Horrible dog accident. I feel awful.

Took ddog out this afternoon.
Took her frisbee so she could have a run around the fields.
She had an awful accident and I feel so so bad.
I threw the frisbee and she was so busy running and looking at it in the air that she ran face first into a concrete bollard.
I didn't even throw it towards the bollards, the wind took it.
She's knocked out a few front teeth, her teeth went right through her lips, somehow her gums are cut and mangled.
She's going for an emergency op to sort it all, remove any loose teeth and stitch her lips and gums, she's only 1 so just a baby.
I've never seen so much blood.
Randomly she didn't bat an eyelid. I think she was running on adrenaline and she's not moaned since.
She ran in the house and scarfed down her left over dog kibble before I could stop her 10 minutes after it happened.
I just feel horrendous.

Aw it couldn’t be helped, these things happen, she sounds like she’s very loved and has been well looked after by the vet. Mouth injuries heal really quickly (in dogs and humans alike) as well so she will be 100% fine very soon!

Noddyandbiggerears · 30/11/2020 19:45

It’s not your fault at all OP and don’t deny her her beloved frisbee. Wishing you both well Flowers

Veterinari · 30/11/2020 19:47

Is she a retriever OP?

I'm reasonably sure some of them are born without a functioning nervous system Grin Lovely dogs but totally oblivious to danger, pain etc.

It was an accident, she'll be fine. Don't let it put you off the frisbee - she enjoys it.

We had a dog like this. The vet said "some dogs see the destination not the route" and it made total sense.

I feel you pain. When our old collie pup was about 6 months I had her on the tractor with me, pulled up into the yard and opened the door. Ddog was great at waiting until I lifted her down from the cab but on this occasion a cat shot out from the barn straight under the tractor. Ddog couldn't help herself and went out the door after it, unfortunately she caught her front leg in the slats of the step and tore all her ligaments on the way down - Vet wanted to amputate due to the amount of damage but agreed to wait and see if they would heal.

We had 6 months of very restricted exercise which is no joke with a collie pup! She went on to be the best working dog we have ever had the privilege to own and died when she was 13. We always joked that when she was moving cattle or sheep or if something needed chasing she used 4wd but she was also very clever at pretending to be lame to get attention! 😂

The one thing I do remember is our Vet telling us that dogs live in the here and now and that they just get on and adapt to life changing situations without any regrets.

What a brilliant way to live!!

Don’t beat yourself up, sounds like she’s not in too much pain if she’s eating & carrying her teddy.
They’re wonderful at getting into scrapes. One of mine jumped through a glass front door trying his best to get to his friend the postman who used to give him a biscuit. Shoved him in the kitchen while I phoned the vet & opening the door to get him the cream kitchen had been redecorated bright red, never seen so much blood. He was fine after.
Another was an “eater”, socks, a credit card, the hall wall. Once she ate a floor cloth. Hadn’t realised till the day after when she was walking round with about nine inches of it trailing out of her bum. Didn’t dare pull it to help it out so she wandered round mopping all the floor for the next two days till it all passed out.

Wow! Sounds like I'm not the only one with a klutz of a dog.
Please tell me they get more careful as they grow older!

One of our dogs lost a leg before she’d even been for her first walk! She was a teeny puppy, DH carried her outside to go for a wee, she got excited and jumped from his arms onto the concrete path. Her leg was broken so badly it was amputated. She survived many years with 3 legs (and she wasn’t the only 3 legged dog we’ve had!), and I promise you your dog will survive happily with no front teeth. The important thing is, she’ll live those 10+ years. Teeth or no teeth, she’s very clearly loved ❤️

was joining in to say that one of my dogs always behaved like a twat when we went walking in woods, he once ran into a branch sticking out of the ground and tore his chest open to the bone, I didn't realise till the end of the walk as he was still running around like a twat, numerous stitches later and a large vets bill and he was absolutely fine. Oh, he is also a fully trained working gundog!

Someonesayroadtrip · 02/12/2020 00:09

How your dog today?

Someonesayroadtrip · 02/12/2020 00:09

*is

dogdilemmas · 02/12/2020 06:11

Yeah she's ok.
Thanks for asking.
Her front teeth didn't just get knocked out, they snapped off, so they had to do lots of cutting and drilling to get the roots.
Plus stitched her lips and gums back up.
She's being a trooper though!

Our 10 yo ddog had 10 teeth out a year ago. Snapped one on some raw pumpkin last Halloween!! She still eats pizza crusts like a pro!! Gummy smile though!!

Someonesayroadtrip · 02/12/2020 09:48

Awww bless. Glad she is ok though.

Beamur · 02/12/2020 09:58

Poor pup. Really not your fault though.
My previous dog was definitely all about the destination and not the route! Chased a ball with such concentration she ran into a wall. Loud bang, dog shook her head and carried on. She lost a toenail on one walk, stood on glass on another, jumped off a path and didn't notice the drop alongside, we found various healed wounds on her. None the worse for her scrapes. Just very enthusiastic when outside!
