to risk their stomachs setting off. No gravy apart from what was left on the chicken because it was very rich

Mol1628 · 27/12/2020 06:47

My dog gets an upset stomach just looking at different food it seems! So no. Didn’t want three days of diarrhoea!

Funf · 29/12/2020 10:33

Never, she has dog food, occasional dog treats and nothing else

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 29/12/2020 14:30

Ours got Turkey and carrots and was very appreciative. She love raw carrots too.
