I have had a little rescue cross breed for 2 years, she had a terribly abusive start in life and a result needs careful handling and ongoing training. It took months to gain her trust but once I had it she turned into a playful character who adores being hugged and stroked. She will tolerate me washing and brushing her but is wary of others. She hates going to the groomer so she goes to a lady who specialises in dogs who don't like grooming and has a brilliant reputation. This lady works hard to gain their trust.

My dog can be reactive if her paws are touched and can bare her teeth (not with me but with vets or the groomer) today when she was picked up the groomer said she initially had to use a muzzle for a few minutes while picking her up but removed it and she was then really well behaved. This is the first time she has had to do this and is the only thing out of the ordinary at all which is the only reason I have mentioned it.

When she returned home today she was like a different dog she was very docile and timid and spaced out. I thought she was a bit upset after being cut and left her for an hour to lie quietly. This is really unusual as she is a very bouncy playful character.

After an hour I tried to coax her off her bed with treats and then her dinner but she was totally withdrawn and refused both. She was starved when younger and drastically underweight when she arrived to live with me so has always been food obsessive. I have never known her to ever refuse a treat or food, she usually dances a crazy jig when any food is on offer.

She wont come to me and went to her upstairs bed a 6pm and refused to move, so much so that I have had to pick her up and carry her to the garden so she would go to the toilet.

She wont engage at all with her toys and is just looking at me from her bed. She wont come near me for a stroke or fuss and if I go to her and stroke her she is just starring into space.

This morning she is the same, she hasn't yet been to the toilet so I have called the vets to get an urgent appointment this afternoon at 4pm.

The only thing she has done is drink a little water but she vomited it straight back up. She also now seems to be having trouble walking and seems very un co-ordinated and spaced out and is struggling to walk.

At first I thought maybe she could be traumatised from the muzzle/getting cut but now I think illness is much more likely due to her continuing decline. She has not had her boosters due to the pandemic so I have kept her on lead and away from other dogs. I know she wouldn't get ill so quickly after being groomed so it is possible she picked something up a day or two ago and the stress of getting groomed has sent her into decline quicker.

Trying to keep calm until we can go to the vet but really worried.

Aww poor Elsa. Fingers crossed though that you have got her so far.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 14/12/2020 16:44

So not the best news but at least they are on top of it. Thank goodness for vets and vet nurses.

And she is allowed home which will settle the pair of you.

You have your work cut out over the next few days but it is what we do for our beasties.

Try to rest up in your down time. (If that makes sense!)

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 14/12/2020 17:29

It is a great vet practice. The senior vet only opened it a few years ago and it is actually a 24/7 mobile home service (pre covid). All minor things like health checks, initial consultations and vaccinations were usually done at your house but the pandemic means it is safer temporarily for you to go to them. They originally only had a small office and operating theatre but it has been so successful that they had expand the practice knocking through to the next door property.

They are also a huge help to a local rescue charity, in the past when a stray is injured and requires emergency surgery they have matched donations received to cover the cost. They also allow the charity to have an account so all animals rescued can have a health check/vaccinations/dental/spaying etc and the charity can pay over time when they have funds.

They were ringing us every few hours to keep us updated with Elsa over the weekend.

@SunburstsOrMarbleHalls oh poor Elsa and you. You sound like a super lovely person. I am hoping Elsa recovers and gets to enjoy many more years with you.

coastergirl · 14/12/2020 20:19

Good vets really are worth their weight in gold aren't they? Mine went way above and beyond a few weeks ago when my little cat was in. Sadly it wasn't a good outcome, but I'm somewhat comforted in knowing that no stone was left unturned and we did the best for him.

Elsa looks very much like my old dog, she's gorgeous. Hoping for the best for her and you.

MistyMinge2 · 14/12/2020 20:20

I'm so pleased to read that she pulled through the op. Fingers crossed she continues to recover well.

doodleygirl · 14/12/2020 22:35

Your vets sound amazing. I am so pleased Elsa came through the op and is still fighting her corner. Rooting for you and Elsa.

Icequeen01 · 15/12/2020 08:14

How is your darling girl this morning?

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 15/12/2020 11:52

Elsa is much better in herself. Didn't think I would be so relieved to cheer her when she had a poop! She is alert and eating well and started picking her toys up again which is good to see.

Our hairdresser came this morning to give us all a pre Christmas cut and she wasn't stressed out at all and even trotted over tail wagging and allowed her to give her a gentle fuss which is surprising. I think all the handling she has had over the last few days has mellowed her out.

The vet was pleased at her progress this morning and has said for such a small dog she has coped remarkably well with such a major surgery. The nurse who assisted during the operation said it was really bad and she has only seen bigger dogs survive after so much blood loss.

The vet thanked us for allowing him to operate and said the team all have their fingers crossed that her biopsy is benign which made me tear up.

Wow what a fab club Elsa has op! One well loved lucky girl.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 15/12/2020 12:47

A poop? Fabulous! When things are not right with your hound, there is a (strange) joy to be found when they manage a poop.

I’m so glad to hear that she is a little bit sparky again. She has been through an awful lot by the sounds of it and still she has a little wag.

I’m delighted to hear this update.

Flowers Mon Elsa Smile

And for vets and vet nurses everywhere Flowers

What an amazing thread. So pleased Elsa seems to be on the way to recovery, can’t be many times people are delighted to hear of a dog getting feisty and growls at the vets!
