Horrible dog accident. I feel awful.

Took ddog out this afternoon.
Took her frisbee so she could have a run around the fields.
She had an awful accident and I feel so so bad.
I threw the frisbee and she was so busy running and looking at it in the air that she ran face first into a concrete bollard.
I didn't even throw it towards the bollards, the wind took it.
She's knocked out a few front teeth, her teeth went right through her lips, somehow her gums are cut and mangled.
She's going for an emergency op to sort it all, remove any loose teeth and stitch her lips and gums, she's only 1 so just a baby.
I've never seen so much blood.
Randomly she didn't bat an eyelid. I think she was running on adrenaline and she's not moaned since.
She ran in the house and scarfed down her left over dog kibble before I could stop her 10 minutes after it happened.
I just feel horrendous.

She will be fine. It was a freak accident. No one at fault. Mouths heal super fast and any she won't miss any teeth that go. Don't beat yourself up.

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 16:02

I can't believe she'll have another 10+ years with all her front teeth missing.
I'm an awful awful dog owner.

Unless you are Aeolus (god of wind) then there was no way you could have foreseen or prevented this from happening

It must have been really awful for you to witness but she’s obviously over it already!
Just give her lots of cuddles.

GerardWay123 · 30/11/2020 16:08

You poor things, both of you. It was an accident and you will be in shock. DDog loves you, loads of cuddles is all she needs now and you're not an awful owner.

bearlyactive · 30/11/2020 16:10

There's nothing you could have done, I know it's easy for us to say but don't beat yourself up about it!

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 16:13

Operation isn't until tomorrow so she's home with me tonight. They've dosed her up on painkillers and she's very cuddly and looks sad.
I just wish I hadn't taken the bloody frisbee out with us.

Bless her. Completely not your fault and am sure she’ll be right as rain.

IrisJoy · 30/11/2020 16:18

These things happen. when I took our dog out on very first walk he had an accident and had to have a tow amputated. I have never felt so bad about anything in my life!
4 years on and the only hangover of it is that he adores going to the vet because he was so spoilt there as a cute little puppy.
I promise your dog will be fine, and the vet will have seen a lot worse. But totally understand how you are feeling.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 30/11/2020 16:26

Totally not your fault and not something you could have prevented. Dogs bounce back v v quickly.

A few years ago my dog scalped himself—no idea how, went out in the garden and came back with no flesh on the top of his head (maybe a 3 inch circle). It looked so shocking and I was utterly horrified but the dog somehow didn’t care?!? Vet had him sorted over a number of visits, genuinely dig since fine with not having any skin. I think I had a worse time than him!

krustykittens · 30/11/2020 16:38

Poor dog and poor you. It was an accident, OP, they happen. You didn't neglect your dog or put her in a dangerous situation, you threw a frisbee for her. That's all. She will cope fine without her front teeth. It's a nasty shock, so I hope you will both be feeling better soon. x

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 16:39

She's just demolished her dinner. They said to soak it in water to make it a bit mushier and she acted like she's never been fed.
Hoping that's a good sign. She's also carrying her teddy through the house in her mouth so it can't hurt that much.
The painkillers she's had are obviously helping.

Aw you poor thing and your poor poochy Sad please don't beat yourself up. When we got our Springer spaniel as a pup 3 years ago we used to laugh cos he loved chewing socks, always running round with one hanging out of his mouth. Well he only went and swallowed one of DH's thick work socks, we didn't know at the time and over next couple of days he went off his food. Took him to vets and he needed major surgery to remove the sock from his intestines!! He was only 6 months old and we were mortified/devastated, he could have died but thankfully he recovered. Felt so bad cos we had no idea he would swallow one, he is still obsessed with trying to eat socks now so hasn't learned his lesson!! At one point we considered becoming a sock-free household Grin it's extremely hard to make sure none are left lying around (especially with young kids!) The reason you feel guilty is because you adore your doggy, they are lucky to have you.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/11/2020 17:27

These things happen - something very similar happened to a friend of mine - her dog lost/broke a couple of teeth to a lump of old concrete in the middle of a grassy field.

Our old dog ran straight into a broken branch sticking out from a fallen tree. Fortunately it did nothing worse than make her holler, wind her, and give her a big scratch, but it was an awful moment.

Short of wrapping them in cotton wool, they will get hurt at times - cut pads, barbed wire scratches, snagged ears. It's much better that they can be outside having exercise and fun than always indoors or on a lead.

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 17:49

I feel worse because she's so clumsy.
We are always at the vets with torn paw pads or grass seeds in her paws, she tore her carpal pads last month running around like a lunatic, plus cut herself on barbed wire on a fence 6 months ago when she ran into it.
She's a very outdoors energetic dog, she runs first and thinks second.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/11/2020 18:17

All I’m getting from this is that she’s very much loved and gets to spend loads of time outdoors running around like a lunatic. Perfect life for a dog!

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 18:23

She does. We live near forests, fields, woods and a beach so she has the life of Riley! She's just very accident prone. Today was by far the worst tho.
Fingers crossed it will all be over and we can be snuggling tomorrow night with a fixed face.

As a teen I threw a stick for ddog. Went down her throat and poked out her neck. Very very gruesome..
She lived til nearly 21.
No ill effects. She forgave me!!
Your dpuppy will too op.

JacobReesMogadishu · 30/11/2020 18:28

It sounds like she’s having a great, active life. I’m sure she’ll manage without a few teeth.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/11/2020 18:30

My dog has no front teeth, he had to have them all out and he's completely fine. You honestly wouldn't know. So don't worry about the long-term effects.

Someonesayroadtrip · 30/11/2020 18:39

Sounds like she has a lovely active life! Poor thing though.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 30/11/2020 18:54

My Shih Tzu Maggie believed everything on the floor was food or a toy. We had a death in the family and lots of visitors in and out. Someone dropped a box of diabetic test needles under the sofa. Maggie found them. And ate them all. She was literally clinking as she walked around the house. Rushed her to the vet and they x-rayed and operated. She had 49 test needles, a screw and an earring in her stomach! Maggie lived to be sixteen years old and never stopped eating non-food items. (No one ever admitted losing the box of needles either!Angry)

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 19:03

These dog accident stories are making me feel a bit better, not that I wish a dog accident on anyone.
I'm nervous for her for tomorrow. Fingers crossed she'll be ok.

OP posts:
Fairybatman · 30/11/2020 19:13

Some dogs are just --stupid
--clumsy. When DDog was about 3 I was at the top of a cliff in the Lakes and DH was at the bottom. I called her and she ran up. DH called her and she bloody jumped over the edge of the cliff and fell 20+ feet.

Carried her miles back to the car got the emergency vets and not a thing wrong with her, although in later years she suffered with bad arthritis in the wrists where she had landed.

BiteyShark · 30/11/2020 19:37

Don't feel bad OP, these things happen more often than you realise. My dog has no self preservation and is always in the vets with minor and some major accidents.

dogdilemmas · 30/11/2020 19:40

I just hate that she's in pain and it's all my fault.
She's my little mate when the kids are at school. Hate the thought that I hurt her.
I won't be taking the frisbee out ever again.
